ANGLE OF ELEVATION
Problem: A building is 48 feet high. At a distance away from the building, a man
notices that the angle of elevation at the top of the building is 43º. How far is the
man from the base of the building?

Illustration: Solution:
𝑜
tan 𝜃 =
𝑎
tan 43˚ 48
=
1 𝑎
ሺaሻ tan 43˚ 48
=
𝑡𝑎𝑛43˚ 𝑡𝑎𝑛43˚
a = 51. 47 ft

Conclusion: Therefore, the distance of the man to the base of the building is
51.47 ft

ANGLE OF DEPRESSION
Problem: The angle of depression of an aircraft carrier from an approaching
airplane is 50˚. If the plane is 600 feet above the level of the deck of the carrier,
how far away is the carrier from the airplane?

Illustration: Solution:
𝑜
sin 𝜃 =

𝑠𝑖𝑛50˚ 600
=
1 ℎ
ሺℎሻ𝑠𝑖𝑛50˚ 600
=
𝑠𝑖𝑛50˚ 𝑠𝑖𝑛50˚
h = 783. 24 feet

Conclusion: Therefore, the distance of the carrier to the approaching

airplane is 783. 24 feet.

OBLIQUE TRIANGLE
Problem: Jennie’s house is 13m away from Lisa’s house and Lisa’s house is 9m
away from the mall. Find the distance of Jennie’s house to the mall. Refer to the
given angle in the illustration below.

Illustration: Solution:
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝐴 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝐵
=
𝑎 𝑏
𝑠𝑖𝑛127˚ 𝑆𝑖𝑛35˚
=
𝑎 13

𝑠𝑖𝑛35˚ 𝑠𝑖𝑛35˚
a = 18.10 meter

Conclusion: Therefore, the distance of Jennie’s house to the mall is 18.10m.
