ASSIGNMENT I

1. Average marks in science of 10 students of a class were 68. A new student took admission with 72
marks whereas 2 existing students left the college. If the marks of these students were 40 and 39,
find the average marks of the remaining students. (Ans. 74.78)

2. The sum of deviations of a certain number of observations measured from 4 is 72 and the sum of
deviations of the same value from 7 is -3. Find the number of observations and their mean. (Ans.
n=25, mean = 6.88)

3. Following are the marks (out of 100) obtained by students in a test.

4. The mean of the following frequency distribution is 50. But the frequencies f 1 and f2 in the classes
20-40 and 60-80 are missing. Find the missing frequencies.

Using arithmetic mean and standard deviation, answer the following questions –

i. Which factory pays higher average wages? By how much?

ii. In which factory are the wages more variable?

17. The following figures relate to the weights in lbs of five persons – 120, 140, 150, 160 and 180.
Calculate the variance and standard deviation of the weights.

Now, subtract 40 lbs from each of the weights above and then calculate and the variance and
standard deviation of the weights. Do you find any change in answers as compared to the
previous?

18. The mean of 5 observations is 3 and variance is 2. If the three of the 5 observations are 1, 3, 5 find
the other two.
