We made a tray battery with an ice tray acid and leads.

There are multiple pools of acid with

lead and copper leads. When it’s completed and the circuit is completed the electrons flow from
the zinc to the copper and to the acid and the in repeats along the circuit

The modifications that we made were that we started with the copper just wrapped around the
nail once but as we moved forward we started wrapping the copper 3 or 4 times around to
increase the conductivity. We also experimented with different acids to see which worked the
best. We did this because we were trying to find the best combination of acids and leads

Chemical energy: Chemical energy is the potential of a chemical substance to undergo a

transformation through a chemical reaction to transform other chemical substances. Examples
include batteries, food, gasoline, and etc.

Electrical Energy: Electrical energy is energy derived from electric potential energy or kinetic
energy. When used loosely, "electrical energy" refers to energy that has been converted from
electric potential energy.

Our energy outputs differed from the use of different acids and depending on how used or
corroded the leads were from previous use.
Type of acid Voltage output with new Voltage with corroded
leads leads

Vinegar (5% acetic acid) 5.46v 4.82v

Acetic acid 1.0M 6.45v 3.83v

Oxalic acid 1.0M 4.99v 2.40v

Hydrochloric acid 1.0M 2.32v 2.31v

Hypothesis: We thought that the stronger the acid the more energy it would produce
In reality the stronger the acid the more time it spent reacting with the metal instead of creating
energy in the battery
We noticed that the stronger the acid the less volts the battery gave off. I think this is because
more of the acid was going to dissolving the zinc in the nails instead of creating energy with the
battery. Acetic acid was the best for this battery because it was a good inbetween between
vinegar and the stronger acids.

The equation for a cell of our battery would be: 0.337+(-0.763)= 1.1 and since we had 8 cells in
our battery we should have 8.8v in energy but since that is theoretical it is higher than what we
actually got.

The main selling points of our design is that it is easy to store, don’t take up much room, and
you can have as many of them hooked up in a system as you want to get more voltage. The
only problem is that you have to replace the leads once in a while because they start to corrode
and don’t work as well
