Country Profile: Philippines

1. Geography

The country of the Philippines is located in Southeast Asia and is an archipelago, or a

stretch of water that has many islands. The Philippines capital is Manila, and the average climate

for the Philippines is ​79.9 °F​ up to ​82.9 °F. The Philippines also has many different landforms

like caves, mountains, and rivers. The Philippines has a mixed economic system which includes

a variety of private freedom. The daily life in the Philippines is a unique blend of diversity.

2. Politics

Some unique political features of the Philippines are they have a democratic republic

government similar to the United States, the power is equally divided among 3 branches:

executive, legislative, and judicial. The philippines president is Rodrigo Duterte. ​Duterte was

born on March 28, 1945 in Maasin, Southern Leyte, Philippines. Some historical events that have

happened in the Philippines are that from 1571-1898, the Philippines was controlled by Spanish

rule (​“Obo.”)​. On June 12, 1898, without the knowledge of the Filipinos, Spain surrendered the

Philippines (along with Puerto Rico and Guam) to the United States in exchange of $20 million

under the Treaty of Paris. The Philippines were under the control of the United States until they

gained their independence on July 4, 1946 (​“Philippine Independence Declared”)​.

3. Economy

The GDP of the philippines was last counted ​313.6 billion USD (2017). Primary exports

include semiconductors and electronic products, transport equipment, garments, copper products,

petroleum products, coconut oil, and fruits. And their major trading partners include Japan,

China, the United States, Singapore, South Korea, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Germany,

Taiwan and Thailand. The Philippines has a mixed economic system which includes a variety of

private freedom, combined with centralized economic planning and government regulation.

4. Daily Life

Some unique features of the daily life of people in the Philippines are that most people

don't drive because everything is in walking distance and when they do need to go somewhere

not in walking distance they ride a tricycle and it's not like the ones little kids use it is like a

pedicab. ​The Philippines is commonly referred to as a melting pot of western and eastern

cultures. The population of the Philippines that was last counted is 104.9 million in (2017). The

life expectancy for the Philippines is 69.09 years. The global literacy rate for all people aged 15

and above is 86.3%. The global literacy rate for all males is 90.0% and the rate for all females is

82.7%.
