Foreword
2015 was a year of significant change and
achievement for the JHC; the Chinook force
completed its long-term commitments in
Afghanistan and in relief, the Puma Mk2 made its
first operational deployment on Op TORAL.

he JHC also said
farewell to 16 Air
Assault Brigade after
16 years. However,
our close ties with the Brigade
will continue as we exercise
with them throughout 2016
and beyond. We worked hard
to regain the skills required in
the contingent environment,
and this saw our people
exercising around the world,
often with NATO allies. This
culminated with the COUGAR
deployment and Ex TRIDENT
JUNCTURE which saw an array
of JHC aircraft deployed in
the embarked environment,
projecting the key capabilities
of LIFT, FIND and ATTACK
from HMS Ocean among other

Vector Aerospace Commemorates
Final UK Lynx Helicopter
Depth Maintenance Event

ector Aerospace (www.

(MRO) services, held a recognition
ceremony on Friday 4th December
to commemorate the last

Fleetlands site in Gosport.
The event, which recognised
the site’s 37-year support of the
UK Armed Forces’ Lynx fleet, was
attended by many of the people
who have worked on the platform
over the years, along with senior

(JHC) and Navy Command.
Throughout its life, the Lynx
– which has held the official
helicopter world speed record
since 1986 – has undergone many

routines. Since 2005, over 600

Lynx is now reaching the end
of its operational life with
the UK Armed Forces, and

Ministry of Defence (MOD).

Afghanistan, and which is still
on active service around the

he Fahnenband, a
Ribbon of Honour made
of silk in the German
national colours, was
presented to the Regiment by
Brigadier General Martin Hein,
the Defence Attaché at the
German Embassy in London
for their dedicated work in
Germany and was received
by Major Stuart Hughes, the
Regiment’s Second in Command.

the overall MLSP programme

Although the aircraft looks
little different to the current
Merlin Mk3, it brings with it a
significant capability increase.”
Under the MLSP contract
awarded to AgustaWestland in
December 2013, further iMk3s
will be delivered to CHF to meet
Initial Operating Capability
in time for when the Sea King
HC Mk4 retires from service.
From late 2017, 25 fully
upgraded Merlin Mk4 aircraft will
commence delivery to CHF. The
Merlin Mk4 will have an upgraded
avionics suite as well as provide
a full amphibious capability
with an automatic folding
main rotor head and tail fold,
optimised for ship operations.
Lt Cdr Ben McGreal,
846 NAS, said;
“Today marks another key
milestone in the history of the
Commando Helicopter Force.
With more iMk3s due to arrive
soon, we’ll be well on our way
to delivering real capability
to our primary customer – the
Royal Marines. It’s also not often
that you can say that you’re
the first to fly a new type of
aircraft in the Royal Navy, so
today is a very special day!”
The Merlin iMk3 and Mk4
aircraft will be operated by 845
and 846 Naval Air Squadrons
in extreme climates, conditions
and terrain ranging from the
Arctic to tropical jungle to the
desert and from ship to shore in
support of the Royal Marines.

a new generation of digital
helicopters designed to cope
with a cluttered battlespace
using its powerful camera system,
upgraded engines, a redesigned
tail that improves durability
and stealth, state of the art
cockpit instruments, and high
tech secure communications.
Trident Juncture is the first
outing for an entire Royal Navy
Wildcat squadron, comprising
847’s first nine (of 16) pilots and
65 personnel – a mixture of
aircrew, engineers, logistics staff
and mission planners from the
Army Air Corps who have been
preparing the mapping database
for the digital systems onboard.
Commander Graeme Spence,
Commanding Officer of 847 NAS,
as well as Commanding Officer
of the Tailored Air Group on HMS
Ocean, said Trident Juncture
was an excellent opportunity
to prove the operational
capability of the helicopter.
“The exercise has given us
fantastic interaction with the
Landing Forces as well as access
to a wide range of NATO ships
which has expanded our capability
as aircrew working with aviation
partners in different environments,
landscapes and climates,” he said.
As part of the Commando
Helicopter Force, 847 NAS is
the first operational squadron
to convert across to the Wildcat
BRH and have been embarked
on HMS Ocean as the lead
aviation squadron working
with Navy Merlins, Army
Apaches and RAF Chinook, all
providing aviation support for
the Lead Commando Group, 45
Commando Royal Marines.
However with such a new,
and advanced, airframe there

