The Italian shipbuilders can boast an antique tradition that dates back to the (1911) (1912)
magnificence of ancient Rome. Craftsmanship of shipbuilding is very old and was
mastered first by the Romans in order to extend their Empire to the four corners of
the earth. This ability passed through centuries of splendour and prosperity and is
nowadays characterized by the universally recognized excellence of the Made in Italy.
A good example is the “Arsenale”, built in 1104 by the Republic of Venice, which in
the 15th century became the largest industrial park in the world, or the shipbuilding
“Fortuna Redux”
industry developed during several years by the Italian Maritime Republics Genoa,
Venice, Pisa and Amalfi, or again the flourishing of the production sites of Genoa and
Naples in the 19th century.

The latter, in 1903 planned the “Glauco”, the first modern Italian submarine after the

WELL-INTEGRATED GROUP
UN GRANDE GRUPPO
INTEGRATO

With more than 7,000 ships built in over 200 years of history, lots of which still
remaining in our collective imagination, Fincantieri is the heir of the great
Italian shipbuilding tradition.
The Company, established in 1959 as Società Finanziaria Cantieri Navali -
Fincantieri S.p.A., in 1984 turned into an operating company, as a result of the
merger of eight of its subsidiaries working in the shipbuilding and servicing
fields as well as in engine construction. At the end of 2008 the Company has
taken over Manitowoc Marine Group, now Fincantieri Marine Group, one of
the leading mid-sized shipbuilders in the United States for commercial and
government customers.
The North American shipyards can boast more than 100 years of history.
They were established in 1902 as Manitowoc Company in Manitowoc, a small
town in Wisconsin. In the same year their first ship was launched. Since then 4 5
a wide range of vessels was built, for lake, river and ocean navigation.

Over the years they coped with a wide variety of specialized markets, including
28 submarines during World War II and the famous red Staten Island Ferries
that, during the last century, have provided shuttled service between Manhattan
and Staten Island. Nowadays they are leaders in new construction, conversion,
maintenance, and ship repair service for the Great Lakes, operating more
than 60% of the d ry docks in the area. They are also leading big and mid-sized
shipbuilders for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard.
World leader in cruise shipbuilding, Fincantieri is one of the world’s most
prominent and diversified realities in marine engineering as well as a reference
operator for large ferries and in the naval sector, with a wide range of ships
such as surface vessels and submarines. Fincantieri sets up as partner with
shipowners and the defence sector providing an innovative, custom-built product “Cruise Europa” (2009)
and excellent service levels.

e Staten Island. The submarine “Nazario Sauro” (1976)

and builds naval systems (stabilizers, solutions and components for naval
propulsion), industrial turbines in addition to diesel engines for land and marine
applications through its subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori. The capability to
conceive complex, unique projects in the naval field has today also been applied
to the luxury market with a new Business Unit dedicated to mega yachts of
over 70 metres. The Fincantieri Group provides its customers with a powerful
production network made up of 14 shipyards (9 in Italy, 4 in the United States,
1 subsidiary in Germany), 2 design centres (Genoa and Trieste, the largest in
the Mediterranean), 1 ship research centre (the Cetena) and 2 production sites
for systems and mechanical components. With a staff of 9,400 people in Italy –
rising to 30,000 with the suppliers – and 1,400 in the United States, the group has
reached an yearly production value of 3 billion euro.

Lloyd Werft - e negli Stati Uniti. Sviluppa e costruisce sistemi in campo navale
so la società Isotta Fraschini Motori.

in the design of highly complex, sophisticated naval vessels and special ships
(oceanographic vessels, Anchor Handling Tug Supply, etc). In addition to
this there is a flexible, fully integrated production system through the Italian 14 15
shipyards of Muggiano and Riva Trigoso and the American Marinette Marine
Corporation (MMC) and Aluminium Center of Excellence (ACE Marine).

grazie all’utilizzo di soluzioni progettuali e costruttive largamente sperimentate
in campo mercantile.
La società Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (Fincantieri 51% e Finmeccanica 49%)
