INTRODUCTION

In the communicative evolution of the world, different skills and ways of transmitting
ideas have been developed in different social, historical, cultural, political and other
contexts. Within this, is the language, the ability of the human being to express thoughts,
ideas and feelings through the word and through some signs that can be written or oral.

Well known, throughout history different languages were created in different parts of
the world, which, for its development, requires the communicative ability to translate and
interpret important things within the development of humanity, there are different types of
translation. Direct translation is done from a foreign language into the translator's
language, the reverse translation, on the other hand, takes shape from the language of
the translator to a foreign language. (Perez, Merino, 2010).

Taking into account the important translation process within the development of
society, and as most messages are transmitted audiovisually, we have what, the process
of subtitling as a series of techniques by which the meaning of what is expressed in a
video through texts located at the bottom. (Diaz, Jorge. 2003). Undoubtedly, with the
globalization and technological development, the quality and availability of audiovisual
content have been increased, not only in internet, but in different platforms, meaning that
there is a great demand for subtitling.

Therefore, our project seeks to be part of the growth, on the one hand in the audiovisual
industry, and, on the other, the translation industry in Colombia to create job opportunities,
likewise, to enrich ourselves communicatively through the processes that will be shown
throughout this work.

1. BUSINESS IDEA

To create a subtitling company for national animated videos from Spanish to English
located in Bogota.

2. RATIONALE

The main reasons that led us to create a company focused on subtitling of independent
animated audiovisual projects such as videos and short films, are based on the constant
national development that this industry has had, even though creative designers have the
opportunity to promote the Colombian culture in an international level. We pretend to
supply subtitling process from Spanish to English, when disclosing those projects/ideas
on national and more important international communication channels.

One of the aspects that is affecting this industry is the lack of interest in Colombia to
develop professional careers focused on the subtitling or dubbing. According to some
investigations, even though in Colombia the Spanish level is considered one of the best
between Spanish speakers, it hasn't been an option to make use of it in order to get
involved within the subtitling/dubbing industry. Different from other Spanish speaker
countries that have been working and developing this industry for many years and due to
their constant researches and practice they have been taken into account on a worldwide
level.

So taking into consideration what we have mentioned previously, we would like to use
this seminar project as one of the steps to give the opportunity to Colombian creative
producers to incursionate in the international market, and also to make use of our native
language to start growing into the subtitling industry on internal and external level.

3. OBJECTIVE

To create a subtitling company for national animated videos, with the purpose of scatter
Colombian culture through international channels and boost up the national audiovisual
industry.

4. CORPORATE PRESENTATION OF THE COMPANY

SUBANI GROUP is a company established in 2019 by a group of students of Modern

Languages who found the huge opportunity in the subtitling industry. The main reason of
the focus is to scatter Colombian culture through animated videos made by Colombian
producers, using the subtitling services in a local and international level.

4.2 CORPORATE IMAGE

Figure 2. Logo. Own authorship-Adobe Fireworks

 BRAND: The name “SUBANI” comes up of the concepts subtitling and animation,
which suit with the main activity and purpose of the company.

 LOGO: The idea of the logo came from the outcome of audiovisual productions,
commonly known with the filming tape image. Also, we took as reference the “Writing
Cursor” which represents the process of translating and subtitling. Finally three different
signs that are used in different video or music devices (Play, Stop and Pass) referring to
the edition process.

 SLOGAN: “Make it viral, make it readable.”

“Make it viral”, it is basically the purpose of every video producer; the dream of a person
who develops audio visual material and publish it through communication channels is that
every single person gets in touch with it.

Based on the idea of making the material viral, how do they make their material
understandable for everyone? Since the production is originally in Spanish, the easiest
and most effective way is to add subtitles in the video, “making it readable” and
understandable.

5. LEGAL FRAMEWORK

In the formation of a subtitling company in Bogota, it is necessary to comply with a

series of basic requirements to achieve good working in accordance with:

● ISO 17100:2015. Which provides requirements for core processes, resources and
other aspects necessary for delivering a quality translation service.

● ISO 9001. Which establishes quality standards for products and services.

● ISO 27001. Which establishes a standard to manage security information of

enterprises.

6. TECHNICAL STUDY

Our company will be located in the neighborhood known as “El Retiro” at “Chapinero”
locality, due to the huge quantity of animation enterprises that have their core business
on that area of the city, and more important because they are our target market and our
potential clients. The decision was made based on the investigation process that we
followed taking into account the amount of studios located on that area which produce
audiovisual material or are in charge of teaching the use of those platforms, such us:
Catapulta Producciones, Intelygente Branding, Marketing CDC, Barak Films, MOBS
audiovisual, Cinema Films & Magnificos Cinema, etc.

7. MARKET RESEARCH

By doing our own research based on our corporate objective we found out that there
are few companies that dedicate their services to translation and subtitling animation
videos. Their core business are documentaries, films and music videos. We will focus our
main workforce on animated videos and most likely the independent ones.

● Direct Competence: Copywrite Colombia / Calle 94A No. 11A - 66, Piso 1, Bogotá
and calle 125 No. 19 - 89 Of. 502, Bogotá.

● Indirect Competence: Official Translators from UNAL.

For pricing our product we think the best way to do it is collecting per words in the script
of the video, on that way each word cost 5.000COP. Companies as Copywrite charges a
total of 10.000COP per page without any adaptation to video, only the translation of the
script. We would like to make the difference by having good prices and offer the
adaptation.

The purpose of translating and subtitling this video was to apply our knowledge and
start boosting the national animated industry through channels such as YouTube. We
decided to subtitle and translate this one in specific because on our idea of scatter
Colombian culture we think that there’s nothing more popular than our public methods of
transportation, it’s known by everybody and shows a little bit of our multicultural society.

One of the hardest things at the moment of the translation and subtitling was to adapt
Colombian words and accents, such the words used by the peddler and the accent from
Major Enrique Peñalosa (SEE ANEXXUS, PAGE 17). Even though it is Spanish it was
very hard to find the correct transcription to adapt the text and video for non-Colombian
people. Also it was quite difficult to find a way to adapt the text when the people with
characteristic accents was spoken. We had to research about how people from other
countries could might sound taking into account their social status and environment in
order to try to be the most accurate at the moment of translate.

accent from major Enrique Peñalosa. Even though it is Spanish it was very hard to find

9. CONCLUSIONS
In a huge conclusion, by doing this project we found out that there is a great business
opportunity in this market, since there are a few companies that focus their core
business to subtitling of animated videos. But it's not that easy, also there are a few
animation channels on our country, maybe because the lack of opportunities have taken
them to redirect their ideas and focused on other kind of videos.

However, with support and investment this industry can start competing with other
countries and growing making a name of it, not only in national level but also on an
international one. On the other hand, adapt Colombian slang it is not easy at all, there
are a lot of expressions and words that only people from our country will understand,
and it was really a challenge to find the way to make it understandable for non-
Colombian people.
