AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF STEEL CONSTRUCTIONREFACE TO THE Fl DITION
The introduction of a new design Code inevitably brings with it some difficulty for practising engineers
who have to learn of new or revised code rules and their application in the design phase.
In AS 4100, Australia has a Limit States Code for Steel Structures which introduces not only the
dramatic change of philosophy embodied in Limit States format but also a significant technical
‘updating reflecting research and testing of steel structures in the past two decades
To facilitate the transition from the working stress code AS 1250 to the new Limit State code AS
4100, AISC now presents this manual of Worked Examples to AS 4100 to assist designers in coming
to grips with the new Code as easily and quickly as possible.
We believe that the contents of this manual, written by prominent members of the Standards Australia
committee which prepared AS 4100, will be invaluable in achieving a swift, painless transition from
Working Stress to Limit States design method. The manual will also provide a useful teaching aid in
Universities and Colleges in training the structural designers of tomorrow.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
‘The success of the First Edition of Worked Examples to AS4100 has prompted the Authors and AISC
to present this Second Edition which contains the original content and much additional material.
Significant in the added material is a new section dealing with Checking a Portal Frame Rafter in
response to demand from the structural design fraternity,
‘A completely new chapter on Connectors is also included in this edition to assist in the design of bolt
and weld groups to AS4100.
AISC is confident that this new edition of Worked Examples to AS4100 will assist designers in the
transition to limit states design and also provide teachers with significant tool in the teaching of
steel structures.
