DESIGN PROJECT 1 CONTENT

This is the outline of essential content that is required for Design Project 1 report. Any additional
relevant information may be included where necessary.

Chapter 1 Process Background

Topic Content
Process Selection/Method Used • Consideration of major factors such as
selectivity, general cost, complexity of the
process route and safety issues in the process
selection.
• A few process options are compared using a
basis.
• The screening process is clearly summarized
using table or graph.
Process Flow Diagram (PFD) • The PFD is complete including all streams (input
and output), major equipment and labels.
• The PFD is created based on their own ideas.

• Chemical kinetics, formula and the
thermodynamics for the reactions involved are
presented.

• Product demand and supply in Asia and around
the world.

Break Even Analysis • Proper analysis that includes variable cost and
product price are presented.
• Relevant graph with justification on production
rate.
• State limitations in the breakeven analysis.
Conclusion • Effective deduction with strong justification.

Chapter 2 Site Location

Topic Content
Site Location Data • At least three criteria of the selected location
are considered and discussed.
• Information to illustrate the location, the GPS
coordinate, the road map.
Criteria of the Site Selection • Provide >7 elements required for the selection.
• Description of the facilities nearby the selected
location.
• Compare several suitable locations to build the
plant (in Malaysia and/or overseas)

Chapter 3 Mass Balance

in the calculations.
Basis of Calculation • The calculation basis is stated clearly.
• Reaction is stoichiometrically balance and
follows correct format.
• Appropriate scale up with relevant detailed
calculations.
