Internships provide me an opportunity to link theory with practice, to see the capacity how I can
make a solution for real world problem, to develop both my practical and theoretical knowledge.
The Internship Program allows me an opportunity to understand the Unique environmental
conditions associated with a particular level of government, such as regional, local
administration and the nonprofit sector. It provides me the career with demonstrated academic
competence, and a hands-on experience in the public sector. It gives me an opportunity to do
business in group

2.1How I get in to the Company

First DMU institute of technology department of computer engineering gave me a form to
choose companies to internship. After that, since I have internship letter of authorization from
Adigrat university I gave them the letter for acceptance. By reading my letter of authorization
they accepted me. Lastly, they send letter of acceptance to the university and they call me by my
phone and told me that they have accepted me by giving acceptance letter and I joined the
company. .

2.2 The Section of the Company We Have Been Working on:

I have been working in network infrastructure and services of ADU-ICT center on the main
campus. It is responsible for creating and maintaining a vital, constantly evolving network
presence for Adigrat University through continuing developments of the university network, it
coordinates all tasks related to the automation, administration and maintenance of information
systems and networks. Study new automation, upgrading, and maintenance, implementation and
infrastructure of network system.

2.3What we observed during our internship time?

We have observed:
 how to crimp the cables
 work experience
 punctuality in work place
 good behavior in work place
 network materials and how to use it
 network design and how to design

2.4 MATERIALS AND TOOLS USED DURING THE APPARENT SHIP

1. Cables
Cables are used to connect one network device to other network devices or to connect two or
more computers to share printer, scanner etc. Different types of network cables like Coaxial
cable, Optical fiber cable, Twisted Pair cables are used depending on the network's topology,
protocol and size. The devices can be separated by a few meters (e.g. via Ethernet) or nearly
unlimited distances (e.g. via the interconnections of the Internet). There are several types of cable
which are commonly used with LANs. In some cases, a network will utilize only one type of
cable, other networks will use a variety of cable types. The type of cable chosen for a network is
related to the network's topology, protocol, and size. Understanding the characteristics of
different types of cable and how they relate to other aspects of a network is necessary for the
development of a successful network.

Coaxial lines confine the electromagnetic wave to area inside the cable, between the center
conductor and the shield. The transmission of energy in

 Twisted pair cabling; is a form of wiring in which pairs of wires (the forward and return
conductors of a single circuit) are twisted together for the purposes of cancelling out
electromagnetic interference (EMI) from other wire pairs and from external sources. This
type of cable is used for home and corporate Ethernet networks. Depending on devices
they connect to share data by twisted pair cable.
Fig 3; UTP cable

The most common copper network media is unshielded twisted pair ( UTP) cable. UTP in
Ethernet consists of eight wires twisted into four color-coded pairs and then wound inside a cable
jacket. The colored pairs identify the wires for proper connection at the terminals.

Fig 4; internal part of UTP cable

Cabling of twisted pair cabling is divided into two major parts:

 Straight through
 Crossover

Straight through
Straight through cable is a type of twisted pair copper wire cable for LAN use for which the RJ-
45 connectors at each end have the same pin out. The wires on the cable are crossed over so that
they receive signal pins on the connector on one end are connected to the transmit signal pins on
the connector on the other end. Straight-through cable is used to connect computers and other
end-user devices (e.g., printers) to networking devices such as hubs and switches. It can also be
used to directly connect like devices (e.g., two hubs or two switches) if the cable is plugged in to
an uplink port on one (but not both) of the devices

The cable standard of straight through is

Table1: cable standard

Cross over cable: - Is a type of twisted pair copper wire cable for LAN use for which the second
and third pairs on one end of the cable will be reversed on the other end. Cross over cabling is
used as a backbone cable to connect two or more switches in LAN, or connect two isolated hosts
to create a mini-LAN. Crossover cable is used to connect two like devices without the use of an
uplink port.
Fig5; cross over

 Fiber optic cable

Fiber optic cable or simply fiber contains one or several glass or plastic fiber at its center, or
core. Data is transmitted via pulsing light sent from a laser through the central fibers.
Surrounding the fibers is layer of glass of plastic called cladding.
Like twisted pair and coaxial cabling, fiber optic cabling comes in a number of different
varieties, depending on its intended use and the manufacturer. For example, fiber optic cable
used to connect the facilities of large telephone and data carriers may contain as many as 1000
fibers and be heavily sheathed to prevent damage from extreme environmental conditions. At the
other end of the spectrum, fiber optic patch cables for use on LANs may contain only two
standards of fiber and be pliable enough to wrap around your hand.

