Planning for Professional

Growth
Using the self-assessment checklist, I have identified the following areas that could guide my planning for
growth this term.
● Developing and implement strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners in a safe, caring and inclusive learning
environment that meets the needs of all learners

● Practice information fluency skills and use written and oral language to communicate effectively

● Integrate technologies effectively in support of teaching and learning

● Develop foundational knowledge of the content and processes required to teach the alberta program of studies
Goal #1
Guiding Question: How can I practice being able to talk/teach in front of the class efficiently and effectively?

Strategies: Timeline: April 3rd, 2019

Practice teaching/talking in front of small groups or my family when I get the chance so I can start “developing my voice”.

Doing my lesson plan in front of the class will be a good way of practicing talking in front of people, as I can focus on making eye contact with the
students, speaking to them, and being able to explain questions without stuttering.

Ask my practicum mentor how they efficiently talk in the class with a strong, confident voice, and to use and practice the tips they give me so I
can improve my speaking and practice.

Before my lesson plan or talking in front of the class I can prepare myself by slowing down my breathing, practicing what I am going to say by
myself, and even get to know the students in my class better so I will not be as nervous.

Looking in our textbook for useful strategies I can put towards how I talk and how I can boost my confidence when speaking in front of a class.

Indicators and Measures of Success:

I will get advice from my education teacher on how my lesson plan went. I think I will also know how I improve
depending on how less uneasy I get when I am speaking.

Reflection:

During this semester I want to learn how I can speak clearly, consistently, and with confidence when I teach. I
want to learn how other teachers are able to speak with confidence in the classroom and how I can apply what
other teachers tell me into my lesson plan.

I will get to my goal by taking the advice from my mentor teachers, as well as others, on speaking to students
and use that during the year when speaking to the class and when doing my lesson plan. By taking the
opportunity of doing the lesson plan, I can prepare by speaking to other groups and studying the information
of my lesson during the year so I will be fully prepared and confident.

I will know I reached my goal when I am able to take away new speech skills from my mentor teacher, as well
as obtaining information from the textbook. This goal will overall help me throughout my teaching career so i
will be comfortable talking and teaching in front of many groups of people.

Goal #2
Guiding Question: What strategies can I use to teach to a variety of students and be confident they all
understand the material?

Strategies: Timeline: April 3rd, 2019

Before my lesson plan, I can make sure I am very confident in the Chapter I am teaching so I will be able to answer and questions students ask.
Efficiently and with knowledge.
During my practicum, I can ask my mentor how he is able to make sure every student in his class understands the content and what techniques
he uses in order to do so.

I can talk to my education teacher, as well as others, and ask them how I can do my lesson and what strategies I can use to benefit their learning.

I can ask multiple students how their teachers currently, and other teachers in the past, have taught effectively to meet their needs and other
students needs in the classroom

Looking in our textbook (Part 3) I can find information on how other teachers met the needs of diverse students in the classroom.

Indicators and Measures of Success:

I will be told by my mentor teacher how my progress has been during the practicum. My mark that I get after
my lesson plan will reflect how I was able to teach the class successfully. By understanding the textbook
readings, I will be able to obtain information on how various types of students learn.

Reflection:

During this semester, I want to continue to grow and understand how I will address every students needs when
it comes to learning. I want to analyze how students vary in intelligence during my practicum and how that
affects the way the teacher teaches. I would also like to see how I can use the different techniques given to me
by my mentor and others in my lesson plan.

I will get to my goal by taking different techniques from my mentor teacher and others and use them in my
lesson plan. I will understand the chapter that I am teaching in the lesson plan fully so I will have the
knowledge to answer anybodies questions. I will read the textbook and see what information it has on
teaching diverse learners.

I will know I got there when my mentor teacher gives me feedback on how I did during my practicum. I will
also know after I get the mark back from my lesson plan and see the comments she had on the way I was
teaching. I will also know when I have my own strategies that I can use in the classroom that I know were
effective.
