Blog #1

Vaping is an ongoing choice of hobby that is growing popular among adolescents. It is

seen as a safer, or better alternative to smoking cigarettes, when it comes to health, however

most vapers seem not to know the risks that vaping may pose itself. For example there are

studies that suggest there are long term health problems especially to the lungs because of

vaping. It is important to know that with vape, there is nicotine involved still, therefore it should

not really be surprising to see that there is a potential danger to the people who choose to vape.

Especially for younger people whose lungs may still be developing depending on the actual age

and maturation may vary depending on who it actually is. In my capstone there is much learning

about how vaping and vapor affects the mind of youth. Lung effects are starting to be known as a

potential and a likely link to vaping.

As for the process of completing such a task, it requires doing multiple steps,

meticulously as well. To start there is no better way to do so than to learn the needed and

necessary information that I would presenting to the people that I would be interviewing. After I

researched that information I then would have to know ahead of time the people who I am

interviewing. Finding the actual vapers was quite easy, but posing a slight amount of difficulty

was finding those willing to be interviewed, some did and some consented but not to recorded

interview. It was disappointing to have to resort to typing out the written out interviews because

ideally it would all be recorded, but my partner and I were grateful to at least be given the time to

interview the vapers on their opinions and answers. Editing and arranging was also part of the

process, because it was not in our interest to reveal the identity of those who were gracious

enough to allow us to interview them, therefore this was a necessary step in order to conceal

identity. Of course, the physically written interviews had to be typed out in order to be more

presentable and professional looking. Overall the steps were learning processes in themselves,

we learned about the mindset of a vaper especially.

There was a lot to learn from the capstone that I chose to do, on one hand people who

choose to vape are complex individuals as are anyone else, but on the other hand it is important

to inform these individuals of what risks they pose to themselves. Some people were quite

knowledgeable, whereas others appeared to just know the base amount of knowledge. Also,

interesting was the interview my partner and I decided to do with a teacher, which was Mr. Del

Campo, although unfortunately we accidently recorded that one in slow-motion. It was a great

interview, and what was telling from that is that it isn’t just students that are affected by the

problem of widespread vaping, teachers, parents, school officials, etc. are all affected in some

way or another. There isn’t necessarily a sure-fire “solution” to vaping spikes in adolescents, but

there can be ways in order to reduce or slow down the growth at which adolescents vape. Some

of the problems stem from the basics of vaping products themselves, they are more difficult to

track than a lot of other drugs that high schoolers in particular would turn to in the past. Not to

mention how vape is advertised towards young people especially, because it is way easier to

hook young individuals than to hook adults who have more formed opinions on a lot of things.

Getting rid of vapes would likely affect in a positive way the health of people who vape in both

the short-term and the long-term, although that is a lofty and an unreasonable goal to shoot for in

the short-term, maybe in the long-term it is possible, but certainly not easy. I learned a lot about

more than just vaping and those who choose that path through my capstone, I learned about

people, how we can be manipulated, about how we can cling to what we like and ignore the

truth, how we pressure each other to do things, even when it is not the smart decision, so I am

grateful that I decided to choose the capstone that I did.
