Weekly Journal

Regular evaluation updates are required, as with every unit. Please

remember to take photos and get behind the scenes footage as you film.
You might find it easier if you note down a record of what you did each day
in a diary form.

Please use the following guidance to help you with each week.

Week 1 This week you worked on your research

What have you been We have been asked to create a documentary on a topic of
asked to do? our choice. We have chosen to do a documentary because this
is something which we have done before and from what we’ve
learned we can apply our past findings to this documentary to
make it better and whatever could have been improved last
time, we can apply to this project. Our documentary is going to
be on football hooliganism. This is a topic which will be
interesting to find out about and there are many places we can
go to film our documentary, we plan to go around London and
get footage of football stadiums such as Millwall and West Ham.
We are also planning to go to different pubs in the area and see
if we can find people who have been involved in hooliganism
and/or people who know about it.
How has writing the How have you expanded on your initial idea following the
brief helped you to guidelines set? How did the group come to a decision? We
finalise your idea? have expanded on our initial idea by planning how we are
going to film this documentary and by planning a day out in
London so we can complete our tasks. Writing the brief helped
to finalise our idea as this allowed us to narrow down to one
main idea and once we decided what new were going to do,
this gave us time to plan how we were going to execute it.
What did you learn from What did you practice? How successful was it? Why will this be
practising the useful in your production? Most of the conventions were learned
conventions you form when we did our previous documentary task. However a
few other conventions were re capped such as how to position

cameras properly when interviewing. This will be needed for
when we film our interviews and vox pops.
This is a picture of us practising with the camera set up.

Week 2 This week you worked on your planning

How has analysing What have you learnt? What must you include for it to be
videos helped you to conventional to the genre? I watched a documentary on
understand the genre football hooligans called ‘Football fight club’. It was about
hooliganism in the UK and it focusses on hooligans who have

been involved in hooliganism, people who are trying to get
themselves out of the lifestyle and people who are part of firms.
Analysing this documentary helped with research as it covered
different sides to the story. We can explain this in the
documentary and talk about why people join firms whilst also
talking about why firms are bad for people.
How did making How does processing the results in this way help you understand
infographics help you them? Did you find out anything interesting? We have an

making. This will help us to process research and information as

we film our documentary as we can refer to the information on
how a documentar is produced and apply this to our own
production by looking at where b roll and archive footage is
used, what kind of music we could use for our production, and
how to work with archive footage to make the documentary tell
a story.
We were also reminded of the rule of thirds, which is a
technique which will be used when doing our piece to camera.
What did you learn from Consider script writing, choosing locations, actors We learned all

How has your idea Our idea hasn’t really changed much since the start of our
developed/changed planning, however our idea has developed in the sense that we
during the planning have decided that we are going to go to places in London

Week 3 This week you worked on your production

What How did your planning help you when out shooting? Did the script help your
practical actors? Did the storyboards ensure you moved the camera properly? Where
work have the locations suitable? We planned our day in London effectively and
efficiently by looking at train times and planning where to go first and work

and how cover all of our locations in that day and get all of our filming done and
helpful make sure that it was to the standard we wanted. The script and production
was your schedule was followed according to plan, and we faced no issues. The
locations were also very suitable and we got a lot of b roll footage to use.

What We went to millwall first of all, as this club has a huge history of football

use and rivals and West Ham are also a club with a big firm. We went to QPR to talk

hooliganism. We also went to surrey quays as this is where the docks separate

out quite slow and then gets really heavy and loud, and I linked up the part
where Owen said ‘Violence’ to the change in sound so I could put a clip of
football hooligans fighting on top of the loud part of the music.
This shows where I put more archive footage and pictures of football

hooliganism over the years on top of the voiceover.

This part shows the editing on the Millwall segment. I chose quite a dark
choice of music as it has connotations of danger. This timeline also shows b
roll footage and the main piece to camera.

This part shows the West Ham segment, much like the Millwall segment it has
b roll and archive footage and a more upbeat music choice but still quite
heavy.

This shows the surrey quays segment as well as the QPR segment. Both parts
were quite short so I linked them up with the same music. Both have b roll.
This is the part about international hooliganism. It fades in from black to show
a mix of b roll footage of Wembley and archive footage of matches being
played inside the stadium from before. The music I chose was ‘I predict a riot’
by the Kaiser Chiefs as it starts out quite eery, but then breaks loud into the
chorus which is where I put more archive footage of hooligans and ended
the documentary.

What There was a fault I noticed when editing, in one of the clips owen says
issues did ‘Millwall’ instead of ‘West Ham’ , although this didn’t have anything to do
you with the editing, I found that there was nothing we could have really done
about this and so just had to work with it.

Week 4 This week you worked on your production

What were your production

strengths? My production strengths lie mainly under the filming. I
produced some great b roll footage which was good for
our production as it was relevant and looked great over the
presenting. As a group, our strengths were also filming as we
set up together and filmed great presenting segments
which worked well for our documentary.
In terms of planning, we planned quite efficiently as we
knew everything we wanted to do on the day of filming and
we got it all done.
Editing went well as the clips were easy to find and put in
order, as well as all of the b roll footage and with all of the
music and transitions in between, it ended up looking good,
although there were sudden transitions between locations.
What were your production Throughout the filming, we realised that we could not cover
weaknesses? everywhere we wanted to film. We had planned to go to
Brentford, as well as some pubs in the areas we had visited
to see if we could get some firsthand information and
interviews from locals about hooliganism. Instead we just
decided to stick to Millwall, West Ham, QPR and Wembley,
and also went to surrey quays instead to cover more
locations. This wasn’t necessarily an issue, but this did mean
that the location recce had to be changed.
Other weaknesses included the sound quality. In areas
where there was a lot of sound in te background from things
like traffic, it was hard to record the talking properly,
although the talking can be heard throughout, it is hard to
concentrate sometimes through all of the background
noise.
Finding music was quite a challenge because I wanted to
keep quite a dark and ominous atmosphere throughout as
this connotes danger, but it was quite hard to maintain the
same kind of music throughout, especially with the ‘I predict
a riot’ section at the end.

How did you work as a We worked as a group by all setting up the equipment and
group? taking time to see what our shots would look like and we
shot our scenes multiple times to choose which ones would
look best. We also all took turns filming b roll footage to
make sure that we had enough. We worked well together
as we had all been in this situation before where we had
filmed documentaries on location, so we knew how to work
but also we had the opportunity to improve from previous
projects in terms of not only pre production and planning
but also filming and sound.
What was your role and
how did you perform? My roll was mainly filming b roll footage, misst of the b roll
footage we have was from me and I also helped set up and
hold the equipment. I performed this well as no tasks were
really performed independently (except for owens
presenting) So we all helped each other out.
Also had to edit my own production (as did everybody
else).

as what they think about it, however we did not actually
talk to people about it. This would have helped as we could
have got first hand information about football hooliganism
and had real life stories in our documentary.
Additionally, the choices in music were also quite similar. I
went for quite a dark tone on the music which sets an
intimidating atmosphere. Football fight club also uses slow
and every music which has connotations of violence.
This is a screenshot of archive footage of football hooligans
from football fight club, one of the documentaries I

documentary as I also used archive footage of hooligans in
my own documentary, used in between segments.

presenter is just giving facts from researched incidents.
