WILDLIFE AND HUMANS:

FINDING THE

Balance
• CARA MOUNTEER
ENG 2010 •
PETE We need to expand Utah and build
more houses!
JENNA How do we grow our economy and
keep the animals out?!
These seem to be
the main issues in
our communities.
How to continue to
expand Utah and
grow without
taking away the
land from the
wildlife and
endangering our
children with
wildlife.
"a cougar sighting in a
residential area caused
two elementary schools
to shelter in place"

"please be vigilant
of your
surroundings."
Herriman police
"I stepped out the
door and said,
'What's going on? Did
you see a deer?' And
she was like, 'No, a
mountain lion just ran
out from under the
car!'" Velasquez

What if this dad didn't hear his daughter scream?

What if the mountain lion decided to attack instead
of run? How are we protecting our families and little
ones from dangerous animals?
We do have protocols set up to help protect our children.
Shelter in place for schools and reverse 911 calls to let
neighborhoods be aware..
The question remains-is that enough?

"Make yourself look big by opening your jacket, raising

your arms and waving them. Speak loud and firm to the
cougar," wildlife officials say.
Regulated, responsible hunting is
the driving force that maintains
abundant wildlife.
"It’s a whirlwind of complex feelings from excitement at
success, to sadness of death. He said that for the thoughtful
hunter, it’s a rather sorrowful process."-Ross
Deer - What about us? The homes you are building
use to be my favorite place to find clovers.
Doe - Where you just built your shopping center use
to be where I would have my babies.
"Deer typically begin using traditional winter ranges..
in early November... Deer usually continue browsing
until spring green-up in March or April but can
continue browsing until May or later when early
spring flowers such as crocus and tulips are
abundant." "with proper
planning,
homeowners
can assist
wildlife and
create
attractive
landscapes"-
DWR.
