ABSTRACT

Background: Carbon tetrachloride (CC14) is the hepatotoxic substance most often

used in studies relating to hepatotoxicity. CCl4 can cause damage to the liver caused
by free radicals. CC14 requires activation of metabolism mainly by the cytochrome
P450 enzyme in the liver. This activation will convert CC14 into a more toxic
metabolite, which can cause liver damage in experimental animals and humans.
Curcuma longa L. has antioxidant, anti-tumor, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory,
wound healing, and gastroprotective activity. Previous research also showed that
Curcuma longa L. water extract had hepatoprotective activity on the toxicity of carbon
tetrachloride.

Method: In this study carried out experimentally. The data to be used in this study are
quantitative data.

Results: in the CCl4 group, the presence of necrosis cells was characterized by the
presence of nuclei cells, this group looked more than the other groups, this was due to
the lack of protection from the turmeric extract.

Conclusion: Turmeric can be used as a hepatoprotector in protecting liver cells. In

Islamic religion to experiment with using experimental animals, it is permitted for the
benefit of humanity
