I am researching the history, development, legislation, laws, and the push for better gun

control in the US. I am of course trying to do so by incorporating different viewpoints, gun

legislation compared from other countries to the US, and today's congressional laws and

legislation about guns. I also want to figure out if there are ways to lower gun violence with

methods from academic articles and such. Seemingly enough, there are plenty of sources in

creating such paper for myself. I just want to argue and push for a middle ground somehow in

the issue of gun control in the US.

This article, created by Abigail Abrams and Melissa Chan, highlights reports of the gun

issue in the US; it mentions the different opinions about the firearms in rural and urban lands,

and that it also presents comments from individuals about gun ownership and legislation. It is a

news article from Time magazine.

I think that the purpose of this article was to inform whoever was to read it about the

views about the gun control debate in the US amongst different individuals. Luckily, the
individuals were people who were apart of an incident that relates with a gun. I think they used

those individuals in the article because they have a purpose behind how they stand in the debate.

I think this article is very reliable in the information it presents because at the beginning

of the article it explains statistics and the just information about the debate. Then, it leads to a

section where they provide 25 people’s views and experience that shaped them. I think that

section is way important to research and understand.

I look forward to using this article because it is an academic article from Sinclair, and I

look forward to incorporating some of the ideas said in this article and the views of the people

Time magazine used into my paper. I think that this will help me show different viewpoints that

are for or against gun control. Their viewpoints are highly valuable to me into using it for my

research paper.

Fleming, Anthony, et al. “Debating Gun Control in Canada and the United States: Divergent

Policy Frames and Political Cultures.” World Affairs, vol. 181, no. 4, Dec. 2018, pp. 348–

371. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1177/0043820018812609. Accessed 17 Mar 2019.

This article, created by Anthony Fleming and more, focuses how in the US, there is a

weakness behind the mobilizing of the public to contribute towards anti-gun lobbying. Moreover,

it explains the coalition for gun control that emerged in Canada for the creation of the Firearms

Act 1995. They further explain their research from media coverages, presidential issues, party

platforms, and more.

I think the purpose of this article was to show that the US should consider taking account

in having a better mobilization of the public to partake in political issues of gun control in the

US. It that it compares how Canada has done so, but the US has not done so.
Anthony Fleming is an assistant professor at the University of West Georgia, Dylan S.

McLean is an instructor in the Department of Political Science at the University of West

Georgia, and Raymond Tatalovich is a Professor Emeritus of political science at Loyola

University, Chicago. They are seemingly credible because of the fact that they are professors at a

University and are related to knowing about political science which is in relation to the type of

article and research paper they have created.

I think I will be using this article to use the information about the importance of political

culture in fostering for collective action, such as mobilizing the public to take action into pushing

for better legislation. I think the information given in this article will truly help me better

understand more, but also to better help explain better politics equals better public policies to be

put in place. Of course, all in correlation to better gun control.

Gregory, Sean, et al. “What We Can Do to Stop It.” Time, vol. 191, no. 12, Apr. 2018, pp. 32–

This article, created by Sean Gregory and more, offers six different suggestions for how

the US can reduce gun violence. It offers information such as age restrictions, licensing,

technology-related safety measures, getting doctors involved, and funding for research.

The purpose of the article was to inform the audience to inform the different viewpoint

into the issue of gun control. I also think that the author was trying to inform suggestions of

reducing gun violence; to enlighten the audience another viewpoint.

The authors show some adequate information that I can use in my essay. I also think that

it is reliable since it is from an academic journal. There doesn’t seem to be other resources in this

document or article.

This article seems to show a different viewpoint of the issue of gun control, it stated that

the US public should think of this as not just a political issue, but also mental health issue as

well. I think this may be a different off-topic situation, but I think the suggestions they provide

can be incorporated into my essay. And the way they explain it as somehow reducing violence

will be noted in my research.

“Gun Control Overview.” Congressional Digest, vol. 92, no. 3, Mar. 2013, pp. 3–7. EBSCOhost,

This article doesn’t really have an author behind who wrote it. It looks to be a written

document from a website online. Generally, this article is about gun use and gun control in the

US, as of 2013.