will always be teething issues as
the Royal Navy engineers have
discovered during the exercise.
Chief Aircraft Engineering
Technician Daryl Prichard, the
senior maintenance rating,
said Wildcat was far more
complex than Lynx and that
was generating new learning
opportunities for his team.
He added: “It’s still a new
aircraft that we are testing in
the different environments we
operate in, so it’s going to be
cold weather next and then onto
the heat of the desert. If this
helicopter is going to do what it
is designed to do then we have
to test it in varying conditions.
“As a result this has been a busy
deployment as we are learning
but there are also a large number
of aircraft working alongside each
other on a single deck so there
is a lot of shuffling around, with
programmes changing and then
changing again. So while we may
not be flying all the time there is a
lot going on in the background.”
As an entirely new platform,
Wildcat can perform a range
of tasks from surveillance and
reconnaissance, command and
control, control and direction
of joint fires, re-supply and the
provision of force protection
using its powerful M3M 0.50
calibre heavy machine gun.
It was designed with
versatility in mind meaning
it can be fitted for different
roles quickly and easily.
Royal Navy pilot Lieutenant
Alex Lovell-Smith, said
Wildcat was proving itself on
Exercise Trident Juncture.
“We have taken four Wildcat
to sea working on a mixed
type operation with Apache,
Chinook and Merlin; this is
core business and we are
learning quickly,” he added.
“Wildcat performs well in
the maritime environment; we
have been able to operate with
a wide variety of NATO shipping
both day and night, whilst still
retaining our ability to transition
through the littoral and into
the land environment. We have
been re-setting from Afghanistan
to being at sea again and so
regaining our maritime skill-set.
Equally, we have personnel who
might never have been to sea
and so that, along with working
on a new helicopter, means
Trident Juncture has been a steep
learning curve for all involved.”
The Wildcat programme will
deliver aircraft to both the Royal
Navy and Army with 847 NAS
having two Army Signallers posted
to the squadron for two years
to prepare mapping databases
and work on mission planning
and the extraction of video
following sorties for analysis.
Lt Lovell-Smith added: “Wildcat
has the most complex, advanced
communications suite we have
ever used, and as such it offers
much more than previous types
I have flown. As we operate the
aircraft its flight envelope is being
expanded. For example, halfway
through this exercise we had an
increase to our maximum speed
and the weight we are allowed to
carry, among other limitations.
“Trident Juncture has given
us the opportunity to cement our
relationship with 45 Commando
Royal Marines who are also taking
part. As part of the exercise,
Wildcat provided over 12 hours
of over-watch against a light
armoured threat to a helicopter
assault force inserted ashore by
Chinook and the US Marine Corps
Osprey; it went really well, and
it was immensely satisfying for
the aircrew involved to provide
a service to troops ashore.”
The squadron has the
UK’s first Forward Air Control
(Airborne) capability in the
post Afghanistan era.
This allows suitably trained
pilots to co-ordinate fast jet
and helicopter airborne fires
from any NATO nation, and was
used to great effect with Polish
F-16s as part of the exercise.
All 847 NAS pilots are
trained to call in artillery and
Naval Gunfire Support from
the air, which was again used
to support 45 Cdo in their
final raid of the exercise.
Upon their return to the
UK, 847 NAS will have little
time to rest on the success of
Trident Juncture as they will
shortly deploy to Norway to test
Wildcat in Arctic conditions.
Commander Spence
said: “Having successfully
demonstrated our ability to work
in the maritime environment
we will have a quick turnaround
before re-deploying to Norway
for essential cold weather training
and then later next year we plan
to undertake desert training. All
of this is required in order to fully
generate the squadron to its full
operational capability.”

This year saw members from all 3 flights of 27
Squadron support the Royal Navy’s largest
deployment of 2015, Exercise COUGAR.
T
he Ex served as a test for
the Joint Expeditionary
Force Maritime (JEFM)
and allowed Force
Generation (FGen) within the
Chinook Force, to build maritime
experience. The 2 Chinook
aircraft worked within a Tailored
Air Group (TAG) that included
Apache, Wildcat and Merlin
aircraft. A total of 12 aircraft
embarked on HMS Ocean and
this meant a very busy flight deck.
In addition to building maritime
experience, the Chinooks were
also deployed to provide support
to 45 Commando, W Coy.
The first phase commenced
with WADER drills which served
to ‘blow the cobwebs away’
and re-acquaint all involved
with operations on board ship.
WADER involved all assault
troops practicing emplaning
and deplaning with the Chinook.
The troops then put this into
practice with a daytime assault
on Tregantle Fort, Plymouth.

