Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Julia Zimnoch

Using persuasive writing and speaking can advance the progress towards social justice and
quality by emotions, credibility to someone and logical reasoning, because that can help and led
people to talk about their rights. Dr.King purpose in Letter from Birmingham was to end
segregation, persuade people that he should be protesting with them. Julia Alvarez purpose in
Genetics of Justice was to persuade her audience to speak up for justice. Malala Yousafzai
purpose in her Speech was to receive and education to girls and every child all around the
world.
Dr.King use rhetoric by advancing his purpose by protesting for racial justice and using a lot of
pathos; Malala by advance her purpose to receive education for all womens and childs, she
used a lot of ethos and pathos. Alvarez used sequence of events to show people what
Dominicans went through. I think Malala Yousafzai Speech did the best job of advancing
purpose because she get what she want; schools for womens and education for childrens and
she is still doing this to help them.

Dr.King purpose in Letter from Birmingham Jail was to end segregation; address the Clergymen
and persuade them that he should be in Birmingham protesting for racial justice. Dr.King in his
letter use a rhetoric of pathos. “We have waited for more than three hundred and forty years for
constitutional and god-given rights”. Dr.King write it to advance his purpose to show that he
should protesting for justice that they waited for a long time. Also Dr.King used a logical
reasoning of law by logos. “We can never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was
‘legal’ and everything that Hungarian freedom fighters did was ‘illegal’ “. He advancing his
purpose by trying to say that if law is saying that something is right, it not mean it is for real and
if something is illegal it is not bad at all. Martin Luther King is successful of using pathos and
logos and persuading people. He used logical facts about laws and emotions about bad
treatment for racial injustice. It makes people feel to do something about bad treating.

Julia Alvarez purpose was to inform people of hardship faced by those in the Dominican
Republic and persuade her audience to speak up for justice. Alvarez used sequence of events
faced by her family. “I imagine my mother’s life...My mother must be intrigued. She know
nothing about the horrid crimes of the dictatorship”. This event advance her purpose by showing
that Alvarez mother’s parents were afraid to tell her about Trujillo, how terrible he was, so she
knew nothing about the life around her and how it led her mom to not to speak. Julia also use
another even when she wanted to write poem about Trujillo.” This time, my mother warned, I
was not just going to anger family members, but I would be directly responsible for their lives.”
This advances her purpose because Alvarez published the poem, to show humans how terrible
life was; she feel that she need to tell them, to be free and speak up for justice to everyone.
Julia Alvarez is successful of using sequence of events and describing things faced by herself
and her family. She is successful because her poems led her to speak up for justice and stop
her fear about Trujillo’s dictatorship.
Malala Yousafzai purpose in her speech was to advocate for women’s rights, girls education
and free education all over the worlds for every child. Malala used rhetoric of pathos. “But
nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness dies. Strength, power
and courage was born.” Yousafzai by using pathos advanced her purpose by showing people
that this bad events gave her more power to do something and receive the rights that she is
fighting for. Malala used also logos to show people how much people died because of desire to
educate. “Thousands of people have been killed by terrorists and millions have been injured.”
Malala is advancing purpose by showing people that those people died because they wanted
freedom and education that everyone should have. Malala Yousafzai is successful of using
rhetoric in her speech by using a lot of pathos and persuading by emotions. She is successful
because her using of rhetoric led people to believe that everything is possible and even bad
things that happened to her, she still has power to help people.

In my opinion, Malala Yousafzai is the best example. She did the best job of advancing her
purpose of getting education for girls and childs and that happened; and she is still improving
this. Dr.King and Alvarez could improve using rhetoric by providing what and how their lives
changed and how they improving it to get the best they can, to help people get their rights. All of
these pieces are successful because they had courage to speak and tell for their rights, justice
and social equality. All of them led people even a little to change their life and do not live under
the fear of speaking for rights that should be provided for everyone.
