Persuasive writing and speaking can advance progress towards social justice

and equality by changing people's minds. King's purpose was to make the clergymen
think about what king wanted to get out there. Alvarez purpose was to get people to
speak up for justice. Malala's purpose was to get children to get education and women
to get rights. They all do a good job of using rhetoric but the best one is LFBJ.
King's purpose was to get the letter to the clergymen and for them to think about
what King is actually trying to get out there. In the text it says "all christians know that
the colored people will recieve equal rights eventually but it is possible that you are in
too great of a religious hurry."(King 6) Here he is showing him that he has confidence
and that he knows what he is capable of. He tells the clergymen that this is what he
wants to happen and that it will happen. This helps his purpose because if he shows
what he knows and what he can accomplish they can keep that in mind and help him
out. Another thing that he is trying to get out there is that there is nothing wrong with
what they are doing. "Was not jesus an extremist for love-- 'love your enemies, bless
them that curse you, pray for them for that despitefully use you'". King is saying that
there's nothing wrong about being an extremist and doing things that people don't want
you to. To get that point across he used evidence from the bible of jesus and all of the
disciples being the same as himself. He uses ethos to show he knows what he's talking
about. He also uses logos to show he will accomplish what he wants to.
The author's purpose to write this passage is to persuade people to speak up for
justice. The first example is her parents experiences. "perhaps because i was spared, at
ten, from the dictatorship my parents have endured most of their lives, i often imagine
what it must have been like for them growing up" (alvarez 1). This is saying that her
parents lives were not fair because of the dictatorship. This advances the theme by
showing that her parents had no justice. another example is when the dictator killed a
lot of haitian people for no reason. "El Generalissimo ordered the overnight slaughter of
some eighteen thousand haitians." he killed so many people for no reason and this
shows that they had no justice. Alvarez's use of rhetoric was successful because she
used pathos to show that they were treated unfairly. This makes people want to speak
up for them because if they dont they would keep suffering.
The author's purpose for this speech was to get women's rights and education for
the children. She first states clearly what her goal is. “Today I am focusing on women's
rights and girls' education because they are suffering the most” She tells us her purpose
and adds that the people she is targeting her purpose to are suffering. She keeps
saying that the children need the education. “ I am here to speak for the right of
education for every child. I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban
and all the terrorists and extremists. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me.”. She
says also that she doesn't hate the talib that shot her. She shows that she is peaceful
which advances her argument. She was successful because she did make a difference
and everyone listened to what she was saying. She used a lot of pathos to make her
audience more interested.
The best text was the “Letter From Birmingham Jail”. This is the best text
because Kings rhetoric examples to advance his arguments. Compared to the other
articles they are all good but LFBJ uses the best rhetoric examples. LFBJ could have
improved by saying more about how the white people were treating the colored people.
All of the texts were successful, they all got their point across. They also all made that
difference they were meant to make.
