Hot Water Circulating

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

Why do we need Circulating Pumps?
There are many installations where there is a
reasonable distance from the hot water cylinder to
the furthest hot water tap.

Disadvantages to the Home Owner:

• If this is a ‘dead leg’ the water in the pipe will cool
down
• When you turn the tap on you will draw off cold or
tepid water until the hot water arrives at the tap-
this wastes water
• The water in the pipe when you turn the tap off
will cool down, wasting the energy that was used
to heat it in the first place.
Why do we need Circulating Pumps? Continued
Environmental Disadvantages:
• Clean drinking water is wasted
• Cost of treating clean water that is being discharged into the drain and
sewage system

To avoid wasting water and energy we can install a return loop hot water
system that will solve both of these issues and provide your customer with a
more comfortable system.
Design and Construction
The design and construction is different from standard pumps, which affects
the installation and operation
• Designed as ‘wet runner’ pumps, the motor rotor operates in the water
(construction shown on the next slide)
• A standard motor will have a fan on it to provide cooling which generates
noise
• In the case of the wet runner, the water flowing around the can provides
the cooling for the motor

Important differences

• Motor windings and the motor rotor are separated by a can

• Allows the water being pumped to circulate around the rotor (as shown
on the picture to the left on the next slide)
Design and Construction
• Shaft seals can be a point of water leakage, by not having this
issue, the wet runners are ideal for use inside a house
• The pump and motor shaft are one piece meaning the impeller
and motor rotor share the same shaft
• The shaft bearings are journal bearings and are lubricated by the
water circulating around the motor can

In Built Thermostat

• Some HWC pumps are fitted with an adjustable

thermostat that is sensing the water temperature
at the pump
• If this cools below the set point, the pump will
start up and hot water will flow through the
system until the temperature is back up to the
thermostat setting
• This way the pump will only run when it is
required
Timer Control
• In most domestic installations there is little or no need for hot water
draw off during the period when most people are asleep
• The pump can be switched off with either an in built time clock or by
fitting one if the pump doesn’t have this function available

In Built 24 hour Timer

AUTOADAPT
The AUTOADAPT function will continuously search for the lowest
possible head to meet system requirements and find the setting
that provides
optimal comfort with minimal energy consumption. The
AUTOADAPT function learns, stores and adapts operation time to
the consumption pattern.
Quiet Operation
The main advantage of this style of pump is that in normal operation it will
not generate any noise.
• Ideal for installation inside a house where you do not want any noise from
the pump
• UPS are less noisy than the fridge in your kitchen!
