"T&CM practices vary widely from country to country with certain practices
(sometimes called modalities) regarded differently depending on the culture,
understanding and accessibility of conventional medicine. A practice where significant
progress has been made is acupuncture. Although acupuncture was originally a
feature of traditional Chinese medicine, it is now used world wide. According to reports
supplied by 129 countries, 80% of them now recognize the use of acupuncture (Fig.)”

Role of Government in its promotion
 In 1996, Govt. of West Bengal recognized acupuncture as
a system of therapy, established B. K Basu Memorial
Research & Training Institute of Acupuncture and
appointed doctors at state hospitals
 In 2017, Govt. of Maharashtra has recognized the
Acupuncture as a system of therapy and formed
Council of Acupuncture (MAC)
 Funding through several research projects by Govt. of
India to Acupuncture Institutes since '90s, Important
positive concluding remark by ICMR under Govt. of India,
in 1997 on the "Comparative Efficacy of Acupuncture in
definite clinical condition",

Emergence of ASA India
In India, several associations & platforms functioning at different
levels in Acupuncture, but urgent need felt to unite all these
units and all categories of Acupuncturists under one umbrella.
Finally, at Ludhiana Acupuncture Hospital, Punjab in Dec. 2013,
new All India platform named Acupuncture Science Association
(ASA) emerged as a national level association

 Now Acupuncture Science Association
(ASA) is the largest organization of
Acupuncture practitioners in the country
having members from 23 Indian States &
Union Territories of India and 8 countries
in Abroad.
ASA India had already undertaken
the following responsibilities
 Enrolling the new members throughout India
 Forming state branches
 Publishing ASA News Letter
 Organising Free Medical Camp, Seminars,
CME, Public Awareness Program,
 Propagation through media
 Interaction with different authorities
 Move for the recognition of system of therapy
in centre and states
 Drafted Ethical Code of Conduct for the
Acupuncturists

training on Acupuncture-Moxibustion (AM) for
existing Acupuncture Practitioners in order to
revive the great teachings of late Dr. B.K.
Basu (Doyen of Acupuncture in India) in line
with Acupuncture Training Guideline of World
Health Organisation (W.H.O.)

This proposal was drafted jointly by
Indian Research Institute for Integrated Medicine
(IRIIM) Howrah, West Bengal (the pioneer
Acupuncture Research Institute recognized by
Govt. of India, DSIR as SIRO) and
Ludhiana Acupuncture Medical College & Dr.
Kotnis Hospital, Punjab (the oldest Acupuncture
College & Hospital in India)
These two Organizations are the
main founders of ASA India

invited to join the high level Inter Departmental Committee (IDC)

India by 2003 order till the enactment
of ‘The recognition of new system of
medicine'.
At this historic situation, ASA India
already proposed to Central and State
Govt. to take initiative to start new
Colleges in different states to introduce
Full time Degree (51/2 yrs.) and Diploma
(31/2 yrs.) courses on Acupuncture
System of Therapy for 10+ 2 Fresher as
per guideline of World Health
Organisation (WHO) and State Health
regulatory body if any.
ASA India already has fraternal relation with neighboring countries
like China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Western countries
