SILvalve-3 --- The Safest ESD Valve

SafePlex “O” PORT DESIGN

SafePlex “O” Port design is the only ESD valve that does not have a valve seat. That’s
important! The common problem with knife and cage valves is that the valve seat
gathers solids during normal operation. This could prevent valve closure during
shutdown demands. Typically, 30 to 35% of ESD valve failures are due to solids
gathering on the valve seat.

SafePlex’s “O” Port design avoids this problem by having

the “O” Port Plate flow-port located in the upper 1/3
of the plate. The “O” Port plate slides between the Flange Plates,
and never losses contact with the Flange Plates. That is different
from a knife and /or cage valve. The “O” Port Plate slides

providing virtually zero resistance to flow. Valve closure is

achieved by sliding the “O” Port Plate downward into the
lower 1/3 of the Flange Plates.

Quarter Turn and Ball Valves have the additional problem of depending on

S
a pin to connect the valve stem to the Ball or ¼ Turn internals. If that pin
is sheared, partial stroke testing will not verify proper operation
of the valve’s internals.

SafePlex’s “O” Port ESD valve provides proof-positive feedback of the “O”
Port Plate movement by monitoring limit switches and visible movement.
Because the “O” Port Plate extends out the bottom of the valve assembly,
the monitoring of the SafePlex “O” Port ESD valve is done at the
bottom of the “O” Port Plate assembly, absolutely confirming valve
movement. Whereas all other ESD valves have to monitor the valve
stem movement, and then infer that the internals are likewise moving correctly.

SILvalve-3 --- The Safest ESD Valve
PARTIAL STROKE TESTING --- CLOSED VALVE
SafePlex “O” Port ESD Valve supports on-line partial stroke testing of a ‘closed’
valve. This is particularly useful for vent and flare block valve applications. For the
first time a closed block valve can be partial stroke tested without venting or
flaring. Because of the “O” Port Plate design the “O” Port Plate can go pass 0% (
the closed position) to a negative 10% position. This allows for movement in the
“O” Port Plate without opening the valve.
The testing works equally as well for an air-to-open or for an air-to-close valve.
For the air-to-open application, the ESD SILenoid is vented and the TEST
SILenoid is energized while the “O” Port ESD Valve is in the ‘closed’ position. “O” Port
During the TEST cycle the TEST SILenoid is de-energized causing the “O” Port Plate
Plate to go to a hard zero (-10%) position. When the test is completed, the TEST
SILenoid is energized which re-establishes the live zero position. CLOSED
VALVE
PARTIAL STROKE TESTING --- OPEN VALVE
Because of the near zero pressure drop of the “O” Port ESD valve in the open
position, the increase flow resistance created by the partial stroke testing is still less Flow-Ports
then the average pressure losses of a fully open cage valve. Whereas cage, ball and ¼
turn valve cause increase wear because of the redirecting of the fluid flow during the
TEST, the “O” Port ESD Valve does not experience such wear. The flow stratums
are always in a straight-line.
The “O” Port ESD valve will support a one or two SILenoid approach for partial
stroke testing and full open air sourcing. For the one SILenoid approach, the
SILenoid is commanded close until the feedback ‘confirms’ ESD valve movement.
The two SILenoid approach provides one SILenoid with 100% open air source and
one SILenoid with a 90% open air source. The two SILenoid approach provides a
hard stop for the TEST. Also the second SILenoid provides redundancy for the OPEN
SILenoid with the 100% air source (at the 90% open setting). VALVE
