While some bridal gown silhouettes never go out of style,

every Fashion Week offers new takes on tradition. The 2019
Fall Winter season was no exception; from glittery finishes
to modern necklines, there are plenty of fresh looks for
soon-to-be brides to draw inspiration from. Here are nine
of the latest trends to consider when shopping for your
wedding dress.

1. Illusion Necklines
Mock necklines with sheer panels are the perfect com-
promise between modest and modern. Viktor & Rolf’s new
bridal line, Mariage, for instance features an organza ruffle
gown (shown above) with a sweetheart neckline overlaid
with a sheer button-down jacket.

2. Separate Styles
For brides who want to show a bit of skin, separates with
a crop top and skirt are a super trendy, yet classy way to
bare it. Cushnie’s latest collection includes a gown that pairs
a boatneck top with a body hugging skirt, while Willowby
by Watters has a gown featuring romantic flower appliques
on a corset style top and matching sheer organza skirt.

3. Halter Tops
The new Duchess of Sussex can also be credited with the
rise of the halter-top gown. In addition to her Givenchy
dress, Meghan Markle sported a second look on her wed-

but all are perfect for a bride who wants to make a state-
ment.

9. Higher Hemlines

past, wedding cakes were pure white, simple and elegant,
but wedding cakes have come a long way baby. Today,
while couples are becoming more daring in wedding cake
design, decoration and flavor, others have done away
with all that pretty decor and just want to serve some-
thing a lot simpler – and even a little naked. Here are
some of this year’s wedding cake trends:

Typically, wedding cakes are lavishly adorned with

for – dresses, tuxes, the band, photographer, cake and, of
course, the flowers. There are bouquets for the wedding
party, corsages and boutineers to consider. You need to
stay on budget – no matter what it is – so it’s important
to work with your local florist to get the flowers you
want at a price you can afford. Here are some tips:
1. Avoid certain holidays.
First, while it might sound romantic to get married
around Valentine’s Day and fill your wedding with

in Des Plaines, Illinois. “A florist is going to charge you
three times the regular price for roses around that time.”
2. Stay seasonal.
Whenever you are getting married, talk to the florist
about flowers that are seasonal to that month, or you’ll
be paying more for out-of-season flowers. “For example,
lilies are in season in June,” says Bonk. “You can also
choose year-round flowers like tulips.”

3. Think greenery.
Flowers are traditional for weddings, but if
you’re looking to save money and incorporate
the outdoors, consider greenery. This is a great
idea for winter brides too. “December is the
perfect time of the year to include ferns,” says
Bonk. “You normally associate ferns with your
wreath on your mantle, but they can be abso-
lutely beautiful paired with just a few roses.”

4. A rose is a rose, but …

Roses are year-round, but can break a bud-
get if you need to get dozens of them. Instead,
consider other, more affordable floral options.
Bonk recommends the lisianthus, a rose-like
flower. “They’re very, very pretty flowers and
they come multiples on a stem, so they’re a great
substitute for roses,” she says. “Many people
will think they are roses, except they have a yel-
low center.”

5. Say bye to bouquets.

The bride needs a bouquet, the bridesmaids
need bouquets and the flower girl may need one
too. That’s a lot of flowers, but to save money,
Bonk suggests that brides consider single flowers.
“Single flowers, such as a ranunculus, are pretty
and look like a peony except they are smaller and
more budget friendly,” she says. “You can also do
your favorite flower as a single stem or two-flow-
er centerpiece to save a lot of money.”

6. One flower fits all.

Couples traditionally order flowers for the
church or wherever the wedding ceremony is
going to take place and then more flowers for
the reception. “Tell the florist you want to use
the flowers from the wedding ceremony as part
of your reception décor, so somebody could just
be in charge of transporting them to the recep-
tion.”
Bonk says that to stay on budget, you re-

wise, they sell this big beautiful dream wedding
vision to you and later you find out it’s $7,000,”
she says. “Instead say ‘This is my budget and the
flowers I want, what can you do for me?”

