SPECIMEN ANNOTATIONS:

1. BRASS

The specimen is a pure copper annealed. The microstructure shows of alpha in Beta
solid solution. The black spot is due to shrinkage cavity formed during casting.

2. ALUMINIUM ALLOY

The specimen is an aluminum based alloy. The microstructure consists of aluminum

Nodules are spread over the metal. It is subjected to cold work and recrystallization.

3. GRAY CAST IRON

The specimen is a gray cast iron. The microstructure shows granites in the form of
flakes. The matrix is pearlite and ferrite. This type of graphite is called as graphite’s in
gray cast iron.

4. HIGH SPEED STEEL

The microstructure is a tempered martensite in which white areas are retained austenite.
The dark particles are alloy carbides not dissolved during austenitisation

5. S.G.C. IRON

The Spherodised graphitic iron is one of cast iron. It can also be called as Nodular Cast
Iron. They are called so because of the shape of graphite’s (free carbon). This type of
cast irons is made by selective composition of the cast Iron with the addition of
Nodulising agent before pouring.
The microstructure shows graphite nodules in a matrix of free ferrite and pearlite. The
graphite’s are globular shape. This type of cast iron has better mechanical properties.

6. WHITE CAST IRON

It is a type of Cast Iron, which the matrix will be ferrite. This type of Cast Iron can be
Hardened and tempered. The snake like grains are graphite flakes some carbide also
could be seen.
7.LOW CARBON RECRYSTALLIZED

Any steel that is subjected to cold forming need to be recrystallized to improve its
properties. The perlitic phases are recrystallized near austenising temperature to
improve its properties. The ferrite grains are also recrystallized.

8. COPPER ALLOY

The specimen is a 60% copper and 40% Zinc alloy. It is also called (MUNTZ METAL
60%). The microstructure shows large elliptical dentric grains of an alpha solid solution
of copper zinc in a solid solution matrix of beta.

9. BEARING METAL

The specimen is a copper and tin alloy where bright epsilon particles are seen in dark
alpha matrix phase.

10. MALLEABLE IRON

Malleable iron is the result of annealing white iron (White heat cast iron) of a appropriate
chemical composition, to convert the carbon that is combined in the cementite (Fe3C) to
elemental carbon (Graphite) in the form of temper carbon nodules. The microstructure
show mallable iron exhibiting uniform non-aligned distribution of temperature carbon
graphite nodules.

11. LOW CARBON COLD WORK

The microstructure reveals pearlite grains in a matrix of ferrite. The grains are strained
due to cold working. There is no uniformity of the grains. They are elongated along the
direction of the strain

12. ANNEALED LOW CARBON STEEL

The Specimen is low carbon steel containing Carbon 0.15%. The steel is austenitised at
900 C for 1 hour and cooled in the Furnace for 48 hours. The micro structure shows fine
pearlite in a matrix of Ferrite. The dark grains are Pearlite and the bright grains are
ferrite. The percentage of pearlite is less as the percentage of carbon is also less.
