ASSIGNMENT NO: 2

CO2 Explain concept of metal cutting and tool engineering.

1) Explain mechanism of chip formation. What are various forces take part in chip
forming. What is significance of merchant circle

2) An orthogonal cutting of steel is done with 15° rake angle tool, with depth of cut
‘t’ (uncut chip thickness) 0.14 mm , width of cut (b) 5.5 mm. The cutting speed is
2. m/sec. The chip thickness (tc) 0.228 mm. The cutting force Fc is 540 N and
thrust force is 225 N. Calculate from Merchant’s theory, Shear angle, friction
angle, shear stress along the shear plane and power for cutting operation.