1. Shop In-Season and Local
The best way to prevent droopy flowers is to pick
varieties that are in season for your wedding locale and
date. In Miami, Fla., for instance, florist Kathryn Parrish
advises her brides at Parrish Designs to stick to flowers
accustomed to the hot Southern climate. “We tend to
move towards orchids and tropical flowers that will hold
up better in transportation in the warmer months,” she
says.
Plus, local and seasonal blooms are actually more
cost effective, so you’ll get more beauty and blooms for
your buck. “The key is to make sure you are requesting
seasonal product. We might be able to get a few peonies
in August, but they are so expensive and extremely small
compared to May that it is not worth it,” explains Jinger
Leonard, owner and lead designer of The Flower House
in Livermore, Calif.
2. Avoid Delicate Varieties
While your florist will be able to advise you regarding
floral choices for your specific needs, it’s best to avoid
fragile flowers.
“Hydrangea and cafe au lait dahlias are very heat
sensitive. Placing those in direct sunlight will shorten

such as roses, tea roses, pods and tougher blooms to hold

Other blooms that are perfect for the warmer weather

3. Consider Non-Blooms
If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, you can avoid
the wilting flower issue altogether by using alternative
decorations. Paper flowers, succulents, lanterns, vines,
branches and candles, for instance, are all beautiful
options that aren’t affected by the sun.
4. Give Your Flowers Extra TLC
While nothing can completely prevent your flowers
from being impacted by the weather, there are a few
preventivze steps you can take.
“Always try to keep flowers in shade until last minute.
If you are taking pictures before your wedding outside,
consider having a second bouquet made as a backup, if
first gets too hot during this time,” says Parrish. “Also
have centerpieces created where the flowers are in direct
water versus using floral foam.”

After the flurry of excitement and congratulations

sets in. For even the most enthusiastic couples, it can be
a daunting odyssey - but fortunately, it does not have
to be. A bit of organization and planning ahead help
tremendously, and, when it comes to rentals, having a
game plan for the things you need, whether it’s a tuxedo,
table or event space, will make all the difference between
frantic and fabulous wedding prep.
1. First, determine what you’re
buying and what you’re renting.
You’ll never make a many lists as when you’re planning
a wedding day. From dance floor songs to perfect venues,
list-enthusiasts will truly get their fill. One list that can
help couples stay organized early in the process is a “buy
or rent” list. Jot down everything that you are planning
to buy, versus everything you’re planning to rent.
Some commonly rented items include:
• Tables
• Flatware and dishes
• Lights
• Tents
• Photo booths
• Musical equipment
• Bar
• Any outdoor heating/cooling items such as fire pits,
heat lamps, etc.
2. Figure out a ballpark budget.
Once everything has been divided into its designated
column, it’s time to figure out a rough rental budget.
You might even want to start researching ballpark prices
for certain items, just to have an idea of what everything
costs. (In the next step, you’ll research vendors, but it’s
good to have a rough idea of cost first.) Don’t limit cost
research to the internet either; ask other recently wed
couples what they spent on rental items. Referrals from
people you trust are a fantastic way to get started.

We’ve all heard horror stories of flower girls throw-
ing tantrums rather than petals or ring bearers having
an accident in their suits. So, if you’re thinking about
including children in your upcoming ceremony, here are
a few no-nonsense tips for avoiding pint-sized problems
on the big day.
Are Kids Required?
First, you and your fiancé should ask yourselves if you
want to involve children in your ceremony. Even though
some religious ceremonies or traditions call for kids,
ultimately, it’s your wedding and your call.
“Think about the overall flow and intention you have
for the ceremony. What do you want to experience and

