SHIPYARD PROJECT MANAGERS

Based on the current conditions of the ship repair
market, it has increasingly become necessary to
manage shipyard projects effectively. In order to
stay competitive and relevant in such tight market,
the use of project management standards is
imperative. Shipyards need to train their personnel
on how to properly use and control resources in a
certain time frame and within budget to effectively
achieve the company objectives.
This course / workshop provides to Project
Managers and personnel in the Shiprepair Industry
with tools for planning, controlling and closing
projects, while using recognized project
management standards mastered and applied by
the Instructor for several years specifically in
shiprepair projects.

COURSE METHODOLOGY
The course / workshop methodology is based on
“experiential learning”, where every student can
learn and understand the key concepts stated on
the book Shipyard Project Management and apply
them on the real-world ship repair project –QUEEN
ANDREA.

Upon completion, the course participant will

understand the key concepts of standard project
management tools and will have the ability to
successfully apply them on ship repair projects.

Module 0. Project Management Standards and
overview - (1 hour)
Definition of Project Management. Project
Management Standards, Knowledge Areas and
Process groups. Project Management in the
Shipyard Industry overview.
Module 1. Stakeholders Management in Ship
Repair Projects – (2 hours):
What is Stakeholder Management? Identify and
analyze ship-repair stakeholders. Manage ship
repair stakeholder’s engagement. Identify and
analyze stakeholders for project QUEEN ANDREA.
Module 2. WBS for Ship Repair Projects – (4 hours)
What is a WBS? Components of a WBS.
Requirement list. Steps to create a WBS for a ship
repair project. WBS top 4 Benefits. WBS Manual
exercise. Create a WBS for project QUEEN ANDREA
using a WBS software.
Module 3. Critical Path / MS Project for Ship
Repair Projects – (4 to 5 hours)
Basic concepts for project scheduling. What is
critical path and how to use it in Ship Repair
Projects? Critical path Top 5 benefits. Aspects on
which the Ship Repair Project Manager should
focus in project scheduling. Critical Path Exercise.
Steps to create a project schedule in MS Project.
How to monitor the schedule in MS Project. Create
the project schedule for project QUEEN ANDREA
using MS Project.
Note: Resource management in MS Project is not
part of this course.
Module 4. Time and Cost Control with EVM Ship
Repair Projects – (4 to 5 hours)
What is EVM? EVM formulas (Variance, KPIs and

Forecast). How to use EVM in Ship Repair Projects
to control cost and time. Relationship between the
WBS, Project Schedule (Ms Project) and EVM. Use
of EVM calculations and reports for the project
QUEEN ANDREA.
Module 5. Risk Management in Ship Repair
Projects – (4 hours)
What is Risk Management? Steps for risk
management in ship repair projects. Understanding
the Risk Register and Risk Assessment Matrix for
Ship Repair Projects. Apply Risk Management to

Module 6. Lessons Learned for ship repair projects
– (2 hours)

MS Project and EVM - (3 to 4 hours)

Management Manager in the ship repair industry.

 All student should have a personal laptop.
 MS project software is needed – a 30d free trial
can be installed from Microsoft website.