Fig 6; fiber optics

All fiber cable variations fall into two categories

 Single mode fiber (SMF)

 Multimode fiber (MMF)

Single mode fiber (SMF)
Uses a narrow core (less than 10 microns in diameter) through which light generated by a laser
travels over one path, reflecting very little. This continuity allows single mode fiber to
accommodate the highest bandwidths and longest distances of all network transmission media.

Multimode fiber (MMF)

contains a core with a larger diameter than single mode fiber, the most common size is 62.5
microns over which many pulse of light generated by a laser or LED travel at different angles. It
is commonly found on cables that connect a router to a switch or a server on the backbone of a
network. Because of its reliability, fiber is currently used primarily as a cable that connects the
many segments of a network. Fiber optic cable provides the following benefits over copper
cabling:-
 Extremely high throughput

 Very high resistance to noise

 Excellent security

 Ability to carry signals for much longer distances before requiring repeaters than copper
cable

 Industry standard for high speed networking

The most significant drawback to the use of fiber is that covering a certain distance with fiber
optic cable is much more expensive than using twisted pair cable. Also, fiber optic cable requires
special equipment to splice, which means that quickly repairing a fiber optic cable in the field
can be difficult. Fiber’s characteristics are summarized in the following list:
Throughput: - fiber has proved reliable in transmitting data at rates that can reach 100 gigabits.
Fibers amazing throughput is partly due to the physics of light traveling through glass. Therefore,
light based signals can be transmitted at faster rates and with fewer errors than electrical pulse.
Cost: - fiber optic cable is the most expensive transmission medium. Because of its cost, most
organizations find it impractical to run fiber to every desktop. Not only is the cable itself
expensive than copper cabling, but fiber optic NIC and hubs can cost as much as five times more
NICs and hubs designed for UTP networks. In addition, hiring skilled fiber cable installer’s costs
more than hiring twisted pair cable installers.
Connector: -with fiber cabling, you can use any of 10 different types of connectors. Four of the
most common connector types: - ST (straight tip), SC (subscriber connector or standard
connector), LC (local connector), and MJ-RJ (mechanical transfer registered jack). Each of these
connectors can be obtained for single mode and multimode fiber optic cable. Existing fiber
networks typically used in Adigrat University is SC, LC and MT-RJ connectors. The MT-RJ
connector is unique because it contains two strands of multimode fiber in a single ferrule.
Noise immunity: - because fiber does not conduct electrical current to transmit signals, it is
unaffected by EMI. Its impressive noise resistance is one reason why fiber can span such long
distances before it requires repeaters to regenerate its signal.
Size and scalability: - depending on the types of fiber optic cable used, segment lengths vary
from 150 to 40000meters. Combination of silica and Germania. The cladding surrounding the
core is made of pure silica.
2. Trucking: We used this device in data communications transmission systems to provide
many users with access to a network by sharing multiple lines or frequencies. As the name
implies, the system is like a tree with one trunk and many branches.

Fig 7; trucking
3. Switch

A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers

together within one local area network (LAN). Ethernet switch devices were
commonly used on home networks before home routers became popular;
broadband routers integrate Ethernet switches directly into the unit as one of their
many functions.

Fig 8; switch

4. Converter: We use this device to connect two different media types such as twisted pair
with fiber optic which we take from Tel.

Fig 9; Converter

5. Server

A server is a system (software and suitable computer hardware) that responds to

requests across a computer network to provide, or help to provide, a network
service. Servers can be run on dedicated computer, which is also often referred to
as "the server", but many networked computers are capable of hosting servers. In
many cases, a computer can provide several services and have several servers
running.
Fig 10; Server

6. RJ-45

The RJ45 physical connector is standardized as the IEC 60603-7 8P8C modular connector with
different "categories" of performance, with all eight conductors present. A similar standard jack
once used for modem/data connections.

Fig 11; RJ-45

7. Router

This is a hardware device that routes data (hence the name) from a local area network (LAN) to
another network connection. A router acts like a coin sorting machine, allowing only authorized
machines to connect to other computer systems. Most routers also keep log files about the local
network activity.
Fig 12; Router

8. Crimping Tool
It used for crimping network cable after we finish possible order of the color for straight through
and crossover using RJ-45.

• It is a tool designed to crimp or connect a connector to the end of a cable.

• We also use it for crimping RJ-45 (8-Pin) connectors and also include a
wire.

Fig 13; Crimping Tool

9. Drill Bean: I used this device in material arrangement during me adjust trucking before
layering. And also drill the wall in order to connect the trunk and node to the wall.