feel?” advises Krissy Campbell, owner of Simply Be So
Events in South Bend, Ind. “If it’s important that you in-
volve certain family members, then you may lean toward
involving kids. But, if you want the ceremony to have a
more formal or intimate feel without a huge bridal party,
not involving kids is perfectly fine, too!”
What is the Best Age?
Ideally, Campbell advises choosing children who are
around 4-7 years old to participate in the ceremony.
Infants and toddlers tend to be more unpredictable and
can be easily overwhelmed by the crowd.
“Although most can’t help this, if you have an option,
I would recommend sticking in this age group, as it is
less stressful for parents and others,” she says.
Talk to Kids About
Their Responsibilities
If you decide to include children in your ceremony,
you should talk to them about their responsibilities
before the big day.
“It’s so important to make some time to help the
kids and their parents realize the importance of their
role in a way that makes them feel excited about get-
ting to walk down the aisle and be selected by the
bride and groom,” Campbell says.
It is also helpful to have a point person for all the
kids. This could be a parent, member of the bridal
party or wedding planner – just someone who they
can trust and look to for help during the ceremony.

Rather than having each child walk alone, Campbell
recommends allowing kids proceed in pairs or a small

ways fun because they feed off each other and help the

How to book the right
vendors for your wedding

Researching local vendors for your wedding is time
consuming, but totally worth it. If you haven’t done
your research, it can be hard to know what specifics
you should be asking during a conversation.
But first things first — when you decide you’re
interested in a vendor, send a quick email inquiry to
make sure your date is still available. If it is, ask to
set up a phone consult and request more information
beforehand, like price quotes and previous work.
Before chatting on the phone, try to find out as
much about the vendor as possible, taking notes on
anything you may need clarification about.
It may help to think about that first call with a ven-
dor as an initial phone screen (just think about that
first step you take in job interviews).
This is the time to double check specifics such as the
services they offer, rates and, most importantly in my
opinion, get to know the person!

How to choose the best wedding photographer

Sure, you might re-wear your wed-
ding dress or preserve your flowers,
but often all you have left are the
memories and the images. Choos-
ing a photographer for your wed-
ding isn’t easy, but here’s where you
should start.
First, focus your search on wed-
ding photographers. While this may
sound obvious, shooting weddings
is very different than photograph-
ing studio portraits, architecture or
nature. Next, research different styles
of wedding photography. Popular
styles include: journalistic (focus-
ing on capturing candid moments),
traditional (lots of posed photos)
and artistic (special effects, dramatic
lighting). Most photographers de-
scribe their style on their websites, so
shop around and curate a list of your
favorites.
After you select a style, you’ll need
to set the budget. According to the
Knot’s Real Wedding Survey, couples
spent an average of about $2,630 on
photography in 2017.

 Making dreams come true for Brides

Attention Manistee brides - an experienced
wedding planner now lives in the area and she
recently opened a consignment bridal
boutique downtown. Her goal is to help
brides make their dreams come true on a
budget.
“This is something I take pride in,” said
Tracy Helder, who owns “Love Your Event”
with a Grand Rapids business partner. The
company has helped create celebratory events
throughout Michigan and Indiana. “I always
try to stay way under budget. I do a lot of
shopping. I work with over 300 vendors so I
can find the deals and get it done under
budget. It does make people very happy.”
In addition to her vent planning business,
last May Helder opened Manistee Bridal, a
consignment boutique in Manistee that also
features new and consigned wedding attire.
“Manistee was lacking in formal wear,
prom, wedding and special occasion attire,”
Helder said. “My goal was to bring affordable
and fashionable dresses to the area to help
make every bride’s dream of a special wedding
become a reality, even on a tight budget.”
Hall lets you plan your wedding your way

The Lutke Rental Hall in Manton can
accommodate a variety of events,
including wedding receptions and bridal
showers.
Kim and Jason Lutke purchased the
building in 2014 from the Manton-
Buckley Masonic Lodge. Since then,
they’ve remodeled the kitchen and
painted the building.
The full kitchen features both a freezer
and refrigerator, stove and double oven,
microwave and two large coffee urns.
Couples will have to provide their own
food or contract with a catering company.
The venue has WiFi, a television if
someone wants to play a photo slideshow
during the event, both heat and air
conditioning, men’s and womens

