Stalking case continues against Cr Dudzik

A man who, according to police prosecution “referred to himself as Jesus

Christ”, appeared before Magistrate Ron Saines in the Bacchus Marsh
Magistrates’ court on Friday 8 March.
Bacchus Marsh Love Close resident, 51-year-old Godwin Aquilina,
attended court in hopes to obtain a sentence indication, but the accused’s
lawyer said she was “unable to persuade him” [in his plea of guilty or not
guilty].
The court heard after Aquilina erected a large structure of a plastic doll
on a gantry in his backyard, members of Moorabool Shire council, along
with police, attend the scene to remove said structure on May 31 of last
year.
It was alleged by the prosecution, Senior Constable Lisa Schoemaker,
the accused “became aggressive and verbally abusive” towards council
members and police.
“I’m getting raped financially, raped emotionally,” the accused allegedly
said. “It is my creation and it showed the level of corruption in the council.”
Aquilina’s offending occurred between the end of 2017 through to late
last year, and involved charges of stalking a Moorabool Shire Councillor,
Tonia Dudzik.
On November 11 of 2017, it was alleged Aquilina called the victim and
told her that he was going to harm her and to not tell anyone about the
threats.
Senior Constable Schoemaker went on to tell the court Aquilina allegedly
told Cr Dudzik that she was “number 19 on his list”.
On May 5 Aquilina attended a fundraiser that Cr Dudzik was working at.
The prosecutor said Dudzik “felt a sharp jab in her back”, and after seeing
the accused at said event “she felt scared”.
On June 27, the accused allegedly covered a cubby house, that Cr Dudzik
had given to Aquilina for his children when the two were on good terms
some years ago, with black writing.
The graffiti on said cubby house read “frack me you bully”, which the
prosecutor said “[Dudzik] felt threatened” by.
Mr Aquilina’s case was adjourned for a full day contested hearing on

A 22-year-old university student will contest for the seat of
Ballarat in the upcoming Federal election.
Timothy Vo, who is involved with the Ballan Football
Netball Club, was endorsed by the Liberal Party for the seat
of Ballarat last week.
The seat has been held by Shadow Minister for Health and
Medicare Catherine King since November 2001.
Mr Vo is completing a Bachelor of Education at Federation
University and said in a statement that he is “humbled and
honoured to represent the Liberal Party at the next Federal
election.”

seniors
Senior Groups in Moorabool Shire are being encouraged
to apply for a new grant initiative to help support older
Victorians with their involvement in the community,
reducing the risk of social isolation and loneliness.
Labor Member for Melton, Steve McGhie, is encouraging
local community groups to apply for funding as part of the
Victorian Government’s Senior Participation Grants.
Mr McGhie said innovation grants of up to $75,000 are
available for new community programs that give seniors an
opportunity to mix with others.
“An older person’s ability to live independently depends on
many factors, including their health and wellbeing, family
and community support and the environment they live in,”
Mr McGhie said.
“We want to work together to prevent loneliness and social
isolation in older people living in Moorabool Shire. These
grants will support projects that keep seniors healthy, well
and connected in their community,” he said.
One in 10 senior Victorians experiences social isolation
and loneliness. Life events such as the loss of a partner,
retirement, relocation or illness can also impact on an older
person’s wellbeing.
The State Government’s $700,000 Senior Participation Grant
Program will focus on projects that help prevent loneliness
in older people, by building on community partnerships.
Grants are open to local government, community-based
agencies, multicultural and ethno-specific organisations,
Aboriginal organisations, LGBTIQ services, local clubs and
community groups.

workshop with local author Allyse Near
at Bacchus Marsh Primary School last
week, in preparation for the Moorabool
Young Writers Awards.
The students discovered the magic
behind the opening lines of successful
children’s books – from ‘Alice in
Wonderland’ to ‘Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone’ – and practised
writing a ‘sizzling starter’ for the
opening of their own stories.
Ms Near, who will return as this year’s
judge for the awards, said that there
were “so many fantastic entries last
year,” and is on the eye for stories that
will “grab my attention and force me to
keep reading.”

