EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

1. Fix the holder for the combustion crucible 2 to the base 1 using two screws.
2. Fix the small spring clip to the metal rod and attach the holder assembled in this manner
4 to the base using a screw.
3. The holder for the wash bottle 7 is assembled by inserting the long screw through the
plastic clip, sliding the gray plastic sleeve over the thread of the screw and attaching this
assembly to the base using a nut. Assemble the second holder in the same way.
4. Now place the wash bottle 6 in the holder and secure it with one rubber ring each.
Connect the glass connector 5 to the wash bottle: first slide the plastic screw cap of the
GL-18 screw connection over the glass connection fitting of the wash bottle with the
long glass tube, place the silicone gasket on the glass connection fitting and press it into
the screw cap.
5. You can now screw on the glass connector. Mount the funnel with the angle tube 3 in
the metal clip and attach the GL-18 screw connection as described for the wash bottle.
6. By moving the wash bottle up and down, you can equalize the height of the two glass
components so that the glass connector can be screwed in between them.
7. One after another, place the CPS-modules gas collector, gas washer, Woulff’s bottle with
manometer and CPS-hose fastener in the top level of the panel frame C 100 (In this
experiment setup the wash bottle of the gas collector must be connected as a safety
bottle!)
8. Connect the modules air-tight using GL-18 screw connections of the two glass
connectors. For this purpose, slide the plastic screw caps over the glass connection
fittings of the wash bottles, and then slide on the silicone gaskets and press them into
the plastic screw cap.
9. The glass connector can now be screwed to the screw caps and connected with the next
module. Slide the vacuum tubing onto the outlet tube of the Woulff’s bottle (long angle
tube) and secure it in the hose fastener.
10. In this experiment, the Woulff’s bottle with manometer serves as a safety bottle. Set up
the water jet pump on the water supply line and connect it to the vacuum tubing.
11. Place a porcelain crucible filled with 1 g sublimated sulfur which has been ignited
beneath the funnel of the CPS-gas collector.
12. When the water jet pump is switched on, the resulting sulfur dioxide is drawn through
the following gas wash bottles. Adjust the suction of the water jet pump so that the gas
generated flows continuously through the apparatus.
13. The first gas wash bottle of the gas collector is connected as a safety bottle, just like the
Woulff’s bottle with manometer. Do not fill any liquid into the first gas wash bottle.
14. To demonstrate that acid gas is generated, attach a strip of moistened pH-indicator
paper inside the first wash bottle.

15. Fill the second wash bottle of the CPS-module gas washer with an aqueous suspension
of 1 g calcium oxide in 100 ml distilled water, to which a few drops of the universal
indicator has been added.
16. In the third wash bottle of the CPS-module gas washer, add 100 ml distilled water and
a few drops of the universal indicator as well. Fill in all open spaces in the panel frame
using blank panels.
17. Extinguish the flame of burning sulfur and switch off the water jet as soon as there is
color change in the wash bottle.

Results and Discussion

1. What is the acid gas produced from the crucible?
2. Tabulate the observation for wash bottle 1, 2 and 3.
3. Propose relevant chemical equations that describe the observations in bottle 1, 2 and
3.
4. What is the observation if we switch on the water jet after the flame extinguished? What
is the component formed under this step? Propose a method to treat/dispose/
monetize this component.
5. Can we scale up this process to industrial scale? What is the major design factor that
required to be considered? Elaborate the required modification and auxiliary
equipment to support the industrial desulphurization using the method. You may
support your explanation with schematic or Process flow diagram (PFD).
6. Propose an alternative method to remove this type of acid gas under industrial scale.
Elaborate on the required set-up and process involved. You may support your
explanation with schematic or Process flow diagram (PFD).
