Opening Statement:

“Economy and island life are contrasting, if one goes up, the other will goes down, and in Koh
Lipe, because of the economy goes up, the island life is going down” said one of the
interviewees during the CWW trip. As everyone is already aware of the fact that the ecotourism
in Southern part of Thailand is affecting the life of nature as well as the life of local people. The
growth of economy means many tourist are visiting the island, according to the statistics
provided by Ms. Stefanie, claims “tourist visitors per year is estimated to be 1,500,000 - 2
million people (based on 30-35 direct flights from Bangkok per day)” due to tourist visits to the
island, according to Jacob Y. de Groot Started from his research, the Urak Lawoi people resettled
on Koh Lipe island, they were forced to leave their island that has been transformed into a
national park that once was their home island (de Groot, 2010).

Resolution: therefore the sea gypsy or the Urak Lawoi are requesting the Thai government to
be more aware of the situation and take control to settle the issue by:
1. strictly control the numbers of resorts on the Koh Lipe island by reducing the amount of
resorts
2. Giving authorities to organizations such as Trash Hero to organize conduct even larger
events to clean up the trash
3. Organizing events for planting more trees or other plants on the island

Resolution speech:
Hello again fellow representatives from different departments, companies and organizations,
we’ve gathered here to discuss the issue concerning the topic of ecotourism, and to come up with
a conclusion to resolve the issue as well as benefiting everyone involved. The sea gypsy also
wanted to acknowledge that not every problem has a perfect solution, thus, this issue that we all
are discussing today can not be solved by just looking from one perspective, moreover not only
thinking about one’s benefit, but we have to come together and come up with a solution that will
be beneficial, if not, harmless to everyone sitting here today.

Therefore the sea gypsy community stands here today and to present what we think is the best
solution for all the stakeholders and wishing to satisfy everyone with their needs.

As stated last week in the speech presented by the sea gypsy along with the environmentalist and
trash hero organization, which reads “Economy and island life are contrasting, if one goes up, the
other will goes down” from an interview conducted during the CWW trip on Koh Lipe island.
From this quote from one of the employee on Koh Lipe, there shows that if what we want is to
benefit both the nature and the economy; however these two factors can not go along together,
not on the same island, not on Koh Lipe. They must be separated, the resorts and the sea gypsies
must have their own place to develop their own way of living.

Since the economy has been growing on the island Koh Lipe, and as for obvious reasons, it
might be impossible to move all the resorts and constructions away from Koh Lipe, additionally,
since Koh Lipe has been developed, it will be waste of money to removing and reconstructing all
of the buildings to a new location; however, there is a chance to provide a separate land from
Koh Lipe for the sea gypsies, also we are acknowledged that many of the sea gypsies are
working for resorts and some businesses, therefore this resolution will be allowing the growth of
economy to continue on the island while sea gypsies live their traditional way of living on other
island; however if the sea gypsy are adapted and wants to stay on the island, they will be
allowed. Lastly, the sea gypsy is pleasing to hear how the hotel owner, diving companies and the
ferry departments are taking actions to reduce the impact to the environment and also sustaining
their business at the same time, which is good to improve the island life on Koh Lipe.

The sea gypsies believe that this resolution will be beneficial for most people involved, therefore
to make this happen, the sea gypsies community would like to invite all representatives who are
satisfied with this proposal to come together and propose a letter to the government of Thailand
to seek for a new place to let the sea gypsies live with their traditional way of living and let the
economy continue to grow on Koh Lipe.
