PIPING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

Piping material specification covers technical requirements of material for pipes, flanges,
fittings, valves and other piping components for use in process and utility piping system.

Specification based on fluid properties, temperature, pressure and other factors.

PIPING CODES & STANDARDS

Piping codes defines the requirements of design, fabrication, use of materials, tests and
inspection of pipes and piping systems.
Piping standards define application design and construction rules and requirements for piping
components as flanges, elbows, tees, valves etc.

Organisation of piping codes:-

a) ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers, one of the leading organizations in

the world developing codes and standards.
b) ANSI - American National Standards Institute, provides a forum for development of
American national standards.
c) DIN - Deutsches Institut für Normung (Germany)
d) ISO - International Organization for Standardization.

ASME CODES:-

a) B31.1 – Power Piping

b) B31.2 – Fuel Gas Piping, WITHDRAWN superseded by ANSI Z223.1
c) B31.3 – Process Piping, (formerly Chemical Plant and Petroleum Refinery Piping)
d) B31.4 – Liquid Hydrocarbon Transportation Piping (oil cross country pipelines)
e) B31.5 – Refrigeration Piping

INTRODUCTION TO VALVES

It is a device which control the amount and direction of fluid flow in piping systems
Typically made of bronze, brass, iron, or steel alloy
Components:
 Valve body
 Packing
 Seat
 Wheel
 Gland packing

Types of valve:-

• Two basic groups:

 Stop valves - used to shut off or partially shut off the flow of fluid ( ex: globe,
gate, plug, needle, butterfly)
 Check Valves - used to permit flow in only one direction (ex: ball-check, swing-
check, lift-check)
• Special types:
 Relief valves
 Pressure-reducing valves
 Remote-operated valves
