Glass Glass
No. 1 No. 2

Hi Kids! I'm Mr. Ben.

I am having a hard time figuring out why I cannot dissolve
all particles of my favorite powder juice in the second glass
of water? Can you help me find the answer to this question?

GET YOUR HANDS AND MIND ON THIS

LEARNING MATERIAL, as this will help
you investigate the properties of saturated
and unsaturated solution. (S7MT-Ic-2)

BUT in order do this, you need to know first

what constitutes a solution.

A solution has two (2) types of

components: the solute and the SOLUTE
solvent. The solute and solvent
dissolve in each other.
Solute is the component present in
small amount; the particles of solute
are dissolved in a solution.
On the other hand, solvent is the
component present in greater
amount.

In Mr. Ben’s case, the solute

is the powdered juice drink and
the solvent is the water.

you find the answer to Mr. Ben's
question.
Of course I can!
Do you think
Your adventure includes three (3) main you can find
I might need some
activities, and these are the following: the answer?
help!

1. “More space available” – Identify properties of an unsaturated solution

2. “Fully Loaded” – Identify properties if a saturated solution

3. “Mr. Ben is mixing!” – Differentiate between saturated and unsaturated solutions.

ACTIVITY CARD #1 Saturated & Unsaturated Solutions 4

! Objective: Identify properties of unsaturated solution.

Hello! My name is Droppy, and I am the most famous solvent who

loves to dissolve things. Today I am going to dissolve coffee granules.
Please count all coffee powders you can find inside the box below.

COFFEE GRANULES (Solute)

Q1. How many coffee granules have you counted? __________

Now, count the same number of small circles inside Droppy’s body below and
blacken them using a pen!

This is DROPPY.
Here, he can
dissolve up to a maximum
of 36 coffee granules as a
SOLVENT!

Q2. Which one gets dissolved? Droppy or the coffee granules? ___________
Q3. Which one does the dissolving? ____________
Q5. Are there more space available? Can Droppy accommodate more coffee
powder and dissolve them? (Check one below)
YES NO

REMEMBER!
If more solute can be added and dissolved in a solution, then the original solution is
unsaturated.

This also means that the less solute is present compared to how much the solvent is
capable of dissolving!

ACTIVITY CARD #2 Saturated & Unsaturated Solutions 5

! Objective: Identify properties of saturated solution.

It’s me again, the most famous solvent who loves

to dissolve things, Mr. Droppy!
I am quite sad that I have only dissolved so little in the previous activity.
Let’s do more dissolving inside a glass!

Instruction:

Below are juice granules numbered 1 to 20.

To dissolve them, you have to copy their
numbers to the circles inside Droppy’s
body who is sitting inside the glass.

Then, you can proceed in answering the

guide questions.

SOLVENT SOLUTE
(Water) (Juice Granules)

Q1. How many juice granules (solutes) are present? __________

Q2. How many juice granules can the solvent accommodate and dissolve? ________
Q3. How many juice granuless are no longer accommodated by the solvent? ________
Q4. Can Mr. Droppy (solvent) still accommodate and dissolve the extra juice powders?
(Check one below)
YES NO

DID YOU KNOW?

A saturated solution is a solution in which no more solute can be dissolved in
the solvent. When a solution has achieved its saturation, additional substance that
is added results in a PRECIPITATE- which are the substances that are left
undissolved.

ACTIVITY CARD #3 Saturated & Unsaturated Solutions 6

! Objective: Differentiate between saturated and unsaturated solutions

INSTRUCTION: Read each situation below and identify what type of solution
is prepared. In the space provided, write if it is a SATURATED or
UNSATURATED solution.

It was Saturday morning when Mr. Ben had four (4) visitors who
came to his house to greet him a happy birthday. Mr. Ben prepared
four different drinks.
For the first visitor, Mr. Ben prepared an 1. What type of solution was
prepared?
orange juice. He poured 1 tablespoon of
powder juice to 1 glass of water. All powder
got dissolved.

For his second visitor, Mr. Ben mixed 2 2. What type of solution was
prepared?
packs of coffee powder in 1 small cup of
water. There were many coffee powder left
undissolved.

The third visitor got a cup of milk. He 3. What type of solution was
prepared?
noticed that the milk has no taste. He asked
for more milk powder and the added powder
got dissolved.

For the fourth visitor, Mr. Ben prepared a 4. What type of solution was
prepared?
cup of tea. It was too sweet that sugar
particles are present at the bottom of the
cup.

based on the situations presented.

Choose the best answer among the choices below by darkening its corresponding
circle.

6. Robert was preparing his chocolate drink in a glass of hot water. He poured the whole
pack of chocolate powder into the glass and stirred it well. After stirring for some time, he
still found precipitates at the bottom of the glass. What type of solution did Robert
prepare?

Take a look at this school bus.

Let us assume that the school bus
is a solution made up of the bus
itself as the solvent, and the
students as the solutes.

This school bus on the left has a seating

A1 capacity of 25. Meaning, it can only
accommodate 25 students and deliver them to
school.

Using the example of the bus and the students

as the solvent and solute, how many students
will you fit in the bus to make a SATURATED
SOLUTION?
Instruction: Put a check mark in the oval beside each student so they can get inside the bus.

This school bus on the right has a

seating capacity of 40. Meaning, it A2
can accommodate up to 40 students
and deliver them to school.

Using the example of the bus and the

students as the solvent and solute, how
many students will you fit in the bus to
make an UNSATURATED SOLUTION?
Instruction: Put a check mark in the oval beside each student so they can get inside the bus.

THANK YOU! You have been very helpful.

Allow me to reciprocate you kindness by leaving
you a good reading below.

Saturated and Unsaturated solutions are all

around you!

You might know someone who loves to drink sodas, which

are carbonated beverages. Sodas are examples of a
saturated solution. The solvent, is the water that forms the
base of the soda, and it is bombarded with carbon until no
more can be introduced, and it gives off the excess carbon
as gas bubbles. This means that not all undissolved solutes
appear as solid particles, they could also be gas.

And remember the time when you mixed your powdered

chocolate drink in a hot water? You might have experienced
preparing too much water that your chocolate drink became
too bland. Well, you actually came up with an unsaturated
solution that time.

See? Everyday, you get to encounter saturated and

unsaturated solutions. You can learn more about saturation
in the following links and books below, go check
them out!
