In order to improve the quality of POLITEKNIK NEGERI SAMARINDA student then every
prospective student of the S1-TERAPAN program is required to conduct an internship to apply
the teaching and learning activities that have been conducted during the lecture and add insight
into the students around the industry who will later become workplaces for undergraduate-
applied student

CHAPTER 1
PRELIMINARY
A. Background
Based on Government Regulation No.2 of 1989 concerning Education and
Government Regulation No.30 of 1990 concerning Higher Education, it is stated that there are
2 (two) educational channels in Indonesia, namely academic lines and professional lines. In the
academic path of science development, in general it includes pure sciences such as
mathematics, physics, and others. Whereas in the professional path which is the ultimate goal
of education, graduates can carry out (skilled) work on their respective disciplines prepared as
ready-to-use personnel.
Politeknik is one of the lines of professional education with emphasis on the
proportion of curriculum compared to the practice between theory and the same. This is
because after graduation students are expected to be ready to work, but it is realized that
although the practice portion is already large, actual field experience is still needed. This is
intended as a provision of knowledge so that it does not require special training or adjustments
that are too long if they have graduated later. Therefore, it is important to do the Internship
Program. In connection with this internship process, it is necessary to collaborate with
companies and government agencies (who will later become users of Polytechnic graduates)
to accommodate S1-Terapan students who will carry out internships. Indeed, it is realized, that
the placement of students in jobs that are in accordance with their scientific discipline is an
obstacle that is prone and confidential for a company or agency. For this reason, it should be
stated that the purpose of this internship is solely to train students to work and study the world
of companies or government agencies where they practice and train students to know the real
conditions of the workplace.
The Department of Chemical Engineering is a place where the development of
science emerges and to meet the needs of experts and skilled in managing production systems
or chemical industry systems, which involve human components, materials, and machinery /
production facilities. The industrial world and universities are an interrelated entity. These
relationships are often referred to as partnerships. A student who is studying, especially
students majoring in engineering need to understand the real conditions that exist in the
industrial world. Students not only understand theory and practice lectures, but also need to
understand the real condition of the company. Changes in technology and the acceleration of
information have affected aspects of the production process in the company. With the role of
universities, research and development is expected to be able to answer the challenges in these
changes.
Through an internship program at the company, this S1-Terapan student is expected
to be able to find problems, which will then be analyzed, handled, and dealt with appropriately.
This method is done by giving students the opportunity to go directly and find reality and
problems that exist in the field / industry.
Considering this, I chose PT PERTAMINA HULU MAHAKAM as my place of
internship. I want to explore the Chemical Industry Process system in this company, in
accordance with the department I took and my educational background, namely the Chemical
Industry Technology Study Program majoring in Chemical Engineering at Politeknik Negeri
Samarinda.
B. Purpose
The internship objectives for S1-Terapan students are as follows:
1. Improve students' ability to the real conditions of the company
2. Add insight into chemical industry processes that are related to techniques that have
been studied in college.
3. Being able to identify problems in the industry by going directly to the factory.
4. Able to provide solutions and appropriate handling of problems that exist in the
industry.
C. Usability
For students
1. Obtain practical work experience and learn more about the relevance of knowledge
received during college, where theories and practices obtained can be applied in real
situations in the field / industry.
2. Applying scientific disciplines that have been obtained and owned both on and off
campus.
3. Expanding insight, knowledge, and deepening before plunging into the real field. And
can measure the ability of yourself in dealing with technical problems, especially in the
work environment later.
4. Is a variety of learning in order to explore Chemical Engineering which is directly
related to the field and application in the field.
For the company
1. Helps complete tasks and daily work at the company where the internship is.
2. Means to bridge cooperative relations between companies and Politeknik Negeri
Samarinda, especially regarding labor recruitment.
3. Corporate imaging facilities, especially in the scope of S1-Terapan students in the
Politeknik Negeri Samarinda Chemical Engineering Department.
For Politeknik Negeri Samarinda
1. Input to evaluate the extent to which Chemical Engineering Students understand and
practice what has been practiced in college to be applied or used in the company.
2. Print a workforce that is skilled, creative, dynamic, professional, honest, and
responsible for doing a job.
3. Imaging facilities at the Politeknik Negeri Samarinda in the company's environment
and establishing cooperation with the place of internship company so that later it can
facilitate the Politeknik graduates in finding work.
CHAPTER II

6. Results to be achieved
Results to be achieved in the activities of this internship is the increased quality of the skill of
the students in the academic field that is not only based on the theory of the course but also the
shape of the application in the form of practice. In addition, it also adds insightful work that
can be used as a cornerstone in prospect future i.e. After entering the world of work.
