Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the strategies and challenges encountered by persons with

disability in parental responsibility. This includes the review of literature, background of

the study, statement of the problem, conceptual framework and conceptual paradigm, scope

and delimitations, significance of the study and definition of terms.

Background of the Study

No job is too easy, especially for a parent. A parent must do everything to give a

child’s needs. Caring and raising a child is probably the most difficult job to do. One must

give her/his all so that the child may grow on the right path. But what if the parent’s leg

loses its ability? Or lacks an arm? What if the parent is deaf or blind or mute, but still gives

the child’s needs?

These were the questions that inspired us to study about the parental

responsibilities of person with disabilities. This study seeks to explore the strategies the

difficulties encountered in parenting, at the same time, having disabilities.

Prilleltensky (2004) considered the relationship between children and their

physically disabled mothers and found that it was important to them not to burden their

children with worry or with providing support. She then argues that it is not the impairment

itself which affects the relationship between mother and child, but the context within which

it is embedded, for example, if there is lack of support to enable the mother to be a hands-

on parent. Prilleltensky expresses concern that there may be an automatic assumption made

3
that disabled parenting means an undue burden on the child, but which is really a result of

lack of funding and outside support.

Grue and Laerum (2002) found that the mothers with disabilities participating in

their research faced a dilemma in that they feared that asking their children to do household

chores or similar tasks could be construed as taking advantage of their willingness to help,

whereas taking responsibility for certain tasks in the home, at nursery or school is generally

seen as a valuable step in the process of socialization of a child. In relation to how

children view parents with disabilities, the research by Conley-Jung and Olkin (2001)

points to an Israeli study, which found that factors affecting a child’s view of their parents

were the same, whether their parents had a visual impairment or not.

The three literatures states that the support of parents in their child’s life, in an

important role to be given to them. Despite their disability, they can fulfill their parental

responsibility. In this research, the researchers will seek for their perspective in fulfilling

parental responsibility even with disability.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to understand the parental strategies of persons with disability in

rearing their children.

It seeks to find the answer of the following:

1. What are the parental strategies of persons with disability in rearing their children?

2. What are the challenges regarding the parental responsibility?

3. What are their ways of handling the challenges encounter on parental responsibility?

4. What intervention can be provided to the parents who are persons with disabilities

4
Conceptual Framework
This study deals with the everyday life experiences of parents that have

disability. The study deals with how they handled challenges. This will be made possible

through the following steps.

6
Us, researchers want to know the strategies in parental guidance of a person with

disability in rearing their children to truly understand the ways how they cope up in parental

responsibility.

After identifying the strategies, we want to know the challenges they

encountered regarding to parental responsibility. In this way, the study will be able to know

the obstacles that they overcome in their daily life.

The research study also seeks to know their ways of handling the challenges

encounter on parental responsibility. In this way we can know more about their struggles

and share to others.

Finally, we, the researchers want to know what intervention can be provided

to the parents who are persons with disabilities which answers and completes the aims of

the research study.

Scope and Delimitation

In general, the focus of this study is directed towards understanding the struggles

encountered and strategies to handle challenges in parental responsibility of a person with

disability. We researchers will determine if a disability is not a limiting factor in parental

responsibility.

It also focuses on the strategies and challenges of persons with disability in rearing

their children. An in-depth interview will be conducted during the data gathering.

The focus of this study is to profile and document the everyday life and struggles

encountered by parents who has disability. The parent with disability’s child should be

entering school or working

7
This study is delimited to parents who are not disabled. This study only focuses

with parent’s with different disability in Ligao area. This study will be starting on February

and will end on April 2019.

Significance of the study

The findings of the study will be beneficial to the following group:

Parents. The data gathered in the study will serve as an inspiration for the parents

who are having difficulty in fulfilling the child’s needs.

Parents with disability. The study will help parents with disability to do their

parental responsibility despite of their disabilities.

Person with disability. This study will motivate disabled person in to do more

than they are expected to do.

Government. By this study, the government will be informed of the struggle of a

parent with disability which help them understand the everyday life of a parent with

disability and give intervention.

