CONNECTION REQUIREMENTS of MEDIUM-VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER

for Container Solution without Transformer (SG2000/SG2500)

Contents:
This document provides very important supplementary information for the installation manual of Central Inverters
without transformer. Before wiring and connections of medium-voltage transformers, please read this document
carefully.

Target Readers:
This document is provided to people who need to install medium-voltage transformers which are connected to
Central Inverters without transformer.
The installers must be qualified electricians.

Declarations:
Wiring and connections other than the contents described in this document may endanger the operational safety and
void warranty claims.
Specifications are subject to change without notice.

The following requirements must be observed when installing medium-voltage transformers:

1. The integrated SG500/630MX central Inverters in the container, all are pulse width modulation inverters without
transformer. The transformer should comply with this requirement.
2. The inverter output voltage is sinusoidal type. When the inverter is in operation, the impulse voltage of
maximum ±1000V can be generated for single phase to the ground The LV side of the transformer and the
maximum continuous current of lightning protection for the LV side of the transformer should comply with this
requirement.
3. The line-to-line voltage on the low-voltage side of the transformer must endure the voltage as shown in the
following table.
Inverter type Output voltage of inverter / low voltage of transformer
SG500MX 315V
SG630MX 315V

4. The line-to-line voltage on the high-voltage side of medium-voltage transformer should comply with the
power grid voltage of installation site requirements. Some usual voltages are 11kV/20kV/25kV/27kV/33kV
etc. Ttransformer with a tap changer on the high-voltage side is recommended in order to adapt to different
medium-voltage grid flexibly.
5. Central Inverters without transformer, via the following two connection types, can feed their output power to
medium-voltage grid.

6. A double winding transformer selected, winding configurations Dyn11, YNd11 and so on, can be used.

7. If the two-winding transformer is used, its short circuit impedance between the LV winding and MV winding
should be 6.5%, with an allowable range between 6% and 10%. This value is measured when the MV windings
is short circuited and a voltage with rated frequency is applied to one of the LV winding until it is sufficient to
circulate nominal load current (see below).

8. At an ambient temperature of 25℃, transformers should withstand 110% of total load rating.
9. The transformer’s capacity should meet the requirement of inverter’s max. AC output power.
10. The noise level of medium-voltage transformers should not exceed 55dB.
11. The service life of medium-voltage transformers should be at least 30 years.
12. The insulation temperature class of medium-voltage transformers should be at least Class F. See the following
table to obtain detailed insulation class information.
Insulation class A E B F H N C

Maximum allowable temperature(℃) 105 120 130 155 180 200 220

Winding temperature limits(K) 60 75 80 100 125 135 150

13. The total harmonic current withstand capacity of the transformer should be no less than 5% of fundamental
current @ nominal power.
14. The DC current injection withstand capacity of the transformer should be no less than 1% of the fundamental
current @ nominal power.
15. The 3 phase unbalance withstand capacity of the transformer should be no less than 5% of the fundamental
current @ nominal power.
16. Three phase cables from the AC side of inverter to the LV side of transformer should be the same length.
17. The weighted efficiency of medium-voltage transformers should be at least 99%.
18. Very important notice on the neutral point of low-voltage side:
(1) For a primary “delta” configuration, because no neutral point exists, do the wiring and connections
according to Installation Manual directly.
(2) For a primary “wye” configuration,
 If no neutral point exists, do the wiring and connections according to Installation Manual directly.
 If a neutral point presents, leave it idle. Grounding is strictly forbidden.
19. If the altitude of installation site is higher than 1000m, the maximum allowable temperature and external
insulation gap must be taken into account at all times.
20. Transformer protection degree: ≥ IP20 (for indoor installation); ≥ IP54 (for outdoor installation).
21. If the high-voltage side of transformer has grounding requirements, the grounding type should be taken into
account at all times.
22. The transformer is an important part of grid-connected PV generation system. The fault carrying capacity of the
transformer should be taken into account at all times. The fault types include: system short-circuit, grounding
fault, voltage drop, and etc...
23. Ambient temperature, relative humidity, altitude, air quality, and the relevant indexes should be taken into
account at all times.
24. The country-specific power grid frequency should be taken into account at all times.
25. The country-specific standards and directives should be taken into account at all times.
