FLAG

The current flag of Colombia was officially adopted on

December 17, 1819.

The flag features three horizontal bands of yellow (double-

width), blue and red. Colors of the flag are commonly
interpreted in two ways:

One version indicates that the yellow symbolizes sovereignty

and justice, blue as loyalty and vigilance, and red
represents the valor shown and the victory achieved during
the battles for independence from Spain.

A very popular children's song claims that yellow represents

the gold Colombia once owned until the arrival of the
Spanish, blue indicates the country's contact with two oceans
and red represents the blood that Colombians spent in their
struggle for independence from Spain.

(39 percent of total imports); manufactured products (22

as a result of its geographical location near
the Equator presenting variations within five natural
regions (Andaean, Caribbean, Pacific, Orinoco,Amazon and
Insular) and depending on the altitude, temperature,
humidity, winds and rainfall. Each region maintains an
average temperature throughout the year only presenting
variables determined by precipitation during a rainy season
caused by the Intertropical Convergence Zone

LOCAL ANIMAL
Colombia is one of the best places to watch birds and immerse
yourself in nature on the planet. No other country is home to
more bird species, it has the largest number of terrestrial
mammals (those that live on land), the largest number of
amphibians in the world (including frogs, toads, salamanders
and caecilians) and is home.
Colombia boasts an extraordinary total of more than 1900
different kinds of bird, close to one in five of all those in
the world. Not surprisingly the Andean Condor is Colombia’s
national symbol. It’s also home to some of the most sought-
after wild creatures in South America including six native
wild cat species, from Jaguars to Ocelots, anacondas to
Tapirs and Spectacled Bears to sloths.

POPULATION 2019

The 2019 population of Colombia is estimated at 49.85 million,

which ranks 29th in the world. Colombia is officially known as
the Republic of Colombia. It consists of thirty-two departments
and is located on the northwestern side of South America.

The population is largely concentrated along

the Caribbean coast and the Andean highlands. Despite being
one of the top 30 most populous countries, Colombia is sparsely
populated with just 41 people per square kilometer (106/square
mile), which ranks 173rd in the world. Colombia is the third-
most populous country in all of Latin America and it's home to
the third-largest number of Spanish-speaking people in the
world after Mexico and the United States.
