1. What purpose does a WBS serve?
The WBS, explained as the stepwise breakdown of the processes and tasks from one start point to
one final point, which as a whole covers the complete process. The WBS is known to be the most
used tool while managing the project. The WBS serves following purposes-
Convenient breakdown of tasks- The WBS divides the complex activities or processes into
smaller and measurable tasks. This makes the project manager’s work easier since the WBS
provides a more convenient and effective vision over the difficult tasks.
Cost and finance management- Since, WBS breaks the whole activity process into number of
tasks, the budget distribution becomes smooth and easy to manage. With the help of WBS
the different task can be assigned specific costs separately.
Schedule management- WBS tasks has specifically defined constraints, boundaries and
requirements. Hence, it becomes easier to track the process progress. The project manager
can determine how much the project has progressed by checking which tasks have been
completed or delayed.
Scope clarification- The WBS helps in obtaining one of the most important aspect in project
management i.e. identification of scope of the project. The WBS assists in listing all the
necessary tasks or activities to be done individually which giver the clear indication of what
work needs to be done without the addition of extra non-value added activities.
