Past President (2004-2007)

1
Summary of Revisions

1. The provisions are refined to

incorporate local practices and
corrections in the NSCP 2001.
2. List of available wood species has been
updated.
3. Machine-Graded Lumber is included.

2
Revision 1
Example:
Item 619.5 Miscellaneous Fasteners
Figures 619.5.2-A to 619.5.2-C are
included to show Withdrawal
Connections

Example:
Mention of “UBC Standard 23-1” is
removed.

3
Revision 1
Example:
Reasonable and more practical rounding-
off of numbers (relaxed conversion of
English unit equivalents, i.e. 278 mm2 to
270 mm2; 30 m instead of 30.5 m.)

Example:
Units are made consistent. For size
dimensions, use of mm. For distances,
lengths, use of m.

43
ADJUSTMENT FACTORS :
CD = LOAD DURATION FACTOR
CM = WET SERVICE
CF = SIZE FACTOR
Cf = FORM FACTOR
Cfu= FLAT USE
Cg = SUPPORT
Ci = INCISING
Ct = TEMPERATURE
Cr = REPETITIVE MEMBER
CP = COLUMN STABILITY
CL = BEAM SATABILITY
CS = SLENDERNESS
CV = COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION
CV = VOLUME FACTOR

44
615.1.1 REPETITIVE MEMBER SYSTEM , Cr ;
Reference Fb x Cr, where Cr = 1.15
Cr = 1.0, all other framing system

615.3.5 SIZE FACTOR ADJUSTMENT, CF ;

D > 300mm, with B = 125 or thicker, then Fb x CF

CF = ( 300/d)^1/9

615.3.6 SLENDERNESS FACTOR, Cs ;

D > B, then Fb x Cs where Cs = ( le d / b^2 )^1/2
when Cs < 10, use Fb.
when Cs > 10; Cs < Ck, then F’b = Fb (1-1/3(Cs/Ck)^4))
where Ck = 0.811(E/Fb)^1/2
when Cs > Ck, but < 50, then F’b = 0.438 E / ( Cs )^2
In no case shall Cs exceed 50.
45
615.3.7 FORM FACTOR ADJUSMENTS, Cf ;

Fb x Cf, where Cf = 1.18 for circular’

Cf = 1.414 for square

615.3.8 MODULUS OF ELASTICITY Adjusment, Cv ;

E x Cv ;

where Cv = 0.25 for visually-graded sawn lumber ;

Cv = 0.11 for machine stress-rated sawn lumber

46
FLEXURE EXAMPLE :

FLOOR JOIST 50 X 200 sp @ 300mm oc

SPAN = 4.0 M
APITONG ; from T 6.1, Fb = 10.3 mpa 50% stress grade
T 6.31 Fb = 10 mpa machine graded -lumber

wdl = 0.225 kpa

wll = 0.576 kpa
total w = 0.801 kpa ; Mt = 1.602 kn-m
actual fb = 4.806 mpa ,

SOLVE for Fb :

a) size factor adjusment, since depth D < 300, then Cf = 1.0, USE Fb.

47
b) Slenderness factor, Cs ;

since D > B, Cs = ( le d / b^2 )^1/2, where le = 1.92 lu

= 1.92 (4) = 7.68 m
then Cs = 0.78 < 10, then use Fb.

C) form factor, Cf = 1.414 for square, then F’b = 1.414 Fb

d) repetitive member system, Cr ;

since spacing < 600mm oc, then Cr = 1.15, then F’b = 1.15 Fb

e) using Fb = 10.3 and 10 mpa > fb actual = 4.806 mpa …OK