Fig 14; Drill bean

10. Punch down tool

A punch down tool is a small hand tool used by Telecommunication and network technicians. It
is used for inserting wire into insulation displacement connectors on punch down blocks, patch
panels and surface mount boxes (also known as biscuit jacks). Most punch down tools is of the
impact type, consisting of a handle, an internal spring mechanism, and a removable slotted
blade. To use the punch down tool, a wire is pre-positioned into a slotted post, and then the
punch down tool is pressed down on top of the wire, over the post. Once the required pressure
is reached, the internal spring is triggered, and the blade pushes the wire into the slot, cutting
the insulation, and securing the wire. For light -duty use, there are also less expensive punch
down tools with fixed blades and no impact mechanism. The trimming blade cutting edge works
against the plastic insulating post. Kroner blades require a separate scissor-like mechanism for
trimming the wire.

2.5PROCEDURES AND METHODS

Networking

In the ICT department the networking portion was one of the subsections under my hosting
company (ADU ICT). I have been participating and have got a great knowledge about it during
the four months I spent as an intern there. I will give the priority for it to describe the work flow
and procedures undertaking in a complete networking installations.

 There were some procedures during this task.

 Taking of pre-training about networking by our adviser
 Collecting of data which was carried out daily
 Using previous theoretical knowledge & also reading some references with hard copies
and internet related to networking. Thus are the strategies used to implement the NW
installation
Procedures during network installation are:
1. It has been designed the floor layout
2. It has been continued to the physical design according to the lay out.
3. It has been prepare the required materials properly.
4. It has been selected one office for the rank to hung 180 centimeters high from the floor.
5. It has been measured the dimensions for the trunk to be 65 cm high from the floor.
6. It has been penetrated the trunk to fasten with the wall through screws.
7. It has been drilled the wall according to the given dots on the wall.
8. It has been inserted a feature to the hole.
9. Finally, it has been fastened the trunk, node and rank properly with the wall.

2.6 How good I have been in performing my tasks

During my internship program I work my tasks in punctual way , as well as my supervisor is

such a sincere man when I ask a question he answered courteously. All in all I did my task
effectively and efficiently, and I was punctual when I performed my tasks.

2.7 Challenges I have faced while performing my tasks

Some of the challenges I faced while performing my work tasks are

 Week responsibility of the employees to the internship student,

 Low of knowledge on practical skill
 Low knowledge about the internship

2.8 The measures I takes are

To make my internship time suitable and smart I have tried to find a solution for the above
mentioned challenges. As one of the goals of internship program is to make students solution
maker about problems that exist around different company and their personal life I have tried to
give solution to the problems that faced me as follows:

 Patiently waiting to let as in to work for

 Studying reference books
 Asking helps to professionals and others who have a better knowledge better than me
 Challenging a problem and strive to solve by any means and never give up
 we just let them the primary objects of internship
CHAPTER-THREE

OVERALL BENEFITS WE GAINED FROM THE INTERNSHIP

During our internship in ADU-ICT we had gain so many benefits. These benefits are gained
from staffs of ADU-ICT particularly from Network Infrastructure and Service department.
During these four months we were able to communicate with our advisor and our supervisor.
Moreover, we learn how to solve problems by team work from staff workers.

3.1Theoretical Knowledge Gained

The internship takes a great roll In terms of upgrading our theoretical knowledge. It helps us gain
more theoretical knowledge related to the real world that we didn’t get it from school. And also
help us to know how our theoretical knowledge is cooperated with other many professions and
made us in to multi-dimensional way of thinking. Some of them are:
• We learn the different application that used to solve the problems of the campus.
• We read manual and books that are used to know how the data center manages
and also how the system equipment is used.

3.2 Benefits We Have Gained In Terms Of Improving Our Interpersonal

Communication Skills

Communication is a process of exchanging on conveying information and message in an attempt

to create shared understanding. From the definition we have put above particularly from
underlined phrase internship helps to understand what seems to be our communication skill with
different groups of people both engineers and the other workers who works at section together.
 Thus it helps us in the following ways:-

1. To have high level of self-awareness to creating good and long lasting impression on
others.
2. To make others comfortable by selecting appropriate behavior that suits our
personality while listening their communication on work place during working time.
3. To communicate with a purpose (i.e. when there is a purpose communication important
things can be obtained)
4. To ensure mutual understanding

5. To avoid misunderstandings,

6. To have a good supportive message communication i.e. communication concerns with

respect others like: Offering to help out on project listening what they want to say about
7. Doing nice things for our co-workers Showing respect for others views and telling

