Purpose/Role of Unit
● This unit builds on the concept of Place from the 5 Themes of Geography. Part of Place is discussing
the human characteristics that define a location or place. With this we are basically talking about
culture. So in this unit we will be exploring what creates culture and talking about examples.
● Focus #1 is on identifying the different elements that create culture.
● Focus #2 is on understanding how the elements work together to create culture and identifying
examples from your life and the United States.

Religion and Conflict

● This activity will be done as a whole group on a specific day in class. Make sure to keep track on the
calendar.
● You will be participating in a small group for a portion of the class and then we will have whole group
discussion.
● The purpose of this activity is to critically think about how religion is used in our society and how
religion can be used in conflict between different groups of people.
● Further direction will be given in class on the day of the activity.

● You will have to identify the physical and human characteristics of your selected country.
● This will be done on paper
● This portion will be assessing if you can identify and apply the material to a country.

● Major cities
● Major landforms/physical features like mountains, rivers, etc.
● Any other item you believe is important to feature

You will describe how each of those elements creates the culture of that location and how those elements
influence each other and how those elements create the identity or “Place” for that location.