Brides today are mulling different ways to show off their
stones via shapes, stacking and even turning tradition on its
side with east-west settings.
Here’s what you need to know about the hot trends in
rings.
OPEN BANDS
This style — be it in
a twisted infinity design
or straight — provides a
wider look for less mon-

a lower budget and want a more substantial
look, by having some of these pieces that
have this open space, you’re able to achieve
that look,’ Davis says.
“Sometimes though women don’t like to
see the skin showing through the band,”
she says. “But, for women who want a
wider, more romantic look, that works re-
ally well.”
It’s all about the pave settings combining to shine bright
like a bigger diamond.
“You can get a big diamond look for a lot less money,”
says private concierge designer/jeweler The Gemgal, who
runs the I Rock Diamonds website. “Some of the popular-
ity is happening because people don’t want to pay $15,000
to $20,000 or $25,000 for a ring anymore and want to pay
under $5,000 or under $4,000. And you get a lot of look
for a lot less money.”
The pave and micro-pave look though, might mean
replacing stones eventually.
“By style, it’s stunning. But it’s a little higher mainte-
nance design,” says Tanya Waymire, general manager of
the Robbins Brothers, The Engage-
ment Ring Store in Dallas. “It’s not
uncommon to lose a diamond here
or there, so make sure you’re choos-
ing from a collection that’s going to
replace the diamond.”

band can range from large to subtle, the style emphasizes
the most important part of the piece: the rock.
“It helps bring the eye to that center stone that every-
body spends the money on,” Davis says. “A lot of brides
love the negative space that it provides. And it works well
for every shape — in particular, some of the elongated
fancy shapes that are popular right now.”

STACKING
This trend is providing the ultimate in customization —
mixing bands that intentionally don’t match, but comple-
ment the engagement ring.
“Brides like that they can customize their look with each
individual ring, and personalize them. Include stones of a
grandmother’s ring, a birthstone of their significant other,
maybe a particular element that speaks to them is added,”
says Elizabeth Brook, marketing manager at Wedgewood
Weddings, which operates a chain of venues across the U.S.
“There is so much room for creativity and personalization.
Done right, they create a beautiful piece that always bares
attention in a way that no other ring does.”
Stacking rings also are more affordable, she says.
The bands function almost as a ring wardrobe.
“They can mix and match, you can add bands if they
have a special occasion or anniversary,” says Shane Co.’s
Davis. “Or put one of the bands on their second finger or
on a different hand — whatever suits your fancy or what-
ever’s working with the outfit you’re wearing that day.”
The trend isn’t just with young brides, as those in their
second marriages are jumping on board, says Waymire.
But because the bands are thinner — to allow for the
stacking — they might be more prone to damage.
“Because the design is going to be more delicate, we
don’t know how they’re going to hold up long term,” she
says.
Still, Waymire likes the style innovation she’s seeing.
“It’s really exciting to see these brides be bold enough
to take a 70-plus year tradition and turn it on its head and
make up a new rule with it,” she says.

