My Classroom

• Physical Education
• Grades 9-12
• Class sizes range from 20-30
• Gymnasium, outdoor, & health classroom environment
Overall Philosophy

• Giving students the opportunity to have choice and freedom

within the classroom
• Giving students a sense of ownership and responsibility with
classroom rules and activities
• Students feel equal responsibility in the classroom as teacher
• Students take ownership over their own learning
Greeting

• Introducing myself as well as students introducing themselves

• Everyone says their names and a few things about themselves
• Every student says why they are taking this class and what they
want to get out of this class
Behaviour

• There is a high expectation of student behaviour in the classroom

• Classroom behaviour and expectations are set at the beginning of
school year and will be discussed in the first class
• Rules and regulations remain constant in both classroom
environments

leave. Some topics in health are sensitive to other individuals.
• Teacher will gather attention from their voice, students should stop
chatter as soon as the teacher demands attention.
Outdoor Class Standards

• Hats are permitted
• Teacher will mark the boundaries of outdoor activities prior to
each class

breaks (besides emergencies) must be done before class
• If water bottles aren’t possible plastic ones will be provided
Bathroom & Water Breaks

• Water bottles are encouraged during class

• Drinking fountain located within the gymnasium and students can
go freely at any time
• Bathroom breaks are granted freely however no more than 2
students may be gone at a time. There will be “bathroom keys”
without a key students may not go. This will enforce the only two
individuals at a time. Student has an emergency they may go.
• Students must only be gone for 5 minutes until they are
considered to have “left class”
Whistle Rules

• 1 whistle mean stop and listen for instruction

• 2 whistles mean stop and gather around the teacher for further
instruction
• 3 whistles mean line up on the baseline of the gymnasium.
Overall Classroom Respect

• Classmates must show respect for others and their abilities in this
classroom
• Encouraging others and helping others is encouraged
• Bullying and failure to positively impact classmates is unacceptable
• Students are asked to participate to their best abilities
• Students will receive an easy check mark every class for full
participation and will lose check marks for lack of participation or not
coming to class
• This will account for 10-15% of their entire grade (based on school
policy)
Groupwork

• Collaboration with others is a large part of physical education

• Each group project will follow with a short report on each member
of the group and how they participated in group activities
• If answers of this report are negative, group meeting with teacher
will take place
• Any disrespect and non-inclusion of others is unacceptable
• Plagiarism of any kind is a mark of 0 for the entire group
Three Strike Policy

• This policy is to enforce the rules in the classroom

• Each student will be given a three strike grace
• If a student fails to follow a rule they receive a strike
• Upon the third strike, the student must write a one page paper on what rules they broke and how they are going to strive
to improve for the rest of the semester. If the student does not complete this, they will do it during class time while the
rest of class is doing activities
• This will effect their participation mark throughout this time
• The paper can be written or typed, and does not have to follow a specific format
• The paper will be not marked but for completion
• Student strikes will start over once paper is completed
• Some bigger more serious rules that involve student safety, or breaking overall school rules will be awarded 2 strikes
• Students may appeal strikes with a paragraph to explain their mistake.
• Al appeals must be in writing, or appeal does not count
Cognitive Practices

• Hard work is expected and high quality of work is expected

• Assignments must be completed on assigned due dates or student
will receive 10% deduction a day.
• Creativity in assignment presentation and format will be rewarded
• Students whom go the extra mile and produce more than what the
assignment was asking will be rewarded
• Students are encouraged to participate in classroom discussions
• Teacher will not lead discussions for students, therefore students
must take ownership over classroom topics
Essential Skills

• Hard work • TIPS

• Creativity • Set goals
• Inclusiveness • Try hard
• Organization • Ask questions
• Maturity • Ask for help
• Teamwork • Work with you classmates
• Communication • Think outside the box
Problems & Concerns

• Classroom rules can be discussed and changed as semester goes on

• These are classroom rules however, and not rules that apply to
school policy
• There will be a suggestion or concern box where students may
drop notes in at any time outside the gymnasium. These notes may
have names on them or no names on them. This box will be taken
away if inappropriate comments arise
• If students need extra help or to chat with the teacher, the
teacher will make themselves available for a meeting with
students about academic concerns
Physical Education Stereotype

• You do not need to be highly skilled or an expert at physical activity to

succeed in this class
• Work ethic and participation weigh more than talent or athletic skill
• If you have higher athletic skills, use these to help classmates
• Physical education is for everyone and everyone has an equal chance to
succeed
• High marks will be only given to students who show high work ethic and
demonstrate they are a positive member of this classroom
• Furthermore, students need to complete and work hard on all written
assignments
Routines

• Warm up/ Cool down

• Seating
• Attendance sign in
• Assignment hand in
• Emergency procedures
• Fire drill
• Lock down
• Frist aid
• Safety

• Once students are changed, the teacher will ask this student to
begin the warm up
• The same process will happen following a class activity
Seating

• There is no set seating plan in health class

• Students may sit where they would like in class
• However, since students are allowed this responsibility if they
abuse it, a seating plan will be created
• This will be based on students working well beside other students
and the level of noise during instruction
Attendance Sign In

• At the beginning of each class, students will sign their name on a

classroom list to indicate that they are here for each class
• Students must only sign the paper if they are there for the entire
class
• Students may not sign in another student
• Students may sign in before or after they are changed but must
sign in before they begin activities
Assignment Hand In

courselink site on due date.

in must be handed in a week before said due date
Emergency Procedures

• Students will be aware of what door and where do go during a fire

drill

a lockdown in an outdoor class, heath class, and gym class
• Students will be made aware about all first aid kits and medical
equipment around classroom spaces
Safety

• Students must wear and follow all safety guidelines for all
activities
• Failure to do this will result in the student being forced to stop
participating in said activity
• Students must be aware of personal safety and safety of others
during classroom activities
• All allergies and special medical conditions must be reported to
the teacher ASAP
Activities
