Systems, Connections, Details

f An innovative structural system from concept to construction

f Detailed and descriptive, based on photographic accounts of building

phases

Diagrids are load-bearing structures made of steel diagonal grids. They were
first used in the great buildings of the turn of the millennium, such as the
Swiss Re Tower in London (“The Gherkin”) and the Hearst Magazine Tower
in New York City. Dagrids owe their ensuing popularity not only to their stun-
ning aesthetic value, but also to their very tangible benefits: lateral loading
capacity, a massive saving of material, a significant gain in open, usable floor
area, and increased flexibility. At its opening in 2014, the Leadenhall Buil-
ding in London will be the first skyscraper without a bearing inner core—

University of Waterloo, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. She is the Past President
of the Society of Building Science Educators – an international group of Language English
academics that teach in the area of sustainable design. She is Past President of
the Building Technology Educators’ Society, a group dedicated to vitalizing
teaching in the areas of structures and construction.
She works with the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction and the Steel
Structures Education Foundation of Canada to develop interactive multimedia
case studies to promote the teaching of steel construction in schools of
architecture across Canada.
Terri Meyer Boake lectures extensively on Architecturally Exposed Structural
Steel. Much of this research was used to inform her recent book Understanding
Steel Design: An Architectural Design Manual. This theme of AESS will be
further developed in her next publication Architecturally Exposed Structural
Steel: Specifications, Connections, Details, due for publication in 2015.
She is an avid photographer and has spent significant time traveling to document
and bring noteworthy buildings to the attention of the community. Noting a
deficiency and lack of critical construction process information available in
current publications, her goal has been to document and present buildings with a
“construction eye”.
