at SMAN 8 Malang

ABSTRACT

Pedagogical competence is a competence of teacher to accomplish the process


of teaching and learning thoroughly started from planning, implementing and
evaluating the students learning outcomes. The study is designed to investigate the
prevailing situation of an English teacher’s pedagogical competence at SMAN 8
Malang based on the seven aspects, (1) the teacher’s understanding of the students’
characteristics, (2) the teacher’s mastery of learning theory and principle of learning
that educates, (3) the teacher’s ability to develop the curriculum, (4) the teacher’s
activity of meaningful learning, (5) the teacher’s understanding of students’ potential,
(6) the teacher’s activity of communicative learning, and (7) the teacher’s evaluation
of students’ learning outcomes. The main objectives of this study were to analyzed
how the pedagogical competence of an English teacher in teaching English at SMAN
8 Malang and its effect on the classroom activities.
This research used qualitative approach and a case study as the design. The
participant of this research was an English teacher of SMAN 8 Malang especially in
Eleventh Grade English teacher that was chosen by purposive sampling. The data was
obtained through observation, interview and documents. The obtained data was
presented in the form of description context. This research was conducted from April-
May 2016. The data was analyzed using data display, triangulation and conclusion.
The research findings of the pedagogical competence of an English teacher at
SMAN 8 Malang showed that he already had good pedagogical competence since he
has already acquired all of the aspects in the issues mentioned above. According to
the observation, interview, and documents data, the teacher had already understood
the students’ characteristic, mastered the learning theory and principles of learning
that educates, had the ability to develop the curriculum, implemented a meaningful
learning, understood the students’ potential, implemented a communicative learning,
and evaluated the students’ learning outcomes. Moreover, the teacher was able to
organize the activity that encourage the students more actively involved and
enthusiastically joining the teaching and learning process. Besides, his activities in
the classroom also established the students’ positive character.
In a few words, the researcher concludes that the English teacher as the object
of the research already has good pedagogical competence in teaching. Therefore, the
activities in the classroom are able to grab the students’ interest and make them enjoy
learning English in the classroom. In order to make the students relish the learning,
English teachers need to increase the pedagogical competence in teaching since it
does not only provide the positive effect on students but also on teacher. Furthermore,
to gain more complete knowledge in the area of teaching and learning process, future
researchers should work with the four competences of teachers on students’ interest
in learning English.
