ABSTRACT

Tannins are compounds of secondary metabolites that can be found in many plants including Mango
plant (Mangifera Indica L.). Tannins have a cluster of polyphenols that can serve as polifunctional
ligands for chelating Cu(II). Cu(II)-ion imprinted polymer-tannin (Cu-IP-tannin) of extract tannins
was successfully synthesized using tannin extract from Mango leaf (Mangifera Indica L.)
(polyfunctional ligand), phenol and formaldehyde (as a cross-linker) and sulfuric acid as a
catalyst(catalyst) and initiator. As control, Non Imprinted Polymer (NIP) was similarly prepared
without the presence of Cu(II) ions. The results of the synthesisAs synthesized of Cu-ion imprinted
polymerpolymers iswere characterized with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), EDX (Energy
Dispersive x-ray Spectroscopy) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR). Cu 2+ ions-ion imprinted
polymerions wereas completely removed by leaching the dried and powdered imprinted polymer with
0,5 M HNO3. Maximum adsorption of Cu(II)-IP-tannin-Ion imprinted polymer- was obtained at pH 7
and contact time at 120 minutes contact time. Adsorption of Cu(II)-ion imprinted polymerIP-tannin
followed the Freundlich isotherm model with a maximum capacity of adsorption is 99.08 mg/g. The
relative values of the selectivity factor (α r) of Cu(II)/Ni(II), Cu(II)/Pb(II) and Cu(II)/Fe(II) on a single
metal ion selectivity test were 23.89, 55.71 and 26.25 respectively. which are greater than 1 means
that Cu-ion imprinted polymer is selective.