8. To understand and appreciate diversity and multicultural work environment.

3.2.1 Interpersonal Communication Skills

During our internship period the Interpersonal skills, which are the life skills I use every day to
communicate and interact with other people, individually and in groups are good for me. not only
how I communicate with others, but also we got confidence and we got ability to listen and understand.
Problem solving, decision making and personal stress management are also considered interpersonal
skills. Through this internship, I found that I matured and I gained many new perspectives, such as
problem solving skill , diversity, effective communication, teamwork and service recovery , attention to
detail, time management, personal empowerment, self-confidence, responsibility and cultural sensitivity.
our supervisor was so kind to answer with patience and teach me much that made this internships
enjoyable. I had gotten a wonderful internship that spent such a happy moment with all of them.
Though , still have so much to learn, I think this challenge was what should include in our career. This
will help us much more on my future planning.

3.3 Team Playing Skills

Most of the time we had work with our supervisor though gained in terms of improving our team playing skill
during my internship period in main campus ICT development office, data center is most valuable . Because of
when I was worked at the main campus I could get more knowledge because of there are many network
materials at that place.

3.4 Leadership Skills

Leadership skills are the tool, behaviors, and capabilities that a person needs in order to be successful at
motivating and directing others. Yet true leadership skills involve something more; the ability to help people
grow in their own abilities. It can be said that the most successful leaders are those that drive other to active their
own success. I gained leadership skills from our supervisor during the internship period which includes
managing time, motivating individuals, giving feedback and building teams.

3.5 Work Ethics Related Issue

An internship is an opportunity to learn the skills and behaviors along with the work values that are required for
success in the workplace. Workplace ethics are established codes of conduct that reflect the values of the
organization or company where you are employed. I have seen possess a willingness to work hard from our
supervisor and all staff workers during our internship period. In addition to working hard it is also important to
work smart. This means I acquired the most efficient way to complete tasks and finding ways to save time while
completing daily assignments. It’s also important to care about our job and complete all projects while
maintaining a positive attitude.

3.6 Entrepreneurship Skills

“Entrepreneurship is the ability to “create and build something from practically nothing. It is initiating, doing,
achieving and building an enterprise or organization, rather than just watching, analyzing or describing one. It is
the knack of sensing an opportunity where others see chaos, contradiction and confusion. It is the ability to
build a founding team to complement your own skills and talents. It is the know-how to find, marshal and
control resources and to make sure you don’t run out of money when you need it most. Finally, it is the
willingness to take calculated risks, both personal and financial, and then to do everything possible to get the
odds in your favor.”
An entrepreneurship education program consists of wide-ranging subjects, and in every entrepreneurship
education program, learning something at outside classroom like internship in accompany plays an important
role, as well as normal lectures in classroom. Of course, in this respect, the good relationship between
educational institutions and business society is very important for the purpose of implementing an internship
program as a part of curriculum. Interns gain first hand understanding of entrepreneurship along with enhanced
technical, professional, and communication skills.
Chapter four
Conclusion and Recommendations

4.1 Conclusion

The main goal of internship program is to integrate the theoretically acquired concepts with a
Tangible practical demonstration. As such, computer engineering students are more effective in
achieving the intended learning competency as they have developed their practical knowledge
In this internship program I tried to create a good relationship with employees and ask several
questions what is not clear. The other thing I got from this internship program is how to manage
work through this also I have increased my self-confidence, work ethics and how to work
cooperatively with others in the offices, from this I learnt good values and principles like
politeness , respecting others ,giving decision, punctuality ,fulfilling responsibilities, giving a
good attention to others and like. So I conclude that the internship is good opportunity to the
student to have enough knowledge that help student in the future, and its good opportunity to
know work environment and to prepares themselves for the future goal and to have a good Aim
before graduation.

4.2 Recommendation

In our internship program I tried to observe different things but we tried to give some
recommendation about the program.

 As I know this Internship program are essential to all computer students not only
computer students but also essential to all university student to know the practical world
and to adopt the outside environment. But the company has a poor attention to this
program.
 The company willingness of this program is good because it can create awareness for
young computer graduate student by supporting them in aspect and create smooth
business environment for those have creative knowledge and skills. But is not good
because all employees are not interested to show everything and every work in detail
because of less knowledge about that internship peoples need. In our thinking I want to
recommend them they must be upgrade their knowledge about internship program for the
student, the company and to my country.
 The other problem faced is less flow of information from the company to internship
student, and also the employees also busy on their work. Because of this and other
problems I was not able to know what I wanted to know. I tried to get something by
ourselves and some willing employees help. But I really appreciate the companies work
habit and the company’s vision to be a successful.
