“Banana Research and Development Complex”

(Raising Productivity and Enriching Competitive Banana Industry)

Abstract

The Philippines is the second largest exporter of bananas after Ecuador,

with some 2.6 m tons exported in year 2017. Locally produced varieties are

Cavendish, Latundan, Lakatan, Inarnibal, Amas, Bungulan, Pitogo, Morado,

Inabaniko, and Señorita. That year, the exports from the Philippines

(essentially Cavendish cultivars) made up 98% of the Asian banana trade. Two

thirds of the exported volumes were shipped to Japan, China and South Korea.

Philippines are also seen as one of the strongest producers of this food

product worldwide because of our low production cost and quality. The banana

production and exporting in our country continues to see tremendous growth and

popularity.

The Philippine banana industry is one of our best agricultural products. It

is estimated that 35 billion pesos is invested in this agricultural industry which

includes the cost of infrastructure, planting and distribution. The banana industry

sector is looking at 2018 with better opportunities and improved production as the

government responded to the issues and concerns affecting the industry the past

years. The government initiated the Harmonized National Research & Development

Agenda for 2017-2022, which is divided into 5 sectors. National Integrated Basic

Research Agenda (NIMBRA), Health, Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources

(AANR), Industry Energy and Emerging Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction

and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR CCA). Agriculture Aquatic and Natural

Resources (AANR), sector supports organic agriculture, halal food production, food

safety and traceability initiatives, and the development of genetically modified

organisms as long as it is compliant with biosafety rules and regulations. In the

AANR program, one of the commodity fruit crop focus in the field of agriculture is

banana.

The proposed Banana Research and development Complex aims to

rehabilitate the local banana industry from diseases by evaluating new

technologies for farmers’ adoption. It will be located at region 1 Ilocos

province to help the banana industry in Ilocos to recovered from the

devastation wrought by banana diseases. The development of innovative and

improve extension modalities for the efficient transfer of technologies to the users.

It is also assumed that the architectural design and planning contributes to the

solutions for the existing problems of the said study. This proposed structure can

contribute to the Philippine Development Agenda 2017-2022 through the research

and development of advanced and emerging technologies such as biotechnology,

genomics, bioinformatics, nanotechnology, nuclear technology, space technology,

electronics and automation, and ICT as R&D tools to find S&T solutions to AANR

problems or develop new products with significant potential impact to the sector.

This structure will house different innovative technologies and methods that will

help uplift agricultural productivity, efficiency and competitiveness. The use

of biologically based approaches and nanotechnology for soil nutrient

management, pest and disease management, optimization, crop production

system research, yield improvement, post-harvest development. With the

help of these innovative methods and technology it can promote and sustain

the development of a globally competitive banana industry.

Background of the Study

The structure will be a housing the innovative way of cultivating

banana crop, optimization of the crop, conservation, utilization and

management. The Research and Development Complex will works on four

major thrust areas of research, Crop Improvement, Crop Production, Post

Harvest Management and Crop Protection. It has well-equipped laboratories

for tissue-culture, bio-technology, soil science, nutrient management,

physiology, biochemistry, entomology, nematology, fungal, bacterial, viral

pathology and post-harvest technology research. Research conducted about

Food Innovation helps the researchers to determine which seed/plants offer

the tastes, textures and other characteristics valued by consumers.

Research from structure will provide Food Innovation also provides gene

marker data for the germplasm and seedling screening programs.

Statement of the Problem

BANANA RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COMPLEX

Department of Architecture

The banana industry has been adversely affected by security, climate

change, disease, raising fears exporters could lose its market globally. This

has to be address with less land, less water, and less labor to accommodate

the demand for these inputs from the expanding non-agricultural sectors.

By the help of said structure a place for research and enriching banana crop,

with the help of the innovative way of cultivating, optimization, crop

production system research, yield improvement, post-harvest development.

Significance of the Study

A proposed structure that is well planned, designed and well study

helps to understand the pathways and impact of technological progress.

The technology transfer to the structure it-self, helping to modernize the

sector and increase agricultural productivity, efficiency and competitiveness.

Objective of the Study

1. Use of biologically-based approaches as well as nanotechnology

in crop cultural management (e.g. soil nutrient management, pest

and disease management)

2. Optimization of crop production protocols

3. Development of good agricultural practices

4. Breeding to develop improved crop varieties, including genomic

studies to improve yield and other economically important traits

of crops

Scope and Limitations

Applying innovative approach in planning and designing of the

structure, the transfer of technology. Development of innovative design and

improvement of technology to the structure that will incorporate the

organization of spaces and facilities that shall be needed in Raising

Productivity and Enriching Competitive Banana Industry

Assumption and Hypothesis

The study assumes that the proposed structure will help contributed

significantly in achieving food security by increasing the yield potential of

rice by the help of irrigated systems, by means of research and technology

by reducing the crop maturity period and achieving yield stability by

developing resistance against major insects and diseases in the modern

high-yielding varieties.