bit against the grain and against the

Annoying son leads
to scuffle with father

Annoying your dad is one thing, but a
Bacchus Marsh man pushed his father to the
limit before police had to attend the scene
after a scuffle went south.
Matthew Hehir, a 38-year-old foreman,
appeared before Magistrate Ron Saines in
the Bacchus Marsh court on Friday 8 March
with a plea of guilty to charges involving his
70-year-old father.
It was alleged by the prosecution, Senior
Constable Lisa Schoemaker, the accused
attended his father’s house on the night of 18
August 2018 to watch the football and have a
few drinks with his dad.
“The accused was carrying on and putting
his finger and fist in his dad’s face for about
two hours,” Schoemaker told the court.

She said this annoyance led to a scuffle
between both Hehir and the victim, which
resulted in the accused’s brother contacting
police.
When interviewed by police, it was alleged
by the prosecution that Hehir made full
admissions and said that he “didn’t have
a full recollection, but [his dad’s] story is
plausible”.
Magistrate Saines said to Hehir, “you
present a serious problem to yourself.”
“With a history of family and criminal
violence dating back to 1998,” he said.
“The message you need to understand is
that unless you address the drug and alcohol
abuse, you will always be a candidate for
imprisonment.”
Hehir was convicted and fined $1000,
having to pay an additional $82.40 in court
costs.

A local author is in the running for one of the most prestigious
literary awards in Australia.
Wayne Marshall, of Bacchus Marsh, has been shortlisted in the

Mr Marshall said it was an “incredible” feeling to be shortlisted
among some of Australia’s most prominent authors, which has

A local musician will bring her talents back to the

community next month, performing live in concert for an
important cause.
Melbourne Symphony Orchestra cellist and Ballan resident
Miranda Brockman will perform a repertoire of cello and
piano pieces with American pianist Donna Coleman, Head

nominations of Piano Studies at the Victorian College of the Arts for

Moorabool locals, who promote the rights and participation
of people living with a disability, have the opportunity to
be recognised for their service through this year’s Victorian
Disability Awards.
Labor Member for Melton Steve McGhie encouraged locals
from the Moorabool Shire to apply for the awards, which
celebrate hardworking individuals and groups who help
build a fairer and more inclusive Victoria.
Mr McGhie said there were countless people around
Moorabool Shire who work every day towards improving
the lives of people with a disability.
“The Victorian Disability Awards honour locals in
Moorabool Shire who provide outstanding support,
leadership, advocacy, service and education to ensure
Victorians with disability can contribute to our society,” Mr
McGhie said.
Nominations are open to individuals and groups – including
people with a disability, family members, volunteers and
people working in the sector – in seven categories:
* Emerging leader award
* Excellence in creating inclusive communities
* Excellence in employment outcomes
* Excellence in promoting health, housing and wellbeing
* Excellence in promoting rights, fairness and safety
* Volunteer award
* Lifetime achievement honour roll.
Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers, Luke Donnellan
will also select the winner of the Minister’s Award for
Outstanding Leadership.
Nominations are open until Sunday14 April and can be
made at www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/disabilityawards.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in
August.

Although the pair had known of each other for years, they
never crossed paths, but decided to form a duo in homage to
a teacher both had known whilst studying at the University
of Melbourne.
“We got talking and decided to form a little duo as a homage
to him,” said Ms Brockman.
The concert will feature a variety of pieces including
Sonatas by the iconic J.S. Bach, together with some rarely-
heard, romantic compositions by Rachmaninoff and Pärt, as
well as two female composers, Chaminade and Le Beau.
“There’s a lovely mix of different styles, from romance, to
what some might call ‘swoon’ music, contemplative, peace,
some modern and rhythmic music. It’s a nice palate,” she
said.
Although Ms Brockman’s time with the MSO means she’s
no stranger to big stages, including the Plenary at Melbourne
Convention Centre and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, there’s
always something about performing back home.
“I love playing in my own community. I’ve done about 12 or
so performances in local halls and it’s a natural fit,” she said.
All proceeds from the recital will go toward the Motor
Neurone Disease Association of Victoria, as Ms Brockman
has a close personal connection to the disease, “and wanted
to give back in some way”.
“The Motor Neurone Disease Association of Victoria is a
magnificent organisation, particularly as MND is a rapid
disease…it can be very expensive, and [they provide services
such as] wheelchairs free of charge for Victorians with or
have been touched by the disease,” she said.
Sonata Classics will be held on Sunday, April 7 at the Ballan

