After School Program For 2019 Jan 14th – April 5th M/W

Lead Techer Responsibilities:

1. Help Sister Pond with paper works ( Emergence Contact, pick up sheet, Child Record Summary)
2. Attend Forum meetings every other Thursday
3. Communicate with Brother Rane about the program
4. Assist Brother Rane with 345B class (may include teaching and training practicum students on polices
and best Child Development Practices).
5. Organize children’s files (Make sure folders are Alphabetize)
6. Read/grade practicum student’s lesson plans
7. Interview practicum students
8. Assist children with first aid if other teachers are not available.
9. Report any accident reports
10. Print Check in/out sheet for the semester (easier if you have all days printed out the first of the week and
store them in a folder until you need them. It is best to have 2 copies of each class each time. Ex. K-2nd
class and 3-4th class).
11. Make the Children/ Teacher’s name tags
12. Create/ make any new sign/ laminate
13. Give positive feedback to practicum students
14. Create new ideas to make the program better
15. Communicate with parents about any concern with their child
16. Download pictures off camera onto lab computer
17. Assist teachers with snack when needed
18. Making sure things are lock up at the end of the day: lockers, west& east lab, kitchen

Shared Responsibility

 Check out keys/ to open lockers/ put name on lockers


 Check out the camera
 Take picture with lab camera of meaningful Activities
 Set up/ take down
 Assist children with Homework
 Organize cupboard keep it clutter free
 Cleaning up after activities
 Wash Dishes and put away

Teachers Responsibility:

1. Write and deliver lesson plans


2. Gather and put away materials
3. Help children with homework
4. Prepare snack
5. Check in children ( Parent sign in)
6. Interact with children
7. Be punctual and proactive
Things to do before opening the program:

1. Lay out jobs for the practicum teachers: snack prep, check in, set up & take down, cleaning dishes, put
signs (lockers, bathroom signs—remind handwashing)
2. Make children name tags: let the children decorate them
3. Locker assignments for younger children ( k-2nd)
4. Explain lesson plans to practicum student (Be clear and make sure students know what is expected).
5. Model lesson/ Activity the first week
6. Have lesson plans handed in a 2 days before teaching ( then lead teachers can give back feedback on
things that need to be changed)
7. Assign to have a teacher of the day (One teacher will be the lead teacher for the day) this means taking
charge of what kind of activities should be planed.
8. Do circle time first day to establish rules & expectation with the children.
9. Make signs for the bathroom…(where, how to was hands)
10. Explain lab rules to teachers…dishes, resource rooms, and online resources.
11. Explain rules about prepping lesson, setting up, and taking down with teachers.
12.Get to know children’s names!
13.Take a group photo of practicum students/lead teachers

Parent/children Open House:

 Plan activities for the children


 Get to know each child’s name
 Pre-make name tags for children: Have children decorate their name tags (optional)
 Give a tour of the classroom/building/ outdoor play area
 Parents fill-out paper work/ Brother Rane & Sister Pond will answer parent’s questions
1. Lead teachers first introduce themselves to parents, and then join practicum teachers with the children in a
different classroom).

Things that must happen:

 Do a fire drill once a month and report, (this must happen because of inventory and polices), reporting
sheet is in the work room.
 Establish rules and boundaries with the children
 Make sure teachers are aware children who have allergies, gluten- free, or lactose intolerant.

Things to avoid:

 Paint on floor wall—always have children wear smocks aprons—Always put a tarp down when painting or
any messy activity, even science projects.
 Avoid wasting paper… Children will want to make paper airplanes everyday if you let them, only let them
make paper airplanes during special occasions.
 Make materials last: paint, water colors, paper, etc. use your best judgement.
 Avoid children pouring paint without assistance from teacher—Children end up pouring too much.
 Avoid running in the hallway and classroom, many children have trip while running and gotten hurt.

Things that worked well:

 Clean up song for children


 Hangs parachute on the ceiling with powerful magnetics (children enjoyed this)
 Rotating teacher’s jobs each day: dishes, snack, motor activities, sensory tables, circle time, etc.
 Lockers for children
 Name tags

Homework:

 A few children will have home work (mostly math and reading).
 Some children will get distracted in the classroom with the noise and activities, another option where to do
homework is taking the children to the table in the hallway across from the children’s lockers.
 We found when children do homework out in the hallway; they focus more and get their work done faster.

Snack:

 Teachers are responsible to make sure snack prep is done before 2pm every Monday/Wednesday.
 Teachers must wash their hands and wear and food apron for sanitary reasons.
 Place any leftover food from the class room in baggies or containers, label it “After school” with the date
and place in the cupboard or fridge. (Food can be reserved if it come from the same group of children.
 Dishes must be washed after snack. Strive to have snack done by 3:30pm that the dishes will have time to
air dry after the wash. Dishes have to air dry for sanitation reasons.

Field trips on campus:

 Apple orchard
 Rock museum
 Planetarium
 Heart Gym
 I-center
 Art gallery
 Gardens
 Football field
 Library: printing press, etc.
 MC building

Things to do at the end of the semester:

 Write a thank you letter to parents (it is important to parents to know how their children are making
progress in the program).
 Acknowledge your practicum student/teachers. Hand out awards for each student. You make up the award
for each student. For example, “Claire gets the “Be Happy, energetic award.” You can talk with other lab
teachers like Bro. Alan how they do the awards to their students.
 File paper and documents; make sure all children are organizing to give back to sister Pond.
 Turn in key to the lock key office on campus. Turn aprons and etc.
 Meet with brother Rane to finalize practicum student’s grade and progress.
Extra project to do:

 Music list
 Shoe tie strategies for children (some still need to learn to tie their shoes).
 Make a book shelf to put in classroom to store After School books
 Make a list of field trip phone numbers to have on hand

Things to improve:

 Parent sign in and pick up ( NEED a new system)


 Classroom set up
 Children reading corner
 Teacher’s lesson plans ( be clear on what the expectation are)
 Give back more feedback (positive and corrective) earlier to students on their lesson plans that they can
have time to improve thought-out the semester. (Don’t be afraid to be bold in telling a student how to
improve, this will on help a student grows and improve).