A & C Tent Rental in Cadillac has all the corners covered when it
comes to weddings and other outdoor affairs.
This business offers rental tents in a variety of sizes, as well as chairs
and tables, said owner Michael Griffiths. The company has been in
business for more than 15 years and Griffiths has been owner since
2005.
“Everything is delivered and set up, including the table and chairs,”
Griffiths said. “It’s not just a drop-off service.”
They’ll also take down and remove those items. Tent sizes at A & C
Tent Rental include 20 x 30 square feet, 20 x 40 square feet and 30 x
60 square feet, he said. The larger size can accommodate up to 150
people comfortably and still have room for amenities, he adds. Smaller
tents also can be attached to larger ones if additional room is needed.
A & C Tent Rental also brokers with a downstate tent rental company
to provide tents in larger sizes such as 40 x 100 square feet and 60 x 60
square feet, Griffiths says.
“No matter how large a wedding you have in mind, we can offer any
size tent as well as various types of tables and chairs,” Griffiths said.
A & C Tent Rental serves an area that’s in a 50- to 60-mile radius of
Cadillac and includes Wexford, Missaukee, Lake and Osceola counties.
Griffiths said it is best to reserve your tent, tables and chairs as soon
as you have a date picked out as there are limited resources. He added
he already has events booked for the summer and has been receiving
reservations since the first of the year.
“Even if we have a date already booked, I will try to get what you
need through subcontracting with reliable companies,” he said. “It’s
never too late.”

plan a wedding usually starts to set in. For most, a
professional wedding planner is out of reach, which
means you probably don’t know where to start. Luck-
ily, there are entire events dedicated to helping engaged
couples through the process: wedding shows.
What to Expect
Typically, a wedding show features numerous ven-
dors displaying their products and services at a large
exhibition hall or wedding venue. It’s everything you
could possible need to host a wedding – caterers, bak-

“The biggest advantage to attending a wedding fair is
that you get to meet face-to-face with wedding profes-

it all comes down to meeting a vendor that they work

execute an event that reflects the couple’s personality.”

How to Prepare
While the number of choices is convenient in terms
of saving time, it can also be overwhelming for inexpe-
rienced attendees. Here are a few expert tips so you can
approach your first show like a pro and avoid unneces-
sary mistakes.
1. Create a separate email address.
Most vendors will have places for you to sign up for
giveaways, discounts, quotes or just more information.
Instead of inundating your main inbox with wedding-
related spam, Paelmo advises keeping everything in one
place by creating a separate address dedicated solely to
wedding planning.
2. Do your research beforehand.
“Many Wedding Fairs have a selected preview of
vendors that will be exhibiting that can be found on their
website or social media,” Paelmo says. “If you know
what you want ahead of time, you can have a few choices
in mind and then you can make an informed decision
during the fair.”
3. Bring a notebook.
Large wedding fairs can upwards of 100 different ven-

 DJ says providing music for weddings
isn’t just a job, it’s an ‘honor’

Believe it or not, Josh
Rheaume used to be “the
shyest kid you’d ever meet.”
That was before he had to
fill in as a disc jockey at a
roller rink in Detroit when he
was 15 years old.
“I didn’t want to do it but
the DJ didn’t show up, so I
had to,” Rheaume said. “But
the more I did it, the more used
to it I got. I started to have fun
with it.”
The rest is history.
From those shy beginnings, Rheaume
now DJs full time and emcees large events
such as parades and Bud Bash, which
annually draws thousands to Houghton
Lake.
In addition to his regular gigs, Rheaume
also works as a wedding DJ, which is
something he particularly enjoys.
“It’s a challenge,” Rheaume said. “You
don’t know anyone at the wedding so you
have to figure out what kind of music they
like to get them on the dance floor.”
Rheaume isn’t just a DJ and emcee at
weddings. He also helps plan and
coordinate the entire day to ensure things
go smoothly and seamlessly.
This work provides Rheaume with a lot
of satisfaction.
“I enjoy watching people have a good
time,” Rheaume said. “Being a part of a
wedding is more of an honor than
it is a job.”
So far this year, Rheaume said
he already has 26 weddings booked
but he’s still accepting clients.
Rheaume said his rates are
slightly higher than other DJs in
the Cadillac area but around
average compared to professional
DJs throughout the state.
Travel to any part of the state
isn’t a problem for Rheaume, who
adjusts the rate in order to rent a
hotel room for the night.
While there are standard tunes most
everyone wants to hear at weddings,
Rheaume said he also has many other songs
available in almost every genre.