qualified for finals. 
Club Vice President Jarrod Prosser said the club is extremely
appreciative of their juniors, “the application and growth
they’ve shown this season.”
“To have so many teams play finals, for a developing club
like ours, is a fantastic achievement. For the seniors, we’re
happy to still be playing,” he said.
“But we’re going all out for the title. Ultimately though, it’s
our juniors that we’re most proud of.”
In addition to the four teams qualified, two other junior
teams barely missed finals qualification. 
Semi-finals take place in Ballarat this Saturday, with the
Grand Finals taking place Saturday week.

Darley Cricket Club’s season is
officially over after the second and
fourth grades and Under 15s and 17s
were all eliminated last weekend.
The Lions Under 10s ensured the
club wouldn’t miss out on silverware
completely, winning their Grand
Final on first innings.
Unfortunately for the senior sides there was disappointment
and heartbreak.
The Lions Second XI had Dunnstown reeling at 9/155 chasing
193 for victory. A stoic tenth wicket partnership would deny
Darley their opportunity to progress in the tournament with
Dunnstown successfully seeing out the run chase in a real,
on the edge of your seat, thriller.
Darley allrounder Mitch Ward’s patient 50 with the bat and
three wickets with the ball wasn’t enough to get the Lions
over the line.
The Lions One-day B-Grade modest total of 9/169 looked
70-80 runs shy as East Ballarat made light work of their run

The Centre was represented by 26 athletes at the State Track & Field Championship held at
Casey Fields over the weekend. Bacchus
Marsh claimed 4 Gold, 2 Silver and 2
Bronze medals for the Championships.
Alex Lloyd was our first medallist on
Day 1 of competition, winning his third
consecutive High Jump State Bronze
medal with a jump of 1.35 metres in
the Under 11 event. Nelson Banigo had a close battle in the
Under 10 70 metre final being narrowly pipped on the finish
line to win the Silver medal. Matai Haunga dominated the
Under 12 Discus competition to win Gold, with a throw of
13.57 metres. Nelson Banigo returned to the track, this time
in the 200 metres. After recording a convincing victory in
his heat, Nelson backed up to run a sensational final and win
the Gold medal. Luatangi Haunga.
Day 2 of competition saw another successful day for the Photos - submitted
Centre. Nelson Banigo won his second Silver medal for the
weekend. Running a hotly contested Under 10 60m Hurdles final which saw the top six
runners separated by less than 0.8 of a second. In the Under 12 Discus competition, Matai
Haunga once again dominated the field to claim his second State title, blitzing the field by
over 3 metres with a winning performance of 42.75 metres. Meanwhile younger brother
Luatangi stood upon the podium after finishing third in the Under 11 Shot Put competition
with a throw of 10.62 metres. Nelson Banigo once again was back on the track, this time in
his favourite event the 100 metres. After two false starts, the race was underway and Nelson
flew down the straight to cross the line in first place and claim his fourth State medal and yet
another State Championship.
The following athletes recorded top 8 performances – Nicholas Ide, Evie Ducas, Emma
Stewart, Jonas Cukavac, Danielle Ide, Bridie Shanahan, Ryan Lister, Oliver Cukavac, Kayla
Downes, Solomon Miesen and Eliza Schembri.
Whilst some athletes competed in their first State Championships, some competed in their
last.
