ALPHABET TUTORIAL

Here are some links to tools and resources that will help you learn the Russian Cyrillic Alphabet.

First, click on the link below and familiarize yourself with the Russian Cyrillic Alphabet using the web
tutorial on the site. Notice which letters are the same as in the Latin alphabet. Which ones are different?
Which look like familiar letters in the Latin alphabet but have a different sound in Russian? Practice by
working through the the three sections and the quizzes provided on the site.

Now that you are familiar with the Cyrillic Alphabet, practice writing the letters in cursive (the way all
Russians do). Click on the link below and scroll about halfway down the page to “Learning Objects for
Writing – Writing Alphabet in Cursive.” Download the PDF file provided and follow the writing tutorial.
Next, print the accompanying practice sheets and start writing by copying the letters and words on the
line next to them. Once you have completed your writing sheet, scan it, and upload the scan to the
assignment dropbox in Blackboard (in the folder where you obtained these instructions).

Once you have learned how to write the letters of the alphabet, you are ready to practice pronunciation
and reading. The link below will take you to a page where you can listen to the sound corresponding to
each letter, as well as words made up of those sounds. Listen to each and repeat the sound. You don’t
need to be concerned with the meanings of the words at this point; work on recognizing and repeating
the sounds.
