ABSTRACT

The scope of the study is a program of innovation that links a different way of looking at things
with innovative ideas that apply the opportunities offered by new technologies in smart ways.
An intelligent Highway is an innovative concept for smart roads of future smart cities. Now-a-
days safety on road has become an important factor in our life, because there is an increasing
amount of accidents on the road and there are some places where accidents occur frequently such
as crossings, turns. Also there is a big problem of traffic jams on the road. Due to heavy rain fall,
there is a possibility of water overflow on the bridges and accident may occur. In hilly areas
there is a possibility of landslides. So, there came a need to design a system which can detect
these unexpected events, Which is an innovative concept to maintain safety on roads. The system
will make use of digital sensor to acquire data of landslide, accidents traffic jams and weather
condition and that will be displayed on active LED display on road, using modern technology.

This paper proposes a system for smart highways of future cities. Smart High
way is an interactive and sustainable road that is using light, energy, sensors and information to
interact with the traffic situation. Sustainable or eco-cities are the perfect environment for
applying modern technologies, which can guarantee zero-carbon emissions.

INTRODUCTION

The study examines smart road in future is that, when we look at high ways and roads why it is
so much time, money and energy spent on cars and traffic management system. But the actual
roads themselves are still stuck in the middle ages. We are in the 20th century where all the things
have capabilities to become smart for example phones become smart phones vehicle become
smart vehicle. we work out on vehicle to become smart vehicle but it is not necessary that every
vehicle is smart. If we make road smart every vehicle became smart by itself. The energy will
also be consumed and economically we will save a lot of money.

Technologies like water absorbing and silent asphalt or intelligent traffic light system improve
roads ability to fulfill its current function, namely: enabling transportation in the most secured
and comfortable way. But next to these improvements another branch of innovative technologies
has been created-technologies that not only enhance the current functionality of a road but add a
new aspect or even a whole new function to it.

The smart road concepts not only works on particular conditions it purpose is to utilize every
single resource and give maximum output. This concept also reduces these outcomes by using
technologies.

BODY

SMART ROAD: smart high way and smart roads are the terms for a number of different
proposals to incorporate technologies into roads for generating solar energy, for improving the
operation of autonomous cars, for lighting, and for monitoring the condition of the road.

The smart road technologies make use of principles and materials that are not a necessity to
construct a road.(like asphalt) but are used in many settings (like solar panels)

NEED FOR SMART ROADS:

1. Smart roads are those roads that think, feel and predict the needs of the people and the
vehicles that travel on them.

They share data on traffic, parking, and recharging.

2. Smart roads have an environmental conscience, charge our vehicles and help improve our
safety.

3. Smart roads not only improve journeys it will also create a more sustainable road
network.

Types of smart roads:

1. Alen tech smart road

2. charging roads

3. Solar road etc.,

(5)
ALEN TECH SMART ROAD:

Over the years the cities and suburbs are constantly becoming populated and expanding. Early
there used to be cover with vegetation around now it have been replaced by infrastructure
parking slots and sidewalks. The excessive use of impervious coverings left cities with the
challenge causing flooding, overflow and degradation of water quality becoming a problem.

The absence of these natural surfaces has disrupted the cycle of water.

To help solve this problem introducing the Alen tech smart road system. The smart road system
consists of :

1. Alen tech smart tiles which consists of

i) Solar panels

ii) Led lights

iii) Pressure sensor

iv) Control unit and solar charge regulator

v) Heating rods

vi) Polystyrene concrete shell.

Solar panel, led lights, pressure sensor, heating rods, control units are embedded in a polystyrene
concrete shell which forms the smart road system.alen tech smart road system recreates natural
hydro-logical conditions. Its primary function allows water to percolate through its joints, while
being filtered through layers of aggregate, prior to returning to the soils. With five layers of
water filtration to help separate unwanted contaminants. This helps reduce rain water runoff thus
reducing the strain, strom water management system which droves rain water quality. In addition
to this it helps ground water recharge.

It is recommended in areas where vegetation is not suitable.alen tech smart road system can
reduce the cost of underwater infrastructure.

This helps government in reducing life cycle costs associated with waste water management in
the municipalities.