Community. This study may help the community to truly understand the life of a

person with disability parent and make a move.

Researchers. The researchers have developed their writing, analysis,

interpretation, understanding and social interaction skills needed to make a good

research.

Future Researchers. Future researchers may use the findings of the study on

their own future studies as well to examine the accuracy of the data gathered and provide

further recommendations.

8
Definition of terms
In order to have an easy and better understanding for the readers, the researchers

define the following terminologies according to how it is used in this research.

Chapter 2
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the researcher’s enclosed research design, source of data,

sampling procedure, and key informant. This outlines the ways in which the research was

conducted, the data were gathered, and also identifies the methods used in this study.

Research design
This qualitative research study will utilize case study design. According to Saul

McLeod case study is an in-depth investigation of a single person, group event or

community. Typically, data are gathered from a variety of sources and by using several

methods.

We chose this design because our study will just have a respondent that we will

observe, question, and interview. We chose this design because this kind of design tackles

something unusual about the respondents.

Case study will prove things or answer the questions provided of the paradigm of

this study by conducting it to our only respondent which suites the qualifications of our

research. By interviewing the key informant, we, researchers, have to gather information

about this person and will focus on some important aspects only which in line with the

research problem. We will also focus on the challenges, way of handling the challenges

and parental strategies of our respondent.

Sources of data

This research will employ on primary source of data which will be based on the

respondent’s experiences, interview and our observation in knowing their strategies,

challenges and their ways on handling it.

11
Primary source of data comes in firsthand information gathered. In this study, data

will come from the respondent’s experience of cutting, or trying to commit suicide in

different ways, by interviewing and observations regarding his/her life experiences.

Key informant

This research utilizes the case study research design and convenience sampling

procedure to gather data that will be used in the study, given only one respondent, we

researchers uses friendship pyramiding by studying on a parent who is, at the same time,

a father of our friend, who has disability.

Mr. J is a PWD parent where he has poliomyelitis, he lives in Guilid Ligao City,

with the age of forty (40) born on October 7, 1979. We chose Mr. J as a respondent aside

from he’s a PWD parent, he can answer the questions we need to ask. He raised his

children with his wife working overseas. And he only lives near by the neighborhood of

one of the researchers, and he is also a parent of our friend.

Sampling Procedures

This study will use a friendship pyramiding type of Convenience sampling, under

a non-probability sampling. The respondent is a parent of our friend or an acquaintance.

We picked a respondent who can be qualified as key informant by looking at their profiles

and background. Based on the main topic of this study, we need a respondent who is a

parent, and has a disability.

Choosing the perfect respondent for this research will be giving us the kind of data

needed as well as the ample saturation of data. Case study is used as a research design, and

therefore, we need one respondent to be chosen as a key informant for this study.

12
Data Collection Procedure

Our, researcher’s key informant is the father of our friend Jerome Tanguin. Who

has disability.

Friendship pyramiding, which is under convenience sampling is used by us,

researchers, because the respondent is the father of our friend.

By understanding our research problem, we researchers chose the most convenient

respondent to be interviewed, given their location, time availability, status, and willingness

to be a part of this study. We plan to interview the key informant regarding his/her life

experiences/struggles in connection with disability.

Instrumentation

We, researchers, will use the following instruments:

Interview Guide. The interview guide is a list of questions that can be asked from the key

informant to gather the ample data saturation required in this study. Open ended questions

will be used. Under this format, we prepared an interview guide to allow the natural flow

of the conversation, which questions could be asked randomly. Meanwhile, there is always

an opportunity for us researchers to ask ‘off-script’ to attain much more detailed responses..

Data Analysis
In this study, we researchers use content and discourse analysis method to

compile, analyze, and process raw data, from the key informant, during the interview

process.

Content analysis is used to analyze the responses of the key informant, such as the

sharing of experiences to us researchers. Discourse analysis is for analyzing how our

13
respondent reacts with the questions we give. Given their unique functions, when combined

as one, is believed to be the best analysis method to be utilized for this study.