MV-22 Ospreys, who began to
conduct deck landing serials. The
transit culminated in a run ashore
in Toulon, however before being
allowed some well deserved shore
time, the RAF participated in “Out

all rubbish from ship to shore by
hand, a particularly unpleasant
task. Once this was complete,

saw the British ships joined by
the French Ship Dixmude for Ex
Corsican Lion (CL). This offered
the 27 Sqn crews a valuable
opportunity to conduct deck
provided support during the landings to another NATO ship.
Distinguished Visitors (DV) Day Ex CL also provided the crews

The Ex provided valuable
training for the Chinook Force
and introduced those with limited
maritime experience to life aboard
a Royal Navy ship, along with
the many challenges that this
brings. Despite a few personnel
taking some time to find their
‘sea legs’, the Chinooks flew over
176 hrs, carried out 342 deck
landings, moved various USLs
and conducted numerous tasking
serials with 45 Cdo. Ex COUGAR
has considerably expanded
27 Sqn’s maritime experience
before we commence R2 standby
duties in the coming year.

Final Chinook Mk6 arrives at RAF Odiham

(ACMI) of 669 Squadron, I was
tasked to ensure this training was
achieved safely and accurately.
On the morning of Friday
16th October 2015, myself and
three others departed Dishforth
Airfield. We were bound for
Kirkcudbright Training Centre,
located approximately 30
miles west of Dumfries. We
planned to arrive on the Friday
preceding the exercise in order
to co-ordinate the arrival and
storage of the ammunition. This
also gave us the opportunity
to sight the HLS, prepare
the range area, take over the
accommodation and familiarise
ourselves with the local customs
and culture of Scotland.
The main body headed
weather hampered the first
day’s firing due to low cloud.
However, background activity
was conducted and aircrew
were able to achieve their
weapon handling test on the
different weapon systems. As
soon as the weather cleared,
live firing was able to take place
and some important refresher
training was accomplished.
By the end of the week, all
the air crewmen were able to
complete their day and night
ACMT shoots on M3M. In
addition, all Aircraft Commanders
were able to qualify as gun
controllers on the M3M. We
were also joined by WO2 Lyall
from Aviation Standards who
kindly assessed both me and the
9 Regiment ACMI (Air Crewman
Instructor), SSgt Booker,
passing us both as instructors.
After the last aircraft landed
on the Friday, exercise personnel
were stood down over the
weekend. This afforded some
people time to get home to see
family and loved ones. Those
who remained in Kirkcudbright
had the opportunity to sample
some local delights at the
Kirkcudbright food fair. To

is the Royal Navy’s contribution
to Arrcade Fusion 2015, the
annual workout of NATO’s Allied
Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC).
The UK-based force has
been in existence for more
than two decades and stages
a major exercise to see how
it might respond to a fictional
security or humanitarian crisis.
The last couple of Arrcade
Fusions were played out at
RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall.
This year, however, it’s being
staged across around 75,000
square miles – about ten times

Commando Helicopter
Force (CHF) consists of three
Naval Air Squadrons (NAS);
845, 846 and 847 NAS. The
Sea King Mk4 aircraft of the
Commando Helicopter Force
will be retired from service by
April 2016. Its replacement,
the Merlin Mk4 will be derived
from Merlin Mk3 airframes
currently in service with 846
NAS at RNAS Yeovilton and
with 845 NAS at RAF Benson
until they transition to RNAS
Yeovilton in June 2015.
The Naval Air Squadrons
of CHF are integrated
under the command of a
Headquarters, established
to operate helicopters afloat
or ashore in support of the
UK armed forces. It is a
combined Royal Navy and
Royal Marine force that flies
helicopters that specialise
in amphibious warfare.
The pilots are well-trained
as they combine commando
combat and survival skills with
advanced flying skills. They
operate Sea King, Merlin and
Wildcat helicopters in extreme
climates and conditions; their
ability to work in terrain ranging
from arctic to tropical jungle is
second to none. Operations
in Borneo in the 1960s earned
them the moniker ‘Junglies’
from the troops on the ground,
which current and veteran
Junglies covet to this day.
CHF’s home base is RNAS
Yeovilton in Somerset but
all the squadrons deploy
regularly on detachments and
exercises around the world.