The alen Tec smart roads can handle the weight and vibrations common to extreme industrial
transport. They are also designed to resist ground water displacement and thawing cycle which

causes bumps and cracks in the roads. In addition the smart roads are also designed to harness
solar energy. From the sun.

HEATING RODS: The embedded heating rods melts snow overtime reducing the need for
deicing agents.

PRESSURE SENSORS: Imbedded pressure sensors trigger LED lights which are activated when
an object s are standing still for more than a minute warning on coming traffic. In addition to this
imbedded sensors in the smart rods will also help blind people navigate locations and obstacles
when connected to their smart phones.

Collectively the system can help monitor the traffic flow and report flooding in areas. The
control room monitors traffic pollution levels, energy conversion unit functioning and security.

ILLUMINATING ROADS

1. Glow In The Dark

Rather than spend a large budget on road lighting or other lighting options that span across thousands of
miles of roads, the idea to use glow in the dark road markings is a better, more adoptable alternative.
Such markings are already made available on the road in the N329 highway in Oss, Netherland.

The markings are made using paint that contains photo-luminising powder that “charges up”
during the day. These green glow markings stretch for 500 m long and will glow for up to 8
hours every night, transforming your driving experience..

(7)
2. Interactive Light

Aside from glow in the dark paint, there is also the idea to use motion-sensor lights. Interactive
Light works in this sense: when a car approaches a particular stretch of a road, the motion
sensors will light up only that section of the road. The lights will grow brighter as the car
comes closer and will slowly dim away as it passes.

Interactive Light is perfect for highways that are less-travelled or not always packed with cars.
You can’ afford to play dice with the safety of road users, for the sake of saving a penny or two,
and Interactive Lights help kill two birds with one stone, providing night visibility as and
when required . Since it requires wind to power .

3.Wind-Powered Lights

Unlike interactive lights, wind-powered lights will power up itself using pinwheels to generate
electricity. It works by harnessing wind drafts from passing cars into electric. The electricity will
use to light up the lights on the pinwheels, basically lighting up the road path.

these wind-powered lights will only light up as cars pass by the area. For this to work, these
pinwheel generators will be set up along the car’s path at the roadside, to continuously light up
paths as cars drive through.

4. Electric Priority Lane

Another interesting idea by the same studio is the Electric Priority Lane where electric vehicles
(EV) user can charge up their vehicle on the go. And they can do this just by driving on the
right lane. The Induction Priority Lane will have embedded magnetic fields that can charge the
vehicle while it is on the go. This is especially useful in countries like Netherland, where there
are a lot of EVs on the road.

This will ensure that electric cars do not require to look for charging stations, and can even
keep their cars charged on long journeys.

5. Solar Roadways

Remember in the introduction where we mentioned roads that can store solar energy? Well, it
wasn’t just a theory. Solar Roadways is a project that wants to install solar panels on glass
roads, complete with LEDs and microprocessors. Glass is renewable, environmentally
friendly, and its strength can be improved to be even stronger than steel.

Despite being glass, the surface can be engineered for cars to be able to stop safely even when
travelling at speeds of up to 80 mph – like on regular roads. The solar panel roads can even melt
snow during winter and of course the solar energy harnessed can be used to power electrical
needs.

Implementation of smart roads:

1. The smart road technology is already in implementation in the countries like Korea and
Netherlands. In 2013 the Korea advanced institute of science and technology(KAIST)
installed the first electronically charged bus route in the city. Its significant feature was
the route was able to charge the electric bus that drove on it.

The main purpose of the project was to allow the busses in the city to travel larger
distance without stopping anywhere to recharge which in turn allows frequent bus service
and extra comfort for the passengers using them.

2. Netherland smart city roads featured the most excellent techniques which are beneficial
for the travelers by adding more convenience while travelling. The roads are equipped
with the sensors and designed with the interactive light technology like glow in the dark
linings, dynamic paints. Due to the emergency of such exclusive technologies the safety
of the travelers is automatically take care of. Not only will this improve the journey but it
will also build an advantageous road network.
CONCLUSION

Roads now no longer remain as a medium to travel from one place to another. We can now use it
to charge electric cars and harness solar energy due to its large exposed surface area. There is
also technology to keep portions of the roads well-lit with more energy-efficient and
environment friendly technology and methods. Hopefully there will be more upcoming
technology to make our roads smarter and safer to travel on.