It seems that the main purpose of this article was to provide information and question the

debate about gun control and its usage in the US and that it overall it seems to be for academic

purposes. The audience can be for anyone, but I think it targets those looking for information

about the debate on gun control. This will definitely help me or my research paper. Fortunately,

the article provides a plentiful amount of statistics of gun ownership and any crimes, fatalities,

usage related to guns.

I think that this source may not be reliable to use about recent debate about gun control,

but I think that it’s creation from the past is what may help me explain the development of this
debate. I can also see that because it was created in 2013, it may be brought upon because of

events that relate to guns in that time.

Luckily, this article will help me outline some of the US federal gun legislation and laws

that were created. I would probably use the information in this article to help me compare the

development of the debate on gun control and legislation from then to now. I think that will help

better understand everything.

Lewis, J.Scott. “The Relationship between Gun Control Strictness and Mass Murder in

the United States: A National Study 2009-2015.” International Social Science Review,

vol. 94, no. 2, May 2018, pp. 1–23. EBSCOhost,

sinclair.ohionet.org:80/login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&d

b=a9h&AN=131932327&site=ehost-live. Accessed 17 Mar 2019.

The article, created by Scott J. Lewis, focuses on national studies in the US from 2009-

2015 and that it explains the relationship between stricter gun control and mass murders and

shootings in the US. It used plenty of media that are related to gun shootings and such. Most of

the main ideas are supported by statistics and actually source noted at the end of the article.

The author’s purpose is specifically noted in the concluding paragraph. The author

basically does not want to show an bias towards one side of the debate. The author's purpose was

to bring awareness to “other social scientists, criminal justice experts, and policy makers”, so

they can create better regulations and legislation about guns in the US.

The author was said to be a social scientist. He provides very well adequate information

in the article and he backs it all up by providing a sources page at the end of the article. It is all

seeming to be reliable to me because it is an academic article.

I would like to use this article for the sole purpose of using the information in the article.

Also, I would like to use this article to further understand the situation because it does focus on

national studies in the US. This will surely help me develop a research paper. Hopefully, I can

incorporate this article and its information into my paper because it has plenty of adequate

information at hand to use.

“U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons.” Council on Foreign Relations, Council on

The gun control debate has been on and off over the years, stirred by mass shootings of in

civilian settings said by Jonathan Masters in a news article; seemingly academic in this source.

The Sandy Hook incident in 2012 prompted the discussion of gun legislation, yet no legislation

was ever passed because of it. It was said in this article that because of the 2017 big shootings in

the United States that occurred, it had brought up the issue of guns once again, but in this

particular article, it compares gun legislation of the United States to other major countries around

the world.

Masters audience seems to be towards audiences who seek information about gun

legislation. I see it as a source that compares gun legislation of the US to other countries.

Because it was written in the year 2017, the major mass shootings in Las Vegas and at the church

near San Antonio caused this article to be made because that was the said to be the major

purpose behind why this article was written.

Masters is a deputy managing editor that partakes in writing in articles on the CFR

organization website. Masters provide a plethora of adequate information because he has

resources that he refers to from where he researched the information he talked about in the

article.

I foresee myself using this article to refer to it for information about differences of gun

legislation in other countries compared to the United States. This source will help me answer my

research question because it will help me explain better how gun legislation in other countries

works compared to the US. In other words, it will help me explain that their stricter gun

legislation seems to lower shootings because of the stricter gun legislation.

Winkler, Adam. “The Secret History of Guns.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 6

Oct. 2017, www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/09/the-secret-history-of-

guns/308608/. Accessed 17 Mar 2019.

This article, created by Adam Winkler, mainly focuses on the history behind guns and

how laws, regulations, and legislation has developed throughout the years of US gun ownership.

It includes how the Black Panthers made their pro-gun movement famous for black Americans,

and then towards Reagan’s gun control ideas, and other parts of history.

The author’s purpose in writing this was to inform of the history behind guns and in the

US and how it has become from back then to 2011. I think it came about to be created because it

was to inform of the general public about the history of guns and then relating it to now.

Adam Winkler is a professor at the UCLA School of law. I know he is credible because

he is a professor at the UCLA School of Law, so he has some credibility about laws and such
which is what the article is about. Winkler seems to have provided adequate information

throughout the article.

I think I will use this article to incorporate more about the history of the development of

gun movements and gun legislation from history into my paper. I think it will benefit me in

giving more information into my research. I also think that this will help me compare the past to

recent years as of now about gun control and such.
