Knowledge, Attitude and Practices Regarding Food Hygiene and Sanitation of Food
Handlers in Kuala Pilah, Malaysia

Brief Background:
This study evaluates the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of food handlers working in
restaurants in Kuala Pilah, Malaysia. It was conducted in the year of 2012 wherein the food
industry in Kuala Pilah is increasing to develop diarrhea. This was found out by the researchers
that the cause of this illnesses was improper food handling and food contamination. Children
aged 5 years old and below die due to diarrhea. The researchers suggested ways on how to
take care of this issue such as a). Continuous education and training should strengthen food
handlers’ knowledge b). Education and food safety training should be provided frequently to the
food service staff in order to minimize foodborne hazards.

Brief Background:
The purpose of the present study was to examine the prevalence of fast food purchases for
family meals and the associations with socio-demographic variables, dietary intake, home food
environment, and weight status in adolescents and their parents. This study was conducted in
the year of 2007 wherein the researchers noticed the psychological consequences of the
childhood of the children affected by obesity which includes poor self-esteem, teasing, and
verbal abuse. And so, the researchers suggested that the families affected need to be educated
on the effects of fast food for family meals and how to choose healthier, convenient family
meals.

Brief Background:
The aims of this study were to investigate the food safety knowledge and practices of food
handlers and to assess the sanitary conditions of food service establishments in Bahir Dar
Town. This study was conducted in the year of 2011 wherein the researchers found out the
cause of the food borne illness outbreaks. And so, educational programs targeted at improving
the attitude of food handlers and licensing and regular inspections have been recommended.

Brief Background:
The aim of the study that were conducted by the University of Belgrade, Alexander
Technological Education Institution of Thessaloniki, and the University of Porto was to
investigate three dimensions of food hygiene in three European cities - Belgrade, Thessaloniki
and Porto. The researchers were alarmed with the inadequate handling of food in these three
European cities. And thus, they made a way to resolve the issue. The first step of the survey
was to evaluate the level of hygiene in different food establishments supplying food direct to
consumers. A stunning total of 91 food businesses were included in the survey with 30 food
businesses from Belgrade and Porto, and 31 from Thessaloniki. The second dimension of the
study was to examine the opinion of managers of these food establishments regarding food
hygiene rating. Finally, in order to justify the importance of food hygiene, the research covered
consumers’ perception regarding food safety and hygiene practices in the three European cities.
A total of 600 respondents were interviewed in the survey, 200 respondents per city. Thus, more
than 70% of food establishments in Thessaloniki and Porto were those with HACCP system
implemented, while in Belgrade an opposite situation was found, as only 23.3% of investigated
food establishments had implemented a HACCP based food safety system.

Brief Background:
The aim of the study was to study socio-demographic profile, health status and level of hygiene
in food handlers. This was conducted by the researchers Dr. Prabhu P. M., and Dr. Shah R. S.
Furthermore, this is because the food handlers in Maharashtra, India lacks basic food handling
technique and results in a food borne illness. They carried out cross sectional study among 70
food handlers working in public food establishments in Miraj. The food establishments were
plucked by a randomized sampling technique. From each hotel 5 participants were selected
randomly. The handlers were assessed for their socio-demographic profile using a
questionnaire interview method. General examination was done on the participant to assess the
health status.
