Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World

A person born centuries ago, if then told that technology would soon take over
everything – shopping, dating, libraries, getting in touch with your loved ones, and even
becoming as a currency – that person would most likely see it as absurd. Yet, everything
happened. Science fiction became the reality and it is rapidly evolving. The documentary
Lo and Behold captivates the development of the internet commencing from its history,
the present times, and the unpredictable possibilities that may occur both in the near and
distant future.

Technological innovation is accelerating precipitously. Going through the history

of the internet, an ordinary person can already infer that the digital systems are complex
on its own. In line with those facts, the question that we now need to ask ourselves is
whether or not the present laws are adequate to regulate the impeding domination of
technology when complex digital systems aside, it is already difficult to secure and
regulate the ordinary physical spaces. In this modern digital age, numerous issues are
escalating as to the privacy security, intellectual property, and censorship, among others.

The government and the lawmakers have to find a way to interpret and apply the
values of the rule of law to the corporations and organizations that offer our present
digital public spaces – the social media platforms, the content hosts, the search engines
– in order for us to have a sense in the growing concerns in the exercise of the power of
technology. The advancement of technology should be directly proportional to the
development of the laws and regulation; otherwise, the inventions and discoveries of the
humans themselves may be the possible cause for the expiration to the human populace.
