Appendix B: Seismic Un*x at Michigan Tech

The use of SU on any given system depends on the “path” that is assigned by the
system administrator. This Appendix is an example for system administrators who may

want to emulate the approach we use at Michigan Technological University.

B.1 Using Seismic Un*x

At Michigan Tech, you must use SU within a special terminal (x-term) window. Do
the following:
1. Log into a Unix machine.
2. Open an x-term window and enter seismicx. This opens another window, titled
Seismic Un*x #, where # is your SU version number.
The first time you do this, it will take a while, because you are creating a new
subdirectory structure.
3. In the Seismic Un*x window, enter pwd (on some computers you have to use
cwd) to see the directory in which you are now working; it should be in your
home area, in a directory called seismicx.
4. Enter ls to see a listing of the files and subdirectories in that directory. You
should see a subdirectory called demos.
5. Enter cd demos to change to that subdirectory, then enter ls to see a listing
within it. When you want to move back up one level of directory,
enter cd .. (Yes, that is: cd space dot dot. Note that if you enter cd
by itself, you will go to your home directory.).
After you have worked in the demos directory for a while, if you decide you have
made a mess of the demos directory, remove the directory and all its contents, then close
the Seismic Un*x window. The next time you open a Seismic Un*x window, the system
will create a fresh demos directory.

B.2 Terminal Windows

You must open a Seismic Un*x x-term window and work within it to execute SU
commands. If you are not in a Seismic Un*x window, your SU commands will not work,
even if you are in the seismicx directory (or any of its subdirectories). This is because the
setup procedure that places the SU package in the user’s “path” is only in place when the
user is in an x-term window also created by the setup procedure.