Pegasus marks a new future
for 16X
Pegasus has become the emblem of 16 Air
Assault Brigade as part of changes to the
Brigade’s structure and command relationships.

P
egasus is recognised
internationally as the
defining symbol of British
Airborne Forces and
replaces the Striking Eagle used
as 16 Air Asslt Bde’s emblem
since its formation in 1999.
Pegasus has been adopted
as 16 Air Asslt Bde leaves Joint
Helicopter Command (JHC) to
come under the direct command
of the newly formed Headquarters
Field Army. The Attack Helicopter
Force - formed of Wattisham-
based 3 and 4 Regiments Army
Air Corps and 7 Air Assault
Battalion Royal Electrical and
Mechanical Engineers - is
remaining within JHC along
the military’s other helicopter
forces, but will continue to work
closely with 16 Air Asslt Bde.
The change was formally
marked on Wed 25 Nov at a sunrise
parade at Merville Barracks in
Colchester. Some 2,000 troops
and civilian support staff from
all of 16 Air Asslt Bde’s units
gathered to watch the Striking
Eagle flag lowered for the last time
and Pegasus raised in its place.
The ceremony, led by Senior
Chaplain Reverend Alan Steele
MBE, retired the Striking Eagle
with dignity and gave soldiers a
chance to reflect on the operations
in Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone,
Macedonia, Iraq, Afghanistan,
Libya and Mali for which it served
as the Brigade’s emblem.
The Pegasus adopted by 16
Air Asslt Bde is the same emblem
used by the 1st and 6th Airborne
Divisions and the 44th Indian
Airborne Division in the Second
World War. The parachute and
glider troops who served at
battles such as D-Day, Arnhem,
the Rhine Crossings and in Burma
set the high standards expected
of today’s Airborne Forces.

A year of high profile
achievements set

arly September saw 50
RAF personnel from
bases all over the UK
and Europe train and
compete in the week long Royal
Air Force Championships behind
the boat in Wakeboard, Water-
ski Slalom and Jump. Hosted at
SUWWC and working closely
with OWSC, the championships
week is designed to develop
Service personnel of any
standard, including absolute
novice, to be able to compete
competently in the sport by
the end of the week, with the
added station team challenge
encouraging all participants
to compete in all disciplines.
The summer Cable
Championships continues to see
a growing cadre of competitors.
The full system at Boxend hosted
the event and saw 46 airmen
hitting rails, boxes and kickers
for 3 days before the champion

throughout the UK, notable
names include Sgt James ‘Cookie’
Cook, Cpls Ross and Rich Phillips
and Flt Lt Emma Phillips. AOD’s
throughout the season and the
UK nationals have seen the team
put out a competitive show
and reinforce the level of sport
within today’s Royal Air Force.
The Phillips brothers set the
standard early in the summer;
travelling to Portugal to compete
in the Portuguese nationals the
brothers claimed 2 of the podium
steps for the UK. Out again at
the UK nationals, Ross claimed
4th before entering the European
championships and moving on to
the World Champs, where he was
knocked out in the semi-finals.
One last big event to finish
the season was the ‘Grass
Roots Development Day’ held
in October; working with
Oxford Wakeboard and Ski
Club (OWSC), SUWWC held
a day to offer introductory
sets to RAF personnel from
across the southern region. 48
planned sets to cover water-ski
and wakeboard saw 2 boats
working flat out all day; there
was a great turn out and it
was encouraging to see such a
phenomenal level of interest
during the final push of 2015.
The Southern Units Water-ski
and Wakeboard Club operates at
Queensford lake in Berinsfield,
which is just south of Oxford.
The club is run by the Royal Air
Force but welcomes members
from all three services. We work
in partnership with Oxford
Wakeboard and Ski Club and
can offer competition standard
facilities for Wakeboard, Slalom,
Trick and Jump with coaching
from experienced national
level riders and coaches.
We like a challenge, next
year the aim is to introduce more
people to the sport, achieve more
representation at competitions
and get some shortening’s
in on the competition.
