Why an engine doesn’t get overheated?
Yes student M
Sir, because the engine
of vehicle is equipped of
cooling system.
Exactly. There is water cooled engine and air cooled engine.

3. PRESENTATION
Today, we are going to discussed about an “engine cooling
system”. But before we are going to discuss, we will have an
activity first. Posted on the board is a “word search puzzle”.
What you are going to do is to find words parts of cooling
system list on the right. The words may appear horizontal,
vertical, diagonally (backward/upward)
When you find the words, circle it on the puzzle, then right it
on the blackboard then we will discuss later on the purpose of
that parts. I will call five students to answer the activity.

Upon completion of the words search puzzle, participants will

be call to say something or explain the words they have
encircled, based on what they understand.

1. DISCUSSION
What do you think the purpose of cooling system?
Yes student A? Sir it keeps the engine
from overheating
Yes the cooling system keeps the engine
at most efficient temperature all speeds
and operating conditions.

3
What will happen if this heat in an engine will not taken away?
Yes student B?
Sir, if this heat will not
taken away in engine, it
will cause the damages
Yes correct. parts in engine.

Now how the cooling system works?

Yes student J? The cooling system
works by sending a
liquid coolant through
passages in the engine
blocks and heads of
engine. These will be
done by water pump,
thermostat and radiator.
Very good.
As student J said the cooling system send a
liquid coolant through the passage of the engine
blocks and heads as the coolant flows through
this passage it picks up heat from the engine. This heated
coolant makes its way through the radiator this hot liquid is
cooled by the air stream. Once this fluid
is cooled it returns to the engine to absorb more heat.

There are five basic parts of cooling system to do the job in

controlling engine temperature.

What are those?

Yes student S? Sir the five basic parts
of cooling system are
water pump, water
jackets thermostat,
radiator, pressure cap
Correct! and cooling fan.
As you can see the pictures (present the picture)
the cylinder block and cylinder head have internal
passage or water jackets, the coolant or antifreeze flows
through here and picks up some heat, and cool the metal parts
and it heats the coolant. And this the job done by the water
pump, water pump pushes the hot coolant out of the water
jackets and through the radiator.

How the radiator works?

Yes student B? Sir, in the radiator the
coolant/water losses
heat to the passing air.

4
Yes the radiator is also called exchanger, it has two sets of
passages. One set is for the coolant and the other is for outside
air. Once the coolant flows here in the radiator the coolant loses
heat to the passing air and flows back again through the
water jackets and pick up heat again. Another component
in the radiator for vehicles with an automatic transmission is a
separate tank mounted inside one of the tanks. Transmission
fluid is piped through this tank inside a tank to be cooled by the
coolant flowing past it before returning the transmission.

What is the purpose of thermostat? Sir the purpose of

Yes student C? thermostat it allows the
coolant to flow.

Yes very good. The purpose of thermostat is to control the

coolant flow and the temperature of an engine. When an engine
is cooled the thermostat closes to prevent the circulation to
radiator. As the engine warms up to the design temperature the
thermostat opens to allow coolant flow through the radiator.

What will happen if the thermostat failure? Sir the engine will get
Yes student F? overheated because the
coolant cannot
circulate/flows through
the system.
Yes very good!
This is one also performed by the cooling fan.
Fan pulls or pushes outside air through the radiator.
This improves engine cooling especially at idle low speed.

We have also a pressure cap is a simple device that will

maintain pressure of the cooling system up to a certain point.

3.GENERALIZATION
Any questions or clarification? None Sir
Now we’ll have an activity. Let’s find out if you really
understand the lesson.
I have here a ‘concept worksheet’ with a topic
as the keyword. What are you going to do, is to think
and write the words on the map that relate to the focal
word.

I will call five students to write on every cluster things that

They have learned from the topic.

Any questions? None sir.

4. APPLICATION
This time we will have an activity I have here pictures of the
basic parts of cooling system.

What are you going to do is to put the names that fit on the
pictures and explain its operation.
I will call six students to answer.

Thermostat
2.

3. Cooling fan

4. Water jackets

5. VALUING Now class, I want you to test your skills on how to pull out
basic parts of cooling system. We proceed to our laboratory
room. I choose two from the group to diassemble the radiator
and waterpump from the mock up.
