Introduction

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are strategically managed today

because of its competitive local, national and international environment. One
of these is the knowledge-based in terms of innovation and research; and in
providing highly knowledgeable and skilled human capital.

For instance, the new generations of learners, budgetary constraints,

academic and technological innovations, and even economic factors have
given rise to the need for re-evaluating strategies employed by schools.

In addition, because of competitiveness, attracting and keeping

students also makes education administrators to re-consider their strategies to
realize their schools’ core activities.

It is in this consideration that the researcher conducts this study on the

status of the nursing education in the Philippines so that a Proposed
Framework for Strategic Planning for Nursing Schools may be offered.

This study is descriptive in nature where selected nursing schools in the

National Capital Region (NCR) and Region IV-A were made respondents of
the study. From these findings, 39 administrators, 120 faculty, and 725
students were made the individual groups of respondents.

A modified Institute Sustainable Assessment (I.S.A.) standardized

instrument by CHED has used to gather the data.

From series of surveys and interviews conducted, the researcher

arrived at the researcher offers the following recommendations: 1) the College
should not only review its recruitment, hiring and selection of its faculty of
nursing, but also consider their advanced knowledge, skills, preparation,
instructional competency, and attitudes as well as commitment to the delivery
of quality education and healthcare services; 2) a holistic approach to strategic
management and planning should be considered in the implementation of the
teaching-learning strategies that will ultimately produce nurses who are fit for
the profession. Likewise, providing student-centered approach to learning,
promoting self-reflection, lifelong learning as well as embracing competence
and confidence in the delivery of high quality evidence-based instruction and
care will help in the management of Schools of Nursing; 3) these schools and
education managers should be compelled to think outside the box, be critical
and creative in planning strategically with the following considerations: 3.1)
Plan and carry out all the core activities to achieve the schools’ ultimate goal;
3.2) use resources both financial, people, and physical, which can lead to a
different level of benefits; and 3.3) set priorities and make choices through a
balanced decision-making, trade-offs across the school system, and
consensus building choices; 4) use corporate level strategy – making
institutional image building, motivate and stimulate all levels of the institutional
ladder to undergo managerial and instructional training and development
(T&D), research, and communication skills as well as community extension
services in collaboration with other educational environments to achieve the
necessary synergy across the functional units and across disciplinary areas,
internally and externally; and 5) if adopted, the Proposed Framework for
Strategic Planning for Nursing Schools, will stimulate excellence in education
and research and improve the quality of the schools’ academic services and
facilities that will redound to a successful school.
